Your dominant element: fire, earth, air or water

Being an Aries does not make you a fire temperament. The dominant element is calculated over the whole chart: every planet, the Ascendant and the Midheaven vote for the element of their sign, each with a different weight. Here is how this site weighs it, and what each temperament gives.

The four elements, one sentence each

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is momentum: acting, daring, shining, believing. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is substance: building, lasting, touching, proving. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is connection: thinking, exchanging, linking, understanding. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) is feeling: sensing, protecting, merging, transforming. Everyone has all four; the distribution makes the temperament.

The elements read in pairs. Fire and air are the extroverted elements, turned towards the outside and movement; earth and water are the introverted elements, turned towards stability and the inner world. Fire and water are the elements of emotion, air and earth those of reason. A chart that concentrates fire and air lives fast and thinks out loud; an earth and water chart builds in silence and feels deeply.

How this site calculates your dominant element

Planets are not simply counted: a Moon weighs more than a generational Pluto. On your chart page, every point in the sky adds its weight to the element of the sign it occupies. The Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant count 3 points each: the three pillars of personality. Mercury, Venus, Mars and the Midheaven count 2 points: the personal planets and the vocation. Jupiter and Saturn, the social planets, count 1.5 points. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, which stay years in a sign and speak first of a generation, count 1 point. The North Node, Chiron and Lilith count 0.5 points; the South Node, always opposite the North Node, is not counted a second time.

The total comes to 24.5 points with the birth time (19.5 without the Ascendant and the Midheaven). The element that gathers the most points is your dominant; the dominants section of the result page shows the four bars and the winning mode, right next to the positions table. When two elements are almost tied, you are a mixed temperament, and that is information in itself: read both portraits.

A fictional example: Camille, born in Lyon on 12 May 1990 at 2:30 pm, has the Sun and Mercury in Taurus, the Ascendant in Virgo, and Saturn, Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn. Earth totals 11.5 points, water 5.5, fire 5, air 2.5: a very clear earth temperament, with air lacking. Her Moon in Sagittarius and her Venus in Aries are the only real fire contributions, and it is to them that Camille owes her drive.

The four temperaments

The portrait of your dominant element. If two elements are close, read both.

Fire dominant: momentum

Signs:AriesLeoSagittarius

With fire in the lead, you run on enthusiasm. You start fast, you believe in what you do, you carry others along, and you need a goal that gets you up in the morning. Confidence comes naturally, so does generosity: you give without counting, time, energy, ideas. Your presence is noticed even when you are not trying to shine. The flip side is impatience: waiting, repeating, polishing cost you, and anger can rise as fast as it falls. You tend to promise more than reality allows, out of sincere optimism. The levers: channel the energy into a project with a beginning and an end, move physically every day, and surround yourself with earth that grounds without extinguishing. Your strength is to light the fire; learn to keep it burning rather than relight it.

Earth dominant: substance

Signs:TaurusVirgoCapricorn

With earth in the lead, you are reliable, practical and patient. You prefer proof to promise, a result to an intention. You build step by step, you keep your commitments, you know how to manage money, time and the body. People count on you, and you like that. Your senses are developed: taste, touch and comfort matter, and beauty comes through what is well made. The flip side is slowness to change: you can stay in a familiar situation long after it stopped suiting you, and pragmatism sometimes turns into scepticism towards anything that cannot be measured. The levers: allow yourself an attempt without guarantee from time to time, let emotions have a say in decisions, and schedule breaks the way you schedule everything else. Your strength is to make things last; learn also to let go of what is finished.

Air dominant: connection

Signs:GeminiLibraAquarius

With air in the lead, you live in ideas and exchanges. You understand quickly, you connect distant things, you love talking, writing, debating, learning. You step back naturally: where others get carried away, you analyse, and your objective view often calms situations. Relationships are your oxygen, provided they stay light and stimulating. The flip side is distance: feeling can come after understanding, and people sometimes find you detached, or scattered across ten interests without going deep into one. Deciding costs you when every option has a case. The levers: pick two subjects to really dig into, get the body moving to come down from the head, and name what you feel before explaining it. Your strength is to understand; learn to inhabit what you understand as well.

