The stellium: when several planets gather
Three or more planets in the same sign or the same house: that is a stellium. That sign, or that area of life, then weighs far more than your Sun sign alone. Here is how to spot it in your chart and what it changes, sign by sign and house by house.
Definition: how many planets does it take?
A stellium (from the Latin stella, star) is a gathering of planets in the same sign or the same house. Most astrologers use the word from three planets upwards; some authors reserve it for four or more and call a group of three a “cluster”. Both usages exist and point to the same idea: a concentration of energy that makes one sector of the chart dominant. The more numerous and personal the planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars), the louder the stellium speaks; a group of slow planets (Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) mostly says something about your generation.
The ten classical planets, from the Sun to Pluto, are usually counted. The Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Nodes, Chiron or Lilith strengthen a stellium when they join it, but do not create one on their own. A stellium by sign and a stellium by house do not always coincide: three planets in Capricorn can spread over two houses, and three planets in the 10th house over two signs. The two readings complement each other: the sign gives the style, the house gives the ground.
How to spot it in your chart
On your chart wheel, a stellium is visible at once: several symbols packed into the same portion of the circle, often with conjunction lines drawn between them. The express reading on the result page flags it by itself as soon as three of the ten classical planets share a sign or a house, naming the planets involved and the themes that sign concentrates. The positions table then lets you check the degrees: a stellium squeezed into ten degrees acts like one big planet; a stellium spread across the whole sign keeps nuances between its members.
A fictional example: Camille, born in Lyon on 12 May 1990 at 2:30 pm, has Saturn, Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn, between 9° and 25°. It is a generational stellium, shared by most people born between 1988 and 1991: high standards towards structures, a need to rebuild what no longer holds, a serious relationship with work and time. In Camille’s chart it spreads over the 4th and 5th houses: family, home and creativity are the grounds where this gravity plays out.
The Sun–Mercury–Venus stellium, the most common
Mercury never strays more than 28° from the Sun, Venus more than 47°. Both planets are therefore very often in the Sun’s sign or in a neighbouring one, and the Sun–Mercury–Venus trio in a single sign is by far the most widespread stellium. It is no less real for that: it gives a personality of one piece, where identity, thinking and tastes speak the same language. You think the way you are, you love the way you think.
Its downside is the blind spot: with everyone in the same sign, the outlook is coherent but offers little contrast. The planets outside the stellium, especially the Moon and Mars, bring the missing relief; look at where they are and what they ask for.

Living with a stellium: the levers
A stellium is not an imbalance to correct: it is your speciality. It shows where you have the most energy, the most talent and, often, the most inner work to do, because everything happens there at once. The first lever is to own it: the sign or house concerned deserves to be at the centre of your choices, not on the sidelines.
The second lever is to look at the opposite side. The sign opposite and the house opposite are often empty or sparsely occupied: that is where what you lack in order to breathe is found. A stellium in the 10th house gains from feeding the 4th; a stellium in Aries, from learning Libra’s patience. The isolated planets elsewhere in the chart play the same balancing role: they are few, hence precious.

Frequently asked questions
Is a stellium three or four planets?
Both definitions exist. The most common usage speaks of a stellium from three planets in the same sign or house; some authors require four and call the group of three a “cluster”. In every case the idea is the same: a concentration that makes this sign or house dominant. This site flags it from three classical planets.
Are the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the same sign a real stellium?
Yes, and it is the most frequent one, because Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun. It gives a coherent personality where identity, thinking and tastes go the same way. It is simply less rare than a stellium that gathers independent planets such as the Moon, Mars or Saturn.
Does a stellium by sign count more than a stellium by house?
They do not say the same thing. The stellium by sign colours the way of being, the style; the stellium by house points to the area of life where the energy concentrates. When both coincide, the effect is strongest. The stellium by house requires the birth time.
How do I know if I have a stellium?
Calculate your chart for free on the site: the wheel shows the grouped planets, and the express reading explicitly states “You have a stellium in…” as soon as three classical planets share a sign or a house, with the themes it concentrates.
