D12 Dwadashamsha: what the chart of parents says about your lineage

The D12, or Dwadashamsha (“the twelfth part”), is the divisional chart of parents in Vedic astrology: it describes your bond with your father and your mother, the lineage you come from and what you receive from it. Each sign is cut into twelve parts of 2°30′, a small zodiac nested inside the sign. You read the Sun, the Moon and houses 4 and 9 first.

What is the D12 Dwadashamsha chart?

In Sanskrit, dwadasha means “twelve” and amsha means “part”: the Dwadashamsha (also spelled Dvadashamsha) is the chart of the twelfths of a sign. It is one of the sixteen charts Parashara describes in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the founding text of Jyotish, and he assigns it to the parents. Like every divisional chart, it starts from your birth chart, the D1 Rasi, and zooms in on a single area of life.

That area is the family you come from: how you experienced the presence of your father and your mother, the values, talents and habits passed down from one generation to the next. The D12 does not tell their life story for them: it describes your side of the story, what you received and what you make of it.

How is the D12 calculated? A zodiac inside each sign

It is one of the simplest rules among the divisional charts: each 30° sign is cut into twelve parts of 2°30′, and those parts run through the twelve signs in order, starting from the sign itself. The twelve parts make exactly one full round: every sign holds a complete miniature zodiac that begins at home.

The degree works with the same magnifying glass: multiply the planet’s degree within its sign by twelve and remove whole rounds of 30°. A Sun at 14° Gemini thus falls in the sixth part, in Scorpio, at 18° (14 × 12 = 168, minus five times 30°). Three landmarks to find your way:

  • A planet at 1° Taurus is in the first part: it stays in Taurus in the D12.
  • At 16° Libra, it is in the seventh part (from 15° to 17°30′): it moves to the opposite sign, Aries.
  • At 29° Pisces, it is in the twelfth and last part: it falls in the sign just before, Aquarius.

This zodiac within the zodiac is not unique to India: Greek and Roman astrology already knew the dodecatemoria, twelfths of a sign of 2°30′ whose first part belongs to the sign itself.

D12 chart for parents: what to look at for the father and the mother

The D12 is read as a chart in its own right: it has its own Ascendant, and its houses, in whole signs, start from that Ascendant. Here are the landmarks to check, in this order.

  • The D12 Ascendant and its lord: the overall tone of your relationship with your family of origin, the way you carry what it gave you.
  • The Sun, the father: its sign, its house and the planets alongside it describe the image of your father, the authority you received, the confidence he gave you or the confidence you had to build on your own.
  • The Moon, the mother: emotional safety, care, the memory of home, what soothes you.
  • House 4 and its lord: the mother, the home of your childhood, your inner ground.
  • House 9 and its lord: the father, transmission, the values and faith of the lineage. Some schools read the father from house 10: look at both and keep what is confirmed.

A planet’s strength is judged as in the D1: a Sun exalted (in Aries) or in its own sign (Leo) speaks of solid support, an exalted Moon (in Taurus) of a nurturing bond with the mother. A debilitated planet, like the Sun in Libra or the Moon in Scorpio, condemns nothing: it shows the relationship that took the most work, the one where you grew the most.

An example of a D12 reading

Take an imaginary chart whose D12 has an Aries Ascendant. The Sun is in Sagittarius, so in house 9, next to Jupiter; the Moon is in Cancer, in house 4, with Saturn.

The Sun in house 9, in Jupiter’s sign and alongside Jupiter, draws a father seen as a landmark: someone who passes on convictions, a love of learning, perhaps an opening to travel or teaching. From this side of the lineage, the person mainly receives values, and the desire to understand the world.

The Moon at home in Cancer speaks of a deep, nurturing bond with the mother. Saturn beside it adds restraint: a mother who carried a great deal, affection more modest than demonstrative. Saturn slows things down to make them last: this person received real solidity, and can learn to offer themselves the gentleness that was not always put into words.

