D40 Khavedamsha: the chart of your maternal legacy and of good fortune

The D40 chart, or Khavedamsha, is the divisional chart that cuts each sign into forty parts of 45′. Parashara gives it for the auspicious and inauspicious effects of life; tradition also reads in it the maternal legacy, what your mother’s line passes on to you. Its Ascendant changes about every three minutes, so it can only be read with the time on your birth certificate.

What is the D40 Khavedamsha chart?

The D40 is one of the sixteen divisional charts Parashara describes in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the founding treatise of Vedic astrology. Its name reads as a number, because the old texts write numbers with words, from units to tens: kha, the empty sky, stands for zero; veda, the four Vedas, stands for four; amsha means “portion”. Khavedamsha is “the fortieth portion”.

Parashara assigns it the auspicious and inauspicious effects (shubha and ashubha): the share of ease and the share of effort that life holds for you, beyond what the D1, the chart of the signs, shows. The tradition that carried his teaching forward reads in it above all the maternal legacy: what your mother’s line passes on to you, its gifts, its ways of loving and of holding firm, and also the patterns it is up to you to rework.

It is a fine chart, one of the most precise along with the D45 and the D60: you turn to it after the D1 and the D9, to understand where a strength or a weakness the chart already shows comes from.

How is the D40 chart calculated?

Each 30° sign is cut into forty parts of 45′, three quarters of a degree each, in the sidereal zodiac (see the ayanamsa). Where the count starts depends on whether the birth sign is odd or even:

  • Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius): count from Aries. The 1st part gives Aries, the 2nd Taurus, and so on.
  • Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces): count from Libra.
  • The degree in the D40: the planet’s degree within its sign, multiplied by forty, minus the full rounds of 30°.

Example: at 8° Gemini, an odd sign, a planet is in the 11th part (from 7°30′ to 8°15′); eleven signs from Aries lead to Aquarius, at 20°. At 8° Taurus, an even sign, it counts from Libra and lands in Leo. At the same degree, an odd sign and an even sign always give two opposite signs.

What to look at in a D40 chart

The D40 is read like any divisional chart: an Ascendant, twelve whole-sign houses counted from it, planets in stronger or weaker dignity. What changes is the question you ask it: what do I receive from my line, and what asks me for effort?

  • The D40 Ascendant and its ruler: the overall colour of the legacy. A ruler in an angle (houses 1, 4, 7, 10) or a trine (houses 5 and 9) points to a legacy that carries you.
  • The Moon, which signifies the mother, and the 4th house, the house of the mother, the home and inner happiness: their condition describes what your mother’s line leaves you deep down.
  • The benefics (Jupiter, Venus) in angles and trines: the auspicious effects, the support that comes without forcing.
  • Houses 6, 8 and 12, the houses of trials: where the legacy asks for work. They are fields of effort, never verdicts.
  • Dignity: a planet exalted or in its own sign passes things on well; debilitated, it points to what is yours to rework.

Always read the D40 with the D1: a planet weak in the D1 but strong in the D40 has hidden support, coming from your line. That is the method of crossing the charts: none is read on its own.

D40 chart reading: an example

Take a D40 with Cancer rising. The Moon, ruler of the Ascendant and significator of the mother, sits in Taurus, its sign of exaltation, in the 11th house, the house of gains and support: the maternal line passes on emotional stability and a gift for surrounding yourself with people who open doors.

Saturn occupies the 4th house, in Libra, where it is exalted too. The legacy weighs: duties, a keen sense of responsibility, perhaps a mother or grandmother who held the household together single-handedly. But Saturn slows things down to make them last: what these women carried with effort becomes, in you, endurance and a talent for building things that hold.

Then you cross-check. If the Moon is strong in the D1, the signature is confirmed; if it is afflicted there, the D40 says the support exists deep down and is waiting to be recognised. The Vimshottari dashas give the timing: this legacy is felt most during the periods of the Moon or Saturn.

