D5 Panchamsha: the Vedic chart of fame and merit

The D5, or Panchamsha (also spelled Panchamsa, “the fifth part”), is the divisional chart that reads fame, authority, power and the merit carried over from past lives, purva punya. It is not one of Parashara’s sixteen charts: other traditions use it, and it is read to confirm the D1 and the D10, never on its own.

What is the D5 Panchamsha?

Panchamsha comes from the Sanskrit pancha, “five”, and amsha, “part”: each sign is cut into five. The chart speaks of what raises you in the eyes of others: fame, authority, the power to lead a group, and the merit that opens doors without anyone quite knowing why.

That merit has a name: purva punya, “earlier merit”, what the soul brings from its past lives. In the Vedic birth chart, it lives in the 5th house, the house of intelligence, creativity and talents that seem inborn. The D5, the chart of the number five, extends it: it shows how that capital turns into recognition.

Is the D5 one of Parashara’s sixteen charts?

No, and it is worth saying plainly. In the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Parashara describes sixteen divisional charts, the Shodashavarga: D1, D2, D3, D4, D7, D9, D10, D12, D16, D20, D24, D27, D30, D40, D45 and D60. The D5 is not among them, any more than the D6, the D8 or the D11. Other traditions use it, and the site calculates it among its twenty divisional charts.

That origin sets its place: the D5 is a chart of confirmation, less classical than Parashara’s. It refines a promise the D1 and the D10 already carry; it does not invent one. A brilliant D5 in a chart where nothing else speaks of recognition points to authority within a close circle, a quiet merit, rather than to celebrity.

How is the D5 chart calculated?

Each 30° sign is split into five parts of 6°. Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) and even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) do not follow the same sequence:

  • Odd signs, from the first part to the fifth: Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius, Gemini, Libra.
  • Even signs, from the first part to the fifth: Taurus, Virgo, Pisces, Capricorn, Scorpio.

A planet’s D5 degree is its degree within the sign multiplied by five, minus 30 as many times as needed. Other ways of dividing the sign into five exist depending on the school; the site follows this one, in sidereal degrees (see the ayanamsa).

Why Cancer and Leo are missing from the D5

These ten signs are those of Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, in that order for odd signs and in reverse order for even ones. Cancer and Leo, the signs of the Moon and the Sun, receive no part: the D5 Ascendant never falls there, and the Sun and the Moon never find their own sign in this chart.

So these two lights are judged by their exaltation (the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Taurus), their debilitation (the Sun in Libra, the Moon in Scorpio) and friendly signs. It is a feature worth knowing before reading the chart: a Sun with no own sign in the D5 is not a weakened Sun.

What do you look at in the D5?

The houses of the D5 are counted as whole signs from its Ascendant. Look first at:

  • The D5 Ascendant and its lord: the way you exercise authority, the image that goes before you.
  • The Sun, the natural significator of power and rank: its dignity shows how easily people grant you a place.
  • Jupiter, significator of the 5th house and of merit: what is granted to you.
  • The Moon, the favour of the public, popularity.
  • The lords of the D1’s 5th and 10th houses, purva punya and status: their strength in the D5 confirms or nuances the birth chart’s promise.

A planet strong in the D5 lends shine to whatever it touches; a weak planet takes nothing away, it describes recognition that is built rather than handed over. Saturn makes rank wait, but the rank it gives lasts; Rahu brings sudden visibility: consistency in what you show is your antidote.

How to read the D5 with the 5th house of the D1

In the D1 Rasi, the 5th house holds purva punya, the 10th house status, the 9th house luck and dharma. The D5 is read after them: it does not create a promise, it shows how the D1’s promise takes shape and how far it is seen.

For the career itself, the D10 Dashamsha remains the reference chart; for what the soul comes to ripen, the D9 Navamsha. The D5 adds the share of radiance your merit earns you. Your Western chart brings one more confirmation, through the 10th house and the Sun: that is how the site works, crossing the charts before concluding.

An example D5 reading

Take two people with an Aries Ascendant in the D1, born a little over three weeks apart, both with the Sun in Leo, their 5th house: there the Sun is lord of the house of purva punya, its occupant, and in its own sign. The promise is strong.

For the first, the Sun is at 3° Leo: the first part of an odd sign, Aries, at 15°. In the D5, it is exalted. For the second, it is at 27° Leo: the fifth part, Libra, at 15° as well. In the D5, it is in its sign of debilitation.

For the first, the D5 confirms the D1: authority comes naturally, through initiative, and merit shows early. For the second, the D1 keeps all its strength; the D5 says recognition comes through others, through alliance, diplomacy, a shared cause. The lever is clear: shine by joining forces rather than by standing alone. The Sun period in the Vimshottari dashas is when this question of visibility comes up most clearly.

How accurate does the birth time need to be for the D5?

The D5 Ascendant changes sign every twenty-four minutes on average, five times faster than the D1’s, a little more or less depending on the signs rising. To read its houses, you need a reliable time: ten minutes can already be enough to move it.

Planets are far more stable: even the Moon takes ten to twelve hours to cross a 6° part. With an approximate time, read mainly the planets’ signs and dignities, starting with the Sun and Jupiter, rather than the houses.

Without a birth time, the site does not calculate the Vedic charts. In France, the full copy of the birth record shows the time; a rounded time can be put to the test by calculating the chart again a few minutes before and after, to see whether the D5 Ascendant moves.

How to see your D5 on the site

The D5 is calculated in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses and mean nodes, Ketu always opposite Rahu. It opens in four steps:

  1. Calculate your birth chart with your exact time of birth.
  2. At the wheel, choose Vedic (sidereal): the D1 Rasi opens.
  3. In the list of charts, choose D5.
  4. The wheel, the positions (sign, degree, house) and the line that gives the chart’s meaning change: you are reading your Panchamsha.

Your D5 is read next to your birth chart and your D10: calculate your chart with the exact time, choose Vedic, then D5 in the list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the D5 Panchamsha in Vedic astrology?

It is the divisional chart that cuts each sign into five parts of 6°. It reads fame, authority, power and purva punya, the merit carried over from past lives, linked to the 5th house. It is read to confirm the D1 and the D10, never on its own.

Is the D5 one of Parashara’s charts?

No. Parashara describes sixteen divisional charts in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, and the D5 is not among them. Other traditions use it. That is why it is read in support of a promise already visible in the D1 and the D10.

How is the D5 Panchamsa chart calculated?

Each sign is cut into five parts of 6°. In an odd sign, they lead to Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius, Gemini and then Libra; in an even sign, to Taurus, Virgo, Pisces, Capricorn and then Scorpio. The D5 degree is the degree within the sign multiplied by five, minus 30 as many times as needed.

Why do Cancer and Leo never appear in the D5?

Because the five parts lead to the signs of Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus. Cancer and Leo, the signs of the Moon and the Sun, receive no part: the Sun and the Moon are judged there by their exaltation, their debilitation and friendly signs, never by their own sign.

Can the D5 predict fame?

Not on its own. It shows the share of radiance your merit earns you, and the way recognition reaches you. If the D1 and the D10 promise a public life, a strong D5 confirms it; otherwise, it speaks of authority within your circle, of a talent recognised by the people who matter to you.

What birth time do you need for the D5?

A time that is reliable to within a few minutes: the D5 Ascendant changes sign every twenty-four minutes on average. The planets’ signs hold better, even with an approximate time. Without a birth time, the site does not calculate the Vedic charts.
