D10 Dashamsha: the chart of your career in Vedic astrology

The Dashamsha (D10) divides each sign into ten parts of 3° to draw a whole chart of your working life: your profession, your career, your achievements and the place you take in the world. It is always read with the 10th house of the D1, whose promise it spells out in detail.

What is the D10 chart in Vedic astrology?

In Sanskrit, dashamsha means “the tenth part”. It is one of Parashara’s sixteen divisional charts, the one he devotes to great achievements: what you do, what you build, and the authority and recognition that come from it.

The D1 already shows the career through its 10th house, the karma bhava (the house of action). The D10 enlarges that house into a complete chart: it shows the field in which you succeed, how you rise, with whom, and what holds you back. It is the chart to open as soon as a question touches on work.

How is the Dashamsha calculated?

Each 30° sign is cut into ten parts of 3°, and each part is given a sign. The starting point depends on the natal sign, then the count moves forward through the zodiac:

  • Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius): the first part is the sign itself.
  • Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces): the first part is the 9th sign counted from it, Capricorn for Taurus, Pisces for Cancer.

Example: a Sun at 20° Leo, an odd sign, falls in the seventh part, from 18° to 21°. Count Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius: it is in Aquarius in the D10, at 20°, because the degree is multiplied by ten (200°), minus six full turns of 30°. Saturn at 25° Taurus, an even sign, starts from Capricorn and reaches Virgo at the ninth part.

What to look at in a D10 chart for career

Like every divisional chart, the D10 has its own Ascendant and its own houses, counted as whole signs. Here are the markers to read, in this order:

  1. The D10 Ascendant and its lord: the way you enter the world of work, the professional image you project, the energy you put into it.
  2. The 10th house of the D10 and its lord: the career itself, status, reputation. A strong planet in it gives a visible profession; its lord, well placed, shows where the career finds its support.
  3. The lord of the D1’s 10th house, placed in the D10: the bridge between the two charts. It shows how the professional promise of the birth chart comes true, with ease if it is strong in the D10, through effort if it is weakened there.
  4. The Sun and Saturn: the two great witnesses of the profession, authority and work.
  5. The Amatyakaraka: the planet of the profession according to Jaimini.
  6. Strong planets: in their own sign, in exaltation or in an angular house of the D10 (1, 4, 7, 10), they map out your strengths; a weakened planet shows the ground where you can grow.

The Sun, Saturn and the other planets in the D10

The Sun is the planet of authority, visibility and public role: strong in the D10, it leads toward leadership positions and professions where you stand for something. Saturn is the planet of work, effort and time: well placed, it gives a career that climbs step by step and lasts; weakened, it slows things down so that they hold, and its lesson is perseverance.

The other planets color the field of the profession. Mercury speaks of trade, writing, analysis; Jupiter of teaching, advice, law; Mars of technique, action, competition; Venus of art, beauty, relationships; the Moon of the public, care, hospitality. Rahu pushes toward the new, the foreign, technology: it sends ideas in bursts, and order is your antidote. Ketu sharpens a pointed expertise.

What is the Amatyakaraka?

In Jaimini’s system, the seven planets, from the Sun to Saturn, are ranked by their degree within their sign. The highest is the Atmakaraka (the soul); the second is the Amatyakaraka, literally “the minister”: the planet of the profession, of the advisor, of what serves the soul in the world. The page on the Jaimini karakas gives the full list.

In the D10, the Amatyakaraka shows the field in which your work finds its way. A well-placed Venus as Amatyakaraka points toward creation and professions built on relationships; Mercury toward writing, numbers or exchange; Saturn toward structures and in-depth work. Its house in the D10 says where this plays out.

D10 and D1: how to read them together

The D10 never replaces the D1: it refines one of its houses. A strong 10th house in the D1 promises a career; the D10 shows the shape it takes and the ease with which it comes true. When the two charts say the same thing, the reading is solid; when they differ, it is often a talent that needs time to assert itself.

Timing is read with the Vimshottari dashas: the periods of planets strong in the D10, or linked to its 10th house, are those when the career moves forward. The D9 gives the inner strength of each planet, and the 10th of your Western houses, with the Midheaven, tells the same story in other words. The full method is in crossing the charts.

An example of a D10 reading

Take a fictional chart: D10 Ascendant in Capricorn, with Saturn, its lord, exalted in Libra in the 10th house; Venus, lord of that 10th, in Aquarius in the 2nd; Mercury, the Amatyakaraka, in Gemini, its own sign, in the 6th; Jupiter, lord of the D1’s 10th house, in Cancer, its exaltation, in the 7th.

  • Saturn, lord of the Ascendant, exalted in the 10th: a career built over time, authority earned step by step, recognition that comes later but holds.
  • Venus, lord of the 10th, in the 2nd: a profession that runs through speech, value, resources; Aquarius adds the collective and innovation.
  • Mercury as Amatyakaraka in the 6th: advice, analysis, problem solving, service rendered day after day.
  • Jupiter, lord of the D1’s 10th, in the 7th: the promise of the birth chart comes true with others, in partnership, in contact with a public or with clients.

The verdict: a profession of advice or expertise that asserts itself over the years, more rewarding in partnership than alone. The lever: let Saturn take its time, and care for your speech, the tool of this profession.

How accurate does the birth time need to be for the D10?

The D10 Ascendant changes sign on average every 12 minutes, ten times faster than the D1 Ascendant. To read its houses, and so its 10th house, you need a birth time reliable to within a few minutes. Without a time, the site switches the Vedic view off; in France, the time appears on the full copy of the birth record, and elsewhere the long-form certificate often shows it.

The signs of the planets in the D10 hold far better: the Moon changes part about every five hours, the Sun every three days. With an approximate time, read the planets and their dignities, and keep the D10 Ascendant and houses for the day your time is certain.

Frequently asked questions

What is the D10 chart in Vedic astrology?

The D10, or Dashamsha, is the divisional chart that cuts each sign into ten parts of 3°. It details the 10th house of the D1: the profession, the career, achievements and the place you take in the world.

How do I read the D10 chart for my career?

Look at the D10 Ascendant and its lord, the 10th house of the D10 and its lord, then the lord of the D1’s 10th house placed in the D10. Add the Sun, Saturn, the Amatyakaraka and the strong planets, and cross everything with the D1 and the dashas.

How is the Dashamsha calculated?

Each sign is divided into ten parts of 3°. For an odd sign, the first part is the sign itself; for an even sign, it is the 9th sign counted from it. The degree in the D10 is the degree within the sign multiplied by ten, minus the full turns of 30°.

What is the Amatyakaraka?

According to Jaimini, it is the planet with the second-highest degree within its sign, among the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. Its name means “the minister”: it speaks of the profession and of what serves the soul in the world. Its place in the D10 shows the field of your work.

What birth time accuracy does the D10 need?

The D10 Ascendant changes sign on average every 12 minutes: its houses need a time reliable to within a few minutes. The signs of the planets in the D10, sometimes apart from the Moon, stay reliable even with an approximate time.

Does the D10 tell me which job to choose?

It shows a field, talents and a way of succeeding, not a job title. A strong Mercury speaks of writing or exchange, a strong Saturn of structure and endurance: it is up to you to recognize the professions that suit you, reading it alongside the D1.
