The chart ruler: the planet that steers your chart
Every sign has a planet that governs it. The one that governs your rising sign is the ruler of the Ascendant, also called the chart ruler: its position by sign and house tells where your vital energy heads and by which path you move forward. Here is the table of the twelve rulers, the method to find yours, and its reading in each house.
What is the chart ruler?
The Ascendant is the sign that was rising in the east at your birth: your way of approaching life, your image, your body. But a sign does not act alone; it has a ruler, a planet that speaks on its behalf. The chart ruler is therefore the planet that governs the sign of your 1st house. Since it represents the person themselves, where it sits in the chart shows where you go spontaneously, what sets you in motion, and the area of life that takes an outsized place in your story, sometimes without your having chosen it.
In the tradition, the ruler of the Ascendant is one of the most important planets of the chart, often ahead of the Sun: vitality, temperament and the direction of a life were read from its sign, house and aspects. Modern astrology has somewhat set it aside in favour of the three pillars Sun, Moon, Ascendant; it nonetheless remains the most direct link between “who you are” and “where it plays out”.
How to find yours
Two steps. First your Ascendant: it requires the birth time, and the free chart calculation gives it to you to the degree. Then the table below: the sign of the Ascendant tells you the ruling planet. Find it in the positions table of your result page: its sign and house are written out plainly. The twelve readings by house further down then apply directly.
Three signs have two rulers. Scorpio is governed by Mars in the tradition and by Pluto since its discovery; Aquarius by Saturn then Uranus; Pisces by Jupiter then Neptune. Both readings are valid and complete each other: the traditional ruler describes the way of acting day to day, the modern ruler the backdrop. When both are in the same house, the message is unambiguous.
Fictional examples: Camille, born in Lyon on 12 May 1990 at 2:30 pm, has the Ascendant in Virgo; her ruler is Mercury, in Taurus in the 9th house: a life heading towards studies, travel and teaching, with a concrete, patient mind. Hugo, born in Bordeaux on 3 November 1992 at 8:15 am, has the Ascendant in Scorpio: Mars, the traditional ruler, is in Cancer in the 9th house, and Pluto, the modern ruler, in Scorpio in the 1st house. For him, Scorpio’s intensity is doubled by Pluto in the 1st house, and Mars’s action looks for meaning, far from home.

The traditional ruler applies to every sign; the three modern rulers are added without replacing it.

The unconscious, retreat and spirituality
Your path is inward: chosen solitude, spirituality, caring for others, creation. Your strength is discreet and expresses itself best behind the scenes or in the service of a cause. Reading the chart ruler: three keys
The ruler’s sign says how you move forward: a ruler in Aries charges, a ruler in Taurus builds, a ruler in Gemini connects. If the ruler is in the Ascendant’s own sign, the personality is of one piece; if it is in a very different sign, you have two registers, the image and the engine, each deserving its place.
The ruler’s aspects say what helps or holds it back: a planet in trine accompanies it, a planet in square makes it work. Finally, a retrograde or isolated ruler points to an energy that builds more slowly, often sturdier in the end. Always read it with the Sun and the Moon: it does not replace them, it shows the direction in which they commit.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know the ruler of my Ascendant?
You first need your Ascendant, hence your birth time: the free chart calculation gives it to you. Then the table above shows the planet that governs that sign. Aries rising: Mars; Taurus or Libra: Venus; Gemini or Virgo: Mercury; Cancer: Moon; Leo: Sun; Sagittarius: Jupiter; Capricorn: Saturn; Scorpio: Mars and Pluto; Aquarius: Saturn and Uranus; Pisces: Jupiter and Neptune.
Traditional or modern ruler: which one should I use?
Both. For Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces, the traditional ruler (Mars, Saturn, Jupiter) describes day-to-day action, the modern ruler (Pluto, Uranus, Neptune) the backdrop. Look first at the house of the traditional ruler, then at the modern one: when they coincide, the message is clear; otherwise, you have two grounds.
Is the chart ruler more important than the Sun?
It is different. The Sun says who you are and what you reach for; the chart ruler says where your energy concretely heads and by which path. In the tradition it was read first for vitality and life direction. Today it is read with the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant: it is the fourth pillar.
Does my chart page show the chart ruler?
Not yet as such. It shows your Ascendant to the degree and, in the positions table, the sign and house of every planet: you just need to find the planet indicated by the table for your rising sign. The pages of the twelve rising signs also discuss it, sign by sign.