How to read the D12 with the D1 and the other charts

A divisional chart is never read alone. The D12 refines a promise the D1 already makes: start with the Sun, the Moon, houses 4 and 9 and their lords in the birth chart, then see where they fall in the D12. A planet strong in both charts gives steady support; strong in one and fragile in the other, it tells of a bond more nuanced than first impressions suggest.

Other charts sharpen the picture. The D40 Khavedamsha details the maternal heritage and the D45 Akshavedamsha the paternal heritage, with a far stricter birth time requirement. Among the Jaimini karakas, the Matrikaraka, the planet of the mother, adds one more confirmation. Finally, the Vimshottari dashas show when these themes come back to the foreground: the period of the Sun, the Moon or the lord of house 9 often brings family matters to the surface.

The Western chart keeps its place: your tropical houses 4 and 10 also speak of the parents. When the Western and the Vedic point the same way, you hold a solid reading: that is the method described in crossing the charts.

How accurate does your birth time need to be for the D12?

The D1 Ascendant changes sign every two hours on average; the D12 Ascendant changes twelve times faster, about every ten minutes, more or less depending on the sign. The planets move slowly: the Sun takes two and a half days to cross a 2°30′ part. Only the Moon, which moves about half a degree an hour, changes part within four to five hours.

So it is the D12 Ascendant, and the houses that follow from it, that call for a reliable time. The full version of your birth certificate is the best source, as short versions do not always show the time. If your time is rounded to the quarter hour, read the D12 planets in their signs first, then the chart’s Ascendant with caution.

How to open your D12 chart on the site

The site calculates the D12 in the sidereal zodiac, with the Lahiri ayanamsa and Parashara’s rule of division. It needs your exact birth time: without it, the Vedic view stays switched off, because the Ascendant and the houses depend on it.

  1. Calculate your birth chart with your date, time and place of birth.
  2. At the wheel, choose Vedic (sidereal) instead of Tropical (Western): the D1 Rasi opens.
  3. In the list of charts, choose D12: the wheel, the planets’ positions (sign, degree, house) and the line that gives the chart’s meaning all change.
  4. Note the D12 Ascendant, then the Sun, the Moon and houses 4 and 9, and compare them with the D1.

Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, are calculated as mean nodes, with Ketu always opposite Rahu, including in the D12. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto appear in the background: classical Vedic astrology reads the seven visible planets and the nodes.

Calculate your chart with the exact time, switch to Vedic and choose the D12: your lineage has its own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is the D12 chart in Vedic astrology?

The D12, or Dwadashamsha, is the divisional chart of parents. Each sign is divided into twelve parts of 2°30′, starting from the sign itself. It shows the bond with the father and the mother, the lineage and what you receive from it, starting with the Sun, the Moon and houses 4 and 9.

How do you read the father and the mother in the D12 chart?

The Sun represents the father and the Moon the mother. Look at their sign, their house and the planets alongside them in the D12, then at house 9 (the father, or house 10 in some schools) and house 4 (the mother) with their lords. Always confirm with the D1 before drawing conclusions.

How do you calculate a planet’s D12 position?

Find which 2°30′ slice it sits in (0° to 2°30′ is the first, 2°30′ to 5° the second, and so on), then count that many signs from its own sign, its own sign being the first. A planet at 16° Libra is in the seventh part: it moves to Aries in the D12.

How accurate does the birth time need to be for the D12?

The D12 Ascendant changes sign about every ten minutes on average. To read its houses, you need a birth time reliable to within a few minutes. The planets, apart from the Moon, stay well placed even with an approximate time.

What is the difference between the D12, the D40 and the D45?

The D12 gives the overall view of the parents and the lineage. The D40 Khavedamsha refines the maternal heritage and the D45 Akshavedamsha the paternal heritage; they need a far more precise time, to within two or three minutes. Start with the D12, then move on to the finer charts if your birth time allows it.

Where can I see my D12 chart on the site?

Calculate your chart with the exact time, then, at the wheel, choose Vedic (sidereal): the D1 opens. In the list of divisional charts, choose D12. The wheel, the positions and the line that gives the chart’s meaning switch to the D12.