Water dominant: feeling

Signs:CancerScorpioPisces

With water in the lead, you feel everything, often before it is said. Your empathy is real, your intuition reliable, your emotional memory long. You create deep bonds, you protect those you love, you need intimacy and meaning to commit. The imagination is rich and often feeds a creative or caring vocation. The flip side is permeability: atmospheres pass through you, other people’s moods become yours, and an emotion can circle for a long time before settling. You may avoid clear-cut decisions for fear of hurting or being hurt. The levers: clear boundaries (your time, your space, your energy), a practice that discharges emotion (writing, swimming, walking), and a little air to put words on what rises. Your strength is to feel; learn not to carry everything.

When an element is missing

An element at 0 or close to it says as much as a dominant: it is what you have to learn, or borrow from others.

Fire

Little or no fire: energy does not come from a spontaneous surge but from reason, habit or connection. You may lack confidence at the start, doubt your right to take up space, put off what requires boldness. You often admire enthusiastic people and attract fire partners. The lever: start small but start, and celebrate every step to manufacture the momentum that does not come by itself.

Earth

Little or no earth: ideas, emotions and drive are there, grounding is missing. Money, the body, deadlines and routine can feel like abstract constraints, and projects stop before the concrete phase. You often attract very practical people, who hold the frame for you. The lever: a minimal, visible structure (a diary, a budget, a sleep habit) that supports without confining.

Air

Little or no air: you live first, you put words on it afterwards. Stepping back, objectivity, detached discussion can feel artificial, and misunderstandings grow from what was left unsaid. You learn through experience rather than theory. The lever: write down what you feel, ask for an outside opinion before a big decision, and accept that a conversation can stay light.

Water

Little or no water: emotion is present, but it does not show easily and you do not always trust it. You may seem cold, or be surprised by an emotion that overflows all at once after being held in for a long time. Intimacy requires a conscious effort. The lever: time alone, arts or places that move you (music, water, nature), and close people you can tell what is going on, even clumsily.

And the modes: cardinal, fixed, mutable

The same weights are used to calculate your dominant mode, the second dominant shown on your chart. The cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) launch: a cardinal dominant gives initiative, a taste for starting, and the challenge of finishing.

The fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) hold: a fixed dominant gives constancy, loyalty, depth, and the challenge of moving when it is time.

The mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt: a mutable dominant gives flexibility, curiosity, a sense of transition, and the challenge of choosing. Cross element and mode: fixed earth does not live like mutable earth.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Sun sign my dominant element?

Not necessarily. The Sun weighs 3 points out of 24.5: it counts a lot, but the Moon and the Ascendant weigh as much, and the other planets complete the picture. An Aries Sun surrounded by planets in Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn gives an earth dominant, not fire. It is common, and it explains why many people do not recognise themselves in their sign.

How is the dominant element calculated?

Every point in the chart adds a weight to the element of its sign: 3 for the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant; 2 for Mercury, Venus, Mars and the Midheaven; 1.5 for Jupiter and Saturn; 1 for Uranus, Neptune and Pluto; 0.5 for the North Node, Chiron and Lilith. The element with the highest total is your dominant. The bars are shown on your chart page.

What if two elements are tied?

You are a mixed temperament, and that is real information: the two elements take turns depending on the situation. Read both portraits, then look at which one carries the Sun, the Moon or the Ascendant: that is usually the one that expresses itself first.

Does the dominant element change without a birth time?

Without a time, the Ascendant and the Midheaven (5 points between them) are not counted, and the total drops to 19.5. The dominant stays the same in most cases, but a balanced chart can tip. If you find your time, recalculate: the result will be complete.
