D16 Shodashamsha: the chart of vehicles, comfort and material joys

The D16, or Shodashamsha (“the sixteenth part”), is the divisional chart of comfort in Vedic astrology: your vehicles, the ease of your surroundings, the material joys that make you happy and what comes to disturb them. Each sign is cut into sixteen parts. You read it with house 4 and Venus, starting from the birth chart.

What is the D16 Shodashamsha chart?

In Sanskrit, shodasha means “sixteen” and amsha means “part”: the Shodashamsha is the chart of the sixteenths of a sign. Parashara counts it among the sixteen charts of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and assigns it the vehicles, and with them the joys and the frustrations of material comfort. Like every divisional chart, it starts from the D1 Rasi and zooms in on a single area of life.

The word “vehicle” is meant in a broad sense: whatever carries you and makes life easier. The car, of course, but also the comfort of home, beautiful objects, everyday pleasures, the peace you feel when you are at ease where you live. This is the area Jyotish calls sukha, quiet happiness, the happiness of house 4.

Do not mix them up: the Shodashamsha is one chart, the sixteenth part; the Shodashavarga is the set of Parashara’s sixteen charts, which includes the D16.

How is the D16 chart calculated?

Each 30° sign is cut into sixteen parts of 1°52′30″. The count starts from a different sign depending on the nature of the birth sign: from Aries for the movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, the cardinal signs of Western astrology), from Leo for the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), from Sagittarius for the dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). The three starting points are the three fire signs.

Since sixteen is more than twelve, the parts go all the way around the zodiac and then take in four more signs. For the degree, multiply the planet’s degree within its sign by sixteen and remove whole rounds of 30°. Three examples:

  • Venus at 10° Cancer (a movable sign): count from Aries; it is in the sixth part, in Virgo, at 10°.
  • The Moon at 20° Taurus (a fixed sign): count from Leo; it is in the eleventh part, in Gemini, at 20°.
  • Jupiter at 29° Pisces (a dual sign): count from Sagittarius; in the sixteenth part, after a full round, it comes back to Pisces, at 14°.

What should you look at in the D16 chart?

The D16 has its own Ascendant, and its houses, in whole signs, start from it. Here are the landmarks, in the order to read them.

  • The D16 Ascendant and its lord: your relationship with comfort, what puts you at ease or makes you demanding.
  • House 4 and its lord: home, vehicles, everyday ease, inner peace.
  • Venus, the planet of vehicles and pleasures: its sign and house show what does you good and how you enjoy it.
  • The Moon: peace of mind, what soothes you in your surroundings.
  • The planets on house 4 and on the angles: the benefics, such as Jupiter or Venus, add ease; the malefics, such as Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu, show what disturbs your comfort, and therefore where to act.

Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra, exalted in Pisces, debilitated in Virgo. A debilitated Venus in the D16 deprives you of nothing: it points to a pleasure that comes through sorting and simplicity rather than abundance.

An example of a D16 reading

Take an imaginary chart whose D16 has a Gemini Ascendant. Venus is exalted in Pisces, in house 10; Saturn occupies Virgo, in house 4.

Venus exalted on an angle gives a real talent for comfort: a taste for beautiful things, the art of making a place pleasant, the pleasure of travelling. In house 10, this well-being also comes through working life: a well-kept workplace, journeys that bring pleasure.

Saturn in house 4 tempers the picture: comfort that is built slowly, a preference for what lasts over what glitters, a car or a home interior kept for a long time. Saturn slows things down to make them last: this person finds peace in chosen simplicity, not in accumulation.

With Rahu in house 4, the reading would change: a craving for novelty, for changing car or decor without ever feeling satisfied. Rahu brings desires in bursts: deciding what is enough becomes the antidote.

What is the difference between the D16 and the D4?

The D4 Chaturthamsha also speaks of home, but from the angle of foundations: fortune, property, what you own. The D16 speaks of enjoyment: the comfort you draw from it, the pleasure of living there, the ease of getting around. You can have a strong D4 and a more demanding D16, owning much and enjoying little; the reverse exists too, the art of living well with little.

