Divisional chart
D2 Hora chart: the chart of wealth in Vedic astrology
The D2, or Hora chart, is the divisional chart of wealth in Vedic astrology: it splits each sign into two halves of 15°, the Sun’s hora (Leo) and the Moon’s hora (Cancer). Depending on the half each planet falls in, money is won through drive and visibility, or kept through steadiness and care. It is read with houses 2 and 11 of your D1.
What is the D2 Hora chart in Vedic astrology?
The D2, called the Hora, is one of the sixteen divisional charts Parashara describes in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the great treatise of Jyotish. A divisional chart, or varga, cuts each sign into parts and forms a new wheel, with its own Ascendant, devoted to one area of life: the principle is explained in divisional charts.
The area of the D2 is wealth: your resources, what you earn, keep and build up over the years. The word hora means “hour” and, here, “half”. Varahamihira reports that it is drawn from ahoratra, day and night, by dropping the first and the last syllable: the day of the Sun, the night of the Moon, the two halves this chart sets side by side.
How the D2 is calculated: the Sun’s hora and the Moon’s hora
Parashara’s rule cuts each sign into two parts of 15°. In an odd sign (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius), the first 15 degrees go to the Sun’s hora, Leo, and the last 15 to the Moon’s hora, Cancer. In an even sign (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces), the order is reversed: Cancer first, then Leo.
So the D2 has only two signs: every planet, Rahu and the chart’s Ascendant fall in Leo or in Cancer, and their degree is multiplied by two. A Venus at 10° Taurus, an even sign, sits in the Moon’s hora, at 20° Cancer; a Mars at 20° Aries, an odd sign, also moves into the Moon’s hora, at 10° Cancer. The degrees are those of the sidereal zodiac, with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
On My Birth Chart, Ketu is always placed opposite Rahu, in every chart: in the D2, it therefore shows up in Aquarius or Capricorn, as Rahu’s mirror.
Sun’s hora or Moon’s hora: what does a planet say in each?
The Sun’s hora is wealth that is won: it comes from initiative, authority, what you dare to show and carry in your own name. The Moon’s hora is wealth that is kept and nurtured: it comes from steadiness, care, the bond with the public, what you grow with patience. Neither is better than the other: they show the path your resources take.
Tradition adds a rule of affinity: some planets give their best fruit in one of the two halves.
- The Sun, Mars and Jupiter are at ease in the Sun’s hora: money follows boldness, responsibility, the knowledge you pass on.
- The Moon, Venus and Saturn are at ease in the Moon’s hora: money follows regularity, taste, patience, goods that last.
- Mercury gives its fruit in both: it takes on the color of its half, trade and speech on one side, management and listening on the other.
A planet outside its half of affinity closes no door: it asks for another method. A Mars in the Moon’s hora earns when it trades the big splash for steady effort; a Venus in the Sun’s hora, when it dares to show what its talent is worth.
How to read the D2 with houses 2 and 11 of the D1
The D2 is never read on its own: it refines what the D1, the Rasi chart, already promises. Two houses there speak of money. House 2, dhana bhava (the house of wealth), shows what you accumulate: savings, possessions, the family that provides, the speech that makes your worth heard. House 11, labha bhava (the house of gains), shows what comes in: income, networks, wishes that come true.
- In the D1, find the signs of houses 2 and 11, their rulers and the planets they hold.
- In the D2, look at the hora each of these rulers falls in: the ruler of 11 shows how money arrives, the ruler of 2 how it is kept.
- Locate Jupiter, the karaka (significator) of wealth, and the hora it occupies.
- Note the D2 Ascendant: in Leo, it hands the key to the Sun; in Cancer, to the Moon. Its ruler shows your natural way with resources.
- Finally, open the Vimshottari dashas: the period of a ruler of 2 or 11 brings these matters to the fore.
Your Western chart has its own house 2, the house of resources, described in the site’s houses. Reading it next to the D2, and adding the D11, which another reading treats as the chart of gains, is the very spirit of the site: crossing the charts.
A sample D2 reading
Take a D1 with a Scorpio Ascendant. Its house 2 is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter; its house 11 is Virgo, ruled by Mercury. Jupiter stands at 20° Cancer, exalted, in house 9; Mercury is at 22° Leo, in house 10.
In the D2, Cancer is even: its last 15 degrees go to Leo, so Jupiter moves into the Sun’s hora, at 10° Leo, where tradition likes it. Leo is odd: its last 15 degrees go to Cancer, so Mercury moves into the Moon’s hora, at 14° Cancer. What is kept (the ruler of 2) grows when the person takes the initiative and passes on what they know, with Jupiter in house 9, the house of knowledge and luck. What comes in (the ruler of 11) comes from a trade practiced steadily, loyal clients, a network kept alive.
The lever fits in two moves: step forward in your own name to build capital, look after relationships to bring in gains. The mahadasha of Jupiter or that of Mercury brings both paths to the fore.
How accurate does the birth time need to be for the D2?
The D2 Ascendant changes sign about every hour on average, twice as fast as the D1 Ascendant. Planets rarely change hora within an hour: only the Moon, which covers 15° in a little over a day, moves from one half to the other about once a day.
A time known to within half an hour is often enough for the planets, not always for the D2 Ascendant. Without a time, the Vedic option is disabled on the site. The long-form birth certificate often shows the time, and in France the full copy of the birth record does; the rising sign calculator shows how fast the Ascendant moves.
A rounded time can be put to the test: calculate the chart half an hour earlier, then later. If the D2 Ascendant stays in the same sign, you can rely on it; if it changes, focus on the horas of the planets.
How to open the D2 chart on My Birth Chart
The D2 is on your chart page, at the wheel. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto appear there in the background, since classical Vedic astrology reads the seven visible planets and the nodes.
- Calculate your chart with your date, exact time and place of birth.
- At the wheel, choose Vedic (sidereal) instead of Tropical (Western): the D1 opens.
- In the list of twenty divisional charts, choose D2.
- The wheel, the positions (sign, degree, house) and the line that gives the chart’s meaning switch to the D2.
A money question asked to Your chart answers you, the site’s chat, also draws on the D2, and the answer says clearly when it speaks in Vedic terms.
Calculate your chart with your exact birth time, switch to Vedic and open the D2: your two horas are waiting.
