Nakshatra
Punarvasu nakshatra: the return of the light
Punarvasu is the seventh nakshatra: it runs from 20° Gemini to 3°20′ Cancer in the sidereal zodiac. Its name means “the good that returns”. Ruled by Jupiter and presided over by Aditi, the boundless mother, it gives the art of starting again, of coming home and of drawing the bow once more. A Moon in Punarvasu opens life in the Jupiter mahadasha.
Punarvasu nakshatra meaning
In Sanskrit, punar means “again” and vasu means “good”, “bright”, “rich”: Punarvasu is the good that comes back. The seventh of the 27 nakshatras, it covers 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac, from 20° Gemini to 3°20′ Cancer: its first three padas lie in Gemini, the sign of Mercury, the fourth in Cancer, the sign of the Moon.
In the sky, it is marked by Castor and Pollux, the two bright stars of Gemini. It comes right after Ardra, the storm nakshatra ruled by Rudra: tradition reads this passage as fair weather returning after the tempest. What was shaken up in Ardra gathers itself and finds its place again in Punarvasu.
Punarvasu symbol, deity and nature
Its symbol is the quiver, the case that holds the arrows, sometimes shown with the bow. An arrow flies, the archer fetches it, puts it back and can shoot again: Punarvasu knows how to go out into the world and return to its base without losing any of its strength.
Its deity is Aditi, mother of the gods, whose name means “boundless”, “unbound”. She gives Punarvasu space: room to breathe, to forgive, to set off again. The nakshatra belongs to the deva gana, the divine temperament, gentle and kind; its nature is movable (chara), favourable to departures, journeys and changes of course. Its animal (yoni) is the cat, which it shares with Ashlesha.
Jupiter, ruler of Punarvasu
Punarvasu is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of wisdom, faith and growth. It brings a natural confidence: the sense that tomorrow can be better, and the wish to pass on what has been understood. In Gemini, this Jupiter thinks, questions and teaches; in the Cancer pada, it protects and nourishes, since Cancer is the sign where Jupiter is exalted.
The ruler also sets the calendar: a birth with the Moon in Punarvasu begins in the Jupiter mahadasha, a 16-year period, already under way in proportion to the distance the Moon has covered. An example: a Moon at 25° Gemini has travelled 5° of Punarvasu’s 13°20′, that is 37.5%; 62.5% of the 16 years remain, so 10 years of Jupiter to live after birth. The dasha calculator works this out to the day.
Punarvasu qualities and challenges
Punarvasu gives resilience: falling, getting up, trying again without bitterness. You often find an open, generous mind that rarely holds a grudge, a taste for teaching, travel and homecomings, a good humour that reassures others. It is content with little and knows how to do a great deal with what it has.
Its challenges are the other side of these gifts, and each one hides a lever:
- Starting over without finishing: the arrow flies again before it has hit the target. The lever: decide what deserves another try and what can stay in the quiver.
- Scattering in the three Gemini padas, with a thousand leads open at once. The lever: one single question per season, explored to the end.
- Trust given too quickly, because Jupiter readily believes the best. The lever: keep the generosity and reread commitments before signing.
- Restlessness from the movable nature. The lever: a fixed point, a place or a habit, to come back to every day.
Moon in Punarvasu: your Janma nakshatra
When the Moon is in Punarvasu, it is your Janma nakshatra, the birth star: the one that describes the mind and the inner need. That need is space: being able to leave, to think, to change your mind, then to come back to a home that waits for you. Moods return quickly to balance; sorrow is real, but it does not settle in.
In the first three padas, in Gemini, this Moon needs to understand what it feels and to put it into words; in the fourth, in Cancer, its own sign, it needs to care for others and to be surrounded. Its lever: build an inner home, a steady habit, so that freedom does not turn into flight.
Punarvasu Ascendant
An Ascendant between 20° Gemini and 3°20′ Cancer sidereal places Punarvasu at the door of the chart. The visible temperament is open, curious, welcoming, often youthful in manner; the first reflex, after a setback, is to try again another way. Jupiter becomes a key planet: its house shows where your energy goes of its own accord, alongside the chart ruler, Mercury or the Moon depending on the sign.
Since the Ascendant crosses a nakshatra in a little under an hour on average, the birth time has to be precise: a few minutes are enough to move from Ardra to Punarvasu, or from Punarvasu to Pushya.
The four padas of Punarvasu
Each pada spans 3°20′ and corresponds to a sign of the Navamsha, the D9, the chart of inner maturity and of partnership. Those of Punarvasu follow the signs from Aries to Cancer:
- Pada 1 (20°–23°20′ Gemini), Aries in the D9: the brave fresh start, initiative, the urge to be first to set off again.
- Pada 2 (23°20′–26°40′ Gemini), Taurus in the D9: making what is reborn last, building resources, savouring.
- Pada 3 (26°40′–30° Gemini), Gemini in the D9: thought, writing, exchange; a planet here is vargottama, in the same sign in the D1 and the D9, which strengthens it.
- Pada 4 (0°–3°20′ Cancer), Cancer in the D9: home, protection, passing things on; vargottama as well. Jupiter placed here is in its own nakshatra, in its sign of exaltation and vargottama: a very strong configuration.
How do I know if I am Punarvasu?
A person is said to “be” Punarvasu when their Moon sits there; the Ascendant and the planets placed in it count too. It is read in the sidereal zodiac, shifted by about 24° from the Western one: these are two readings of the sky (tropical or sidereal), and your Western Moon sign is not enough to find it.
- Open the nakshatra calculator and enter your date, exact time and place of birth.
- Read the Moon’s nakshatra and pada first: if it is Punarvasu, the result also gives its ruler, Jupiter, and its deity, Aditi, with a link to their pages.
- Then look at the nakshatra of the Ascendant, and at that of each planet, from the Sun to Saturn, Rahu and Ketu included.
- To find the dates of your Jupiter mahadasha, move on to the dasha calculator with the same details.
No planet in Punarvasu? Its spirit still reaches you every month, when the Moon crosses it for about a day: a good moment to pick up what you had left along the way.
Enter your exact time of birth: the calculator gives the nakshatra and pada of your Moon, your Ascendant and each planet, and tells you whether Punarvasu is among them.
