D24 Siddhamsha: what the chart of education says about your studies
The D24, called Chaturvimshamsha (“the twenty-fourth part”) or Siddhamsha (“the part of accomplishment”), is the divisional chart Vedic astrology devotes to education: the way you learn, the studies that suit you, the knowledge you keep. It is read through Mercury, Jupiter and the 4th, 5th and 9th houses. The site calculates it once your birth time is reliable to within a few minutes.
What is the D24 chart in Vedic astrology?
The name Chaturvimshamsha comes from the Sanskrit chaturvimshati, “twenty-four”: each sign is cut into twenty-four parts. Its other name, Siddhamsha, comes from siddha, “accomplished”, “mastered”. Parashara lists it among the sixteen divisional charts of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and gives it vidya, knowledge: what you learn, and who you become by learning.
The D24 does not stop at diplomas. It describes the way you learn (by listening, by reading, by doing), the subjects that come easily and those that take effort, the teachers who leave their mark, going back to study, knowledge acquired on your own. Where the D1 says who you are, the D24 says what your mind does with what it receives.
How is the D24 calculated?
Each 30° sign is cut into twenty-four parts of 1°15′, using sidereal positions corrected by the Lahiri ayanamsa (see tropical or sidereal). You then move forward one sign with each part.
Twenty-four parts go twice around the zodiac. The two starting points are the signs of the two luminaries: Leo, the sign of the Sun, and Cancer, the sign of the Moon.
- Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius): the count starts from Leo.
- Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces): the count starts from Cancer.
Two examples. Mercury at 3° Virgo: Virgo is even, so you count from Cancer; 3° falls in the third part (from 2°30′ to 3°45′), that is Cancer, Leo, Virgo. Mercury stays in Virgo in the D24, at 12° (3 × 24 = 72, modulo 30). A planet at 10°30′ Gemini, an odd sign, falls in the ninth part, counted from Leo: it is in Aries, at 12°.
What to look at in the D24: Mercury, Jupiter, the 4th, 5th and 9th houses
Start with the D24 Ascendant and its ruler, which set the overall tone of your relationship with knowledge. Then the two planets of knowledge and the three houses of study.
- Mercury, the analytical mind: language, writing, numbers, logic, the speed of learning. Strong in the D24 (in Gemini or Virgo, its own signs), it learns fast and remembers well.
- Jupiter, knowledge that carries meaning: long studies, philosophy, law, teaching, the teacher. Strong (in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer), it gives knowledge that is passed on.
- The 4th house: basic education, school, the foundations, the calm the mind needs in order to study.
- The 5th house: intelligence itself (buddhi), understanding, memory, the creativity of the mind.
- The 9th house: higher studies, the teacher, wisdom, studying far from home.
The other planets describe the subject and the style. Saturn gives method and knowledge that comes late but lasts: it slows things down so they hold. Mars pushes toward technique and hands-on skill, Venus toward the arts, the Moon learns through emotion and memory. Rahu opens paths that branch off, often toward foreign lands or new technologies; Ketu digs into a narrow specialty, research, a gift that seems innate.
Crossing the D24 with the D1, the D10 and the karakas
A brilliant D24 is not enough on its own, and a quiet D24 rules nothing out: it is read with the rest. First look at the 4th, 5th and 9th houses of the D1 and the strength of Mercury and Jupiter in the mother chart. If both charts say the same thing, the signature is solid.
Among the Jaimini karakas, the Matrikaraka carries the mother and education: its placement and strength complete the D24. The D10 Dashamsha, the chart of career, then shows what your studies become in your working life: the D24 says what you learn, the D10 what you do with it in the world.
Your Western chart adds a third view: Mercury, the 3rd house of early learning and the 9th house of higher studies. The Vimshottari dashas give the timing: a period of Mercury, of Jupiter or of the ruler of the D24 Ascendant often activates what the chart promises, a return to study, a training course. This is the method described in crossing the charts.
Example: how to read a D24 chart
Take an imaginary D24 with a Gemini Ascendant: Mercury on the Ascendant, in its own sign; Saturn in the 4th house, in Virgo; Jupiter in the 9th house, in Aquarius; Rahu in the 5th house, in Libra, with Ketu opposite in the 11th house, in Aries. Here is the reading, in the order the site recommends.
- The verdict: a quick mind that learns through words, languages and writing, with school foundations that take effort and higher studies that take an original turn.
- The signatures: Mercury on the Ascendant makes knowledge part of identity; Saturn in the 4th makes school demanding, slow at first, but what is learned stays; Jupiter in the 9th, in Aquarius, opens long studies off the beaten track; Rahu in the 5th multiplies interests.
- The timing: the period of Mercury, ruler of the D24 Ascendant, or that of Jupiter opens the doors to study; Saturn’s period consolidates.
- The confirmations: a strong Mercury in the D1, a well-placed Matrikaraka, a D10 that speaks of writing or teaching confirm the reading.
- The levers: written notes, a fixed timetable, one subject explored in depth before the next. Rahu sends ideas in bursts: order is your antidote.
How accurate does your birth time need to be for the D24?
The Ascendant changes sign every two hours on average; in the D24, which divides the sign by twenty-four, it changes roughly every five minutes, faster or slower depending on the sign. A time noted as “around 8 am” is therefore not enough to trust the Ascendant and the houses of the D24.
Planets are steadier: the Moon changes D24 part in about two hours, while the others stay in theirs for several hours at least, often several days. With an uncertain time, read the signs of the planets and treat the Ascendant as a hypothesis. In France, the full copy of the birth record shows the exact time; elsewhere, look for the long-form birth certificate.
To test an uncertain time, calculate your chart at the recorded time, then five minutes before and five minutes after. If the D24 Ascendant stays the same, rely on it; if it changes, keep both readings in mind, as you would for the Western rising sign.
How to see your D24 on the site
The D24 opens from your chart’s page; the site shows the birth time accuracy each chart requires.
- Calculate your birth chart with your exact birth time: without a time, the Vedic view stays switched off.
- At the wheel, choose “Vedic (sidereal)”: the D1, the mother chart, opens.
- In the list of charts, choose D24: the wheel, the positions and the line that gives the chart’s meaning change.
- Go back to the D1 for the karakas and your dashas, then cross with the D10.
The calculation follows Parashara: Lahiri ayanamsa, whole sign houses from the D24 Ascendant, Rahu and Ketu always facing each other; Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in the background. A question about your studies asked in Your chart answers you draws on the D24, and the answer says when it speaks in Vedic terms.
Calculate your chart with the exact time, choose “Vedic”, then the D24: Mercury, Jupiter and the 4th, 5th and 9th houses show you how your mind learns best.
