Calculate your Moon sign

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days: the date is not always enough, the time settles it. Enter both and you get your Moon in sign and house, explained, with your complete birth chart.

Free, no sign-up. Astronomical precision to the arc minute.

  • ✦The Moon’s position is computed to the minute from astronomical ephemerides, not from a monthly table.
  • ✦Daylight saving, wartime hours, historical time zones: all corrected automatically from the date and the city.
  • ✦You also get the house of your Moon, its phase, its aspects, and the rest of the chart: Sun, rising sign, planets.

What is the Moon sign?

The Sun sign, the one everybody knows, says who you are and where you are heading. The Moon sign says how you feel. The Moon stands for your inner world: the emotions as they rise before any thought, the needs that must be met for you to feel well, the way you look for comfort when the day has been hard. It is also the body’s memory, habits, the bond with the mother and the home, everything that settled early and acts without being noticed.

In a birth chart, the Moon is one of the three pillars with the Sun and the Ascendant. Many people who do not recognise themselves in their Sun sign suddenly find themselves in their Moon: a Cancer Moon explains the sensitivity of a Capricorn Sun, an Aries Moon the impatience of a Pisces Sun. In love and family life, in intimacy, the Moon is what people actually live with.

The Moon is read by sign (the colour of your emotions), by house (the area of life where your needs show) and through its aspects (what supports or shakes it). The sign is the front door: the twelve portraits are below.

Why the birth time matters

The Moon is by far the fastest body in the chart: it travels the whole zodiac in twenty-seven days and moves twelve to fifteen degrees a day. It therefore stays a little over two days in each sign, two and a half at most. As a result, on roughly every other day the Moon changes sign during the day. Two people born on the same date, one in the morning and one in the evening, can have different Moons.

If you know your time, the result is certain. If you do not, the calculation is made at noon: it is right as long as the Moon did not change sign that day, and the chart page shows its exact position to the degree. A Moon at 1° or 29° of a sign on a day without a time deserves a check against your full birth certificate, free from the registry.

What your Moon says about you

First, your needs. A Moon in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) needs stability, tangible things, things that last; a Moon in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) needs connection, depth, a space to feel without justifying itself; a Moon in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) needs to talk, to understand, to breathe; a Moon in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) needs momentum, warmth, room to be itself.

Then, your reactions. The Moon describes the first movement, the one that comes before words: withdrawing, charging ahead, analysing, soothing. Knowing your Moon sign means recognising that reflex and being able to choose it rather than be run by it. Finally, your security: what truly reassures you, and what you need from others to feel at home. In a couple, the two Moons often say more than the two Suns.

Moon, Sun, Ascendant: three signs, three roles

The Sun is your conscious identity, the direction you give your life, what you reach for. The Ascendant is how you step into the world, your image, the first contact. The Moon is what happens inside, in intimacy and under pressure. You can show a very assured Leo rising, aim for Virgo Sun goals and need, in the evening, the cocoon of a Cancer Moon: all three are true at once.

That is why a serious portrait combines the three. The site’s 144 Sun and Moon pages cross your Sun sign with your Moon sign; your chart page ties it all together, houses and aspects included.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my Moon sign for free?

Enter your date, time and place of birth in the form above: the Moon’s position is computed instantly from astronomical ephemerides, then shown by sign, degree and house, with its interpretation and your whole birth chart.

Can I know my Moon sign without a birth time?

Often, yes: the Moon stays a little over two days in a sign, and many days pass entirely within the same one. The calculation is then made at noon. If the position shown is close to the start or the end of a sign, the Moon may have changed sign that day: find your time on your full birth certificate to settle it.

What is the difference between the Moon sign and the Sun sign?

The Sun sign is the Sun’s position on the day you were born: your identity, your direction. The Moon sign is the Moon’s position at your birth time: your emotions, your needs, the way you feel safe. The first shows in your choices, the second in your reactions.

Does the Moon sign change over a lifetime?

No: your natal Moon is fixed at birth. However, the Moon in the sky passes over your natal Moon every twenty-seven days (the lunar return), and its monthly phase colours your mood. The site’s lunar calendar gives the Moon’s sign for every day.