Wealth itself is read elsewhere, in the D2 Hora, the chart of what you accumulate. The D16 does not speak of sums: it speaks of well-being.

How to read the D16 with the D1, the dashas and the Western chart

Always start with the birth chart: house 4, its lord and Venus in the D1 set out the promise, and the D16 says how it is lived. A Venus strong in both charts points to comfort that comes easily; strong in the D1 and fragile in the D16, it invites you to learn to enjoy what you have.

The Vimshottari dashas give the timing: the period of Venus or of the lord of house 4 often brings these matters to the foreground, whether it is moving house, settling down or changing car. Your Western chart adds its confirmation: house 4 and Venus also speak of home and pleasure there. This is the method described in crossing the charts: when several charts say the same thing, the reading holds.

How accurate does your birth time need to be for the D16?

The D16 Ascendant changes sign on average every seven and a half minutes, sixteen times faster than the D1 Ascendant. The planets stay well placed with an approximate time: the Sun takes almost two days to cross one part. The Moon, however, changes part in a little over three hours.

To read the houses of the D16, and above all its house 4, you therefore need a birth time reliable to within a few minutes. The full version of your birth certificate is the best source. If your time is rounded, read Venus and the Moon in their signs first, and the chart’s Ascendant with caution.

How to open your D16 chart on the site

The site calculates the D16 in the sidereal zodiac, with the Lahiri ayanamsa and Parashara’s rule of division. Without a birth time, the Vedic view stays switched off: the Ascendant and the houses depend on it.

  1. Calculate your birth chart with your date, time and place of birth.
  2. At the wheel, choose Vedic (sidereal) instead of Tropical (Western): the D1 Rasi opens.
  3. In the list of charts, choose D16: the wheel, the planets’ positions (sign, degree, house) and the line that gives the chart’s meaning all change.
  4. Find the D16 Ascendant, its house 4, Venus and the Moon, then compare them with the D1.

Rahu and Ketu are calculated as mean nodes, with Ketu always opposite Rahu, including in the D16. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in the background: classical Vedic astrology reads only the seven visible planets and the nodes.

Calculate your chart with the exact time, switch to Vedic and choose the D16: your comfort has its own chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is the D16 chart in Vedic astrology?

The D16, or Shodashamsha, is the divisional chart of vehicles, comfort and material joys. Each sign is divided into sixteen parts of 1°52′30″. You read house 4, its lord, Venus and the Moon to understand what makes life pleasant for you and what disturbs it.

How do you calculate a planet’s D16 position?

Find which 1°52′30″ slice it sits in, then count that many signs from Aries if its sign is movable, from Leo if it is fixed, from Sagittarius if it is dual. Venus at 10° Cancer is in the sixth part, counted from Aries: it moves to Virgo.

Is the D16 chart only about cars?

No. Vehicles are the first meaning Parashara gives it, but the D16 describes comfort more broadly: home, beautiful objects, everyday pleasures and the peace you feel where you live. It is the happiness of house 4, seen through a magnifying glass.

Which planet should you look at first in the D16?

Venus, the planet of vehicles and pleasures. Then the lord of house 4 of the D16, and the Moon for inner peace. A Venus exalted in Pisces, or at home in Taurus or Libra, on an angle of the chart, brings ease; in Virgo, it invites you to favour simplicity.

How accurate does the birth time need to be for the D16?

The D16 Ascendant changes sign about every seven and a half minutes. To read its houses, you need a birth time reliable to within a few minutes. The planets, apart from the Moon, stay well placed even with an approximate time.

Where can I see my D16 chart on the site?

Calculate your chart with the exact time, then, at the wheel, choose Vedic (sidereal): the D1 opens. In the list of divisional charts, choose D16. The wheel, the positions and the line that gives the chart’s meaning switch to the D16.
