The Part of Fortune: where life makes things easier for you

The Part of Fortune is not a planet but a calculated point, the most famous of the “Arabic parts”. It combines your three pillars, Ascendant, Moon and Sun, and points to the sign and house where things flow, where your efforts pay more than elsewhere. Here is its formula, a worked example, and its reading in every sign and every house.

What is the Part of Fortune?

The Arabic parts, also called “lots”, are sensitive points obtained by adding and subtracting the longitudes of three factors of the chart. They come from Hellenistic astrology and were passed on and developed by Arabic-speaking astrologers in the Middle Ages, hence their name. The Part of Fortune (Pars Fortunae) is the oldest and the most used: it unites the three pillars of the person, the Ascendant, the Moon and the Sun, in a single point that only exists once the birth time is known.

Its meaning is fortune in the old sense: what happens to you favourably, what prospers without forcing, the area where the body and circumstances cooperate. It is not a guaranteed financial gain nor a lucky charm: it is the place in the chart where your nature (the Sun), your needs (the Moon) and your way of approaching life (the Ascendant) meet and agree. Investing there pays off.

The formula: day and night

For a day birth, Sun above the horizon, the Part of Fortune equals Ascendant + Moon − Sun. For a night birth, Sun below the horizon, it is reversed: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. In both cases ecliptic longitudes (0° to 360°) are added and the result is brought back between 0° and 360°: the Part therefore has a sign, a degree and a house, exactly like a planet. The Sun is above the horizon when it occupies houses 7 to 12, that is from the Descendant to the Ascendant through the Midheaven.

Two schools coexist. Hellenistic astrology and the Arabic tradition distinguish day and night, and this “sect” rule has come back strongly with the rediscovery of the ancient texts. Many modern books and programs apply the day formula to everyone, for simplicity: it was the most widespread usage in the twentieth century. For a day birth both give the same point; for a night birth they give two different points, often in two different signs. It is worth knowing which one you are reading: the sect formula is the most faithful to the origin, the day formula the most common in printed charts.

Day birth: Ascendant + Moon − Sun

Night birth: Ascendant + Sun − Moon

Ecliptic longitudes from 0° to 360°; the result is brought back between 0° and 360°. Without a birth time there is no Ascendant, hence no Part of Fortune.

A worked example

Camille, a fictional person born in Lyon on 12 May 1990 at 2:30 pm. Her chart gives the Ascendant at 9°12′ Virgo, that is 159°12′ of longitude; the Moon at 21°06′ Sagittarius, that is 261°06′; the Sun at 21°31′ Taurus, that is 51°31′. The Sun is in the 9th house, above the horizon: it is a day birth, and the formula is Ascendant + Moon − Sun.

The calculation: 159°12′ + 261°06′ − 51°31′ = 368°47′. Subtract 360°: 8°47′. Camille’s Part of Fortune is at 8°47′ Aries, in her 8th house (the 8th cusp is at 1°59′ Aries, the 9th at 0°25′ Taurus). If the night formula were wrongly applied, the result would be 9°37′ Aquarius in the 5th house: a completely different message, hence the importance of knowing whether the Sun was up.

For Hugo, born in Bordeaux on 3 November 1992 at 8:15 am with the Sun in the 12th house (also a day birth), the same formula gives 26°07′ Aquarius in the 3rd house. On your own chart, take the exact longitudes from the positions table: the Part is calculated in one line.

How to use the Part of Fortune

The Part of Fortune does not act like a planet: it has no energy of its own, it indicates a place. Its sign says the style of what succeeds for you, its house the area. When you hesitate between two directions, the one that activates the house of your Part is usually the smoother one. A planet in conjunction with the Part (within three degrees) strongly colours that place and makes it a major asset of the chart.

Read it with its ruler too: the planet that governs the sign of the Part, its position and its aspects say how this ease takes shape. And watch the transits: Jupiter or the Sun passing over your Part of Fortune often mark periods when things open up in that area, without having to force.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my Part of Fortune?

Take the longitudes of the Ascendant, the Moon and the Sun (0° to 360°). Day birth, Sun above the horizon (houses 7 to 12): Ascendant + Moon − Sun. Night birth: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. Bring the result back between 0° and 360°: you have the sign and degree of the Part, then its house from the cusps. All these values are on your chart page.

Day formula or night formula?

The Hellenistic and Arabic tradition distinguishes the two according to the Sun’s position, and it is the reading most faithful to the origin. Many modern programs and books apply the day formula to every birth, for simplicity. For a day birth both coincide; for a night birth they give two different points.

Does the Part of Fortune predict money?

Not directly. It points to the area and the style where circumstances favour you and where your efforts pay more than elsewhere. That can concern money if it is in the 2nd or 8th house, but also relationships, creativity, studies or health depending on its house. It is an indicator of ease, not a promise of gain.

Can the Part of Fortune be calculated without a birth time?

No: it depends on the Ascendant, which depends on the time and place. Without a time, the site calculates the chart at noon and shows neither Ascendant nor houses; the Part of Fortune cannot be determined. Find your time on your full birth certificate.