How accurate must your birth time be for the D40?

The D40 Ascendant changes sign on average every three minutes, while the D1 Ascendant changes every two hours. At the latitudes of France, that ranges from under two minutes when Pisces or Aries is rising to about four minutes for Virgo or Libra. The twelve houses of the D40 follow its Ascendant.

So the D40 can only be read with the time on your birth certificate: in France, the full copy of the birth record shows it; in the US, the long-form certificate often does. A time remembered by the family (“around noon”) is not enough, and even an official time is sometimes rounded: keep a margin.

The planets are steadier: the Sun stays nearly eighteen hours in the same part, the slow planets whole days. Only the Moon changes part every 70 to 90 minutes or so. The ayanamsa matters too: a gap of one degree between two schools moves every planet by more than a part, and the site calculates with Lahiri.

To test your time, calculate your chart for the time on the certificate, then two minutes earlier and two minutes later. If the D40 Ascendant does not move, read its houses with confidence; if it changes, focus on the signs and dignities of the planets.

How to open your D40 chart on the site

On My Birth Chart, the D40 is calculated from your birth chart, with the exact time: without a time, the Vedic option stays disabled, because the Ascendant and the houses depend on it.

  1. Calculate your chart with your date, time to the minute and place of birth.
  2. At the wheel, choose “Vedic (sidereal)” instead of “Tropical (Western)”: the D1 opens.
  3. In the list of charts, choose the D40. The wheel, the positions (sign, degree, house) and the line that gives the meaning of the chart change; the site reminds you how precise a time it needs.
  4. Go back to the D1 for the dashas, the nakshatras and the Atmakaraka, then compare.

The calculation uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the mean nodes and Parashara’s rules. Rahu and Ketu, opposite in the sky, would fall in the same D40 sign in a raw calculation: the site keeps Ketu opposite Rahu in every chart.

D40, D45, D12: which chart for family?

The D12 describes your parents themselves and what you receive from them. The D40 reads what your mother’s line passes on; the D45, your father’s, through character and conduct; the D60 goes back to the karma of past lives. Read together, and always brought back to the D1, they show where what you carry comes from. Divisional charts places each one among the twenty charts on the site.

Calculate your chart with the time on your birth certificate, switch to Vedic and open the D40: you will see what your mother’s line passes on to you.

Frequently asked questions

What does Khavedamsha mean?

Khavedamsha means “the fortieth portion”. Amsha means portion; kha, the empty sky, stands for zero and veda, the four Vedas, for four, read from units to tens as in the old texts. Each sign is cut into forty parts of 45 minutes of arc.

What is the D40 chart used for in Vedic astrology?

Parashara gives it for the auspicious and inauspicious effects of life. Tradition reads in it the maternal legacy: what your mother’s line passes on to you, the support as well as the patterns to rework. It is read with the D1, never alone, looking at the Moon, the 4th house and the ruler of its Ascendant.

How do you calculate the D40 chart?

Each sidereal sign is cut into forty parts of 45′. For an odd sign, count the parts from Aries; for an even sign, from Libra. A planet at 8° Gemini is in the 11th part, so it lands in Aquarius in the D40. The site does this calculation for all your planets and for the Ascendant.

Can you read the D40 without an exact birth time?

No. Its Ascendant changes on average every three minutes, and its houses with it: you need the time on your birth certificate. Without a time, the site disables the Vedic option. With an approximate time, only the D40 signs of the slow planets stay reliable.

What is the difference between the D40 and the D45?

The D40 reads the auspicious and inauspicious effects and the legacy of your mother’s line; the D45 reads character, conduct and the paternal legacy. The D45 is even more sensitive to the time: its Ascendant changes in under three minutes on average.

Why is my D40 different in other software?

Most often because of the ayanamsa: a gap of one degree moves every planet by more than a 45′ part. The site calculates with Lahiri. Then come the birth time, to within three minutes, and the place of Ketu, which the site always keeps opposite Rahu.
