Calculate your North Node

The North Node is not a planet: it is the point where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s path. In astrology it shows the direction your life pulls you towards, what makes you grow even when it is uncomfortable. Enter your birth data and you get your North Node by sign and house, your South Node opposite, and your whole birth chart.

Free, no sign-up. Astronomical precision to the arc minute.

  • ✦True Node computed to the minute (the Mean Node differs by less than two degrees): the sign is certain, except right on the boundary.
  • ✦The South Node is placed automatically opposite: the whole axis, by sign and house, appears on the wheel.
  • ✦With the birth time, the house of the North Node tells you in which area of life this direction plays out.

The nodal axis in a nutshell

The lunar Nodes are the two points where the Moon’s path cuts the ecliptic, the Sun’s path. When a new or full moon happens near a Node, there is an eclipse: that is their astronomical reality. Always 180° apart, they form an axis, and it is this axis that astrology reads, not an isolated point.

The South Node describes what you already know how to do: your assets, your reflexes, ground so familiar it becomes a comfort zone where you go round in circles. The North Node describes what calls you: qualities to develop, an area where you are clumsy at first and where every step counts double. The rule is simple: you start from the South, lean on it, and walk towards the North. Neither is good or bad; the movement is what matters.

True Node or Mean Node?

The Node moves backwards along the zodiac, but not at a constant speed: the Sun’s pull makes it wobble around its average position. The Mean Node smooths this motion; the True Node follows the actual position. The gap between the two never exceeds about two degrees, which only changes the sign for births right on the boundary between two signs. This site computes the True Node, like most current software; the chart page shows its longitude to the degree, so you can check for yourself whether you are near a boundary.

An eighteen-and-a-half-year cycle

The Node takes about eighteen and a half years to go round the zodiac, backwards, spending about eighteen months in each sign. It therefore returns to its natal position around ages 18–19, 37 and 55–56: these are the nodal returns, periods when the question of direction comes up again, often with a change of course, a move, a meeting or a break-up that realigns the trajectory. Halfway through, around 9, 28 and 46–47, the Node in the sky passes over your South Node: a time to take stock of what you have built before setting off again.

These ages do not predict events; they mark seasons when what your nodal axis says becomes easier to hear. Knowing them helps you not to be surprised by a need for change that arrives right then.

What the North Node says

By sign, the North Node names the quality to cultivate: autonomy for a North Node in Aries, patience and substance for a North Node in Taurus, depth for a North Node in Scorpio, method for a North Node in Virgo. It is never a quality that comes naturally; it is precisely the one you admire in others without daring to claim it.

By house, it points to the training ground: the 7th house places growth in the one-to-one relationship, the 10th in vocation and public standing, the 4th in family and home, the 6th in daily life and work well done. Sign and house are read together: the sign says how, the house says where.

And the South Node

The South Node always sits in the opposite sign and house. It describes your innate talents and your comfort zone: what to keep as a foundation, not what to disown. A South Node in Leo knows how to shine; the growth of a North Node in Aquarius lies in putting that talent at the service of a group. Every North Node page on the site links to its South Node, to read the whole axis.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my North Node for free?

Enter your date, time and place of birth in the form above: the North Node (True Node) is computed instantly and shown by sign, degree and house, with its interpretation, your South Node and your whole birth chart.

Do I need my birth time to know my North Node?

For the sign, rarely: the Node stays about eighteen months in a sign, so the time only matters on the exact day it changes. For the house, yes: houses depend on time and place. Without a time, the calculation is made at noon and houses are not shown.

What is the difference between the True Node and the Mean Node?

The Mean Node is a smoothed position; the True Node follows the real wobble of the point, less than two degrees around the average. Both give the same sign in the vast majority of cases. This site uses the True Node.

What happens at the nodal return?

Around 18–19, 37 and 55–56, the Node in the sky returns to your natal North Node. These are seasons of reorientation: the direction described by your axis becomes more pressing, and the choices of that period often weigh for a long time. Nothing is written in advance; it is a moment when listening to that call is especially useful.
