Pushya nakshatra: the one who nourishes and helps things grow

Pushya is the eighth nakshatra, from 3°20′ to 16°40′ Cancer sidereal, lying wholly in the sign of the Moon. Its name means “the one who nourishes”. Ruled by Saturn and presided over by Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, it gives lasting care and a taste for teaching and protecting. Tradition holds it to be one of the most favourable nakshatras for beginnings.

Pushya nakshatra meaning

Pushya comes from a Sanskrit root meaning “to nourish”, “to make prosper”: it is the one who nourishes. Its old name, Tishya, means “the auspicious one”. The eighth of the 27 nakshatras, it occupies 3°20′ to 16°40′ Cancer in the sidereal zodiac, between Punarvasu and Ashlesha.

Its stars are faint: a few points in the constellation of Cancer, around the Beehive cluster. Pushya does not shine, it supports. That is its whole character: a strength that works quietly, like sap in a stem or milk coming in.

Pushya symbol and deity

Its symbol is the cow’s udder, the source of the milk that feeds the calf and the household alike; it is sometimes shown as a flower. The image says it all: giving what makes others grow, steadily, without counting the returns.

Its deity is Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, master of sacred speech and sound counsel. He gives Pushya the love of learning and passing on, a sense of ritual and of keeping one’s word. The nakshatra belongs to the deva gana, the divine temperament; its nature is light and swift (kshipra), favourable to anything that starts: a course of study, an apprenticeship, a project. Its animal (yoni) is the sheep, which it shares with Krittika.

Saturn, ruler of Pushya

Pushya is ruled by Saturn, the planet of time, duty and patience. In the Moon’s sign, it turns emotion into commitment: care for others is not a passing impulse but something done every day, for a long time. Saturn gives care time, and care that takes its time bears fruit that stays.

A birth with the Moon in Pushya opens life in the Saturn mahadasha, which lasts 19 years and is already under way in proportion to the distance the Moon has covered. With a Moon at 10° Cancer, exactly in the middle of Pushya, half the period has gone: 9 years and 6 months of Saturn remain after birth. The dasha calculator gives these dates and the sub-periods that follow.

Pushya also holds a famous degree: 5° Cancer, the deepest exaltation of Jupiter. Saturn as ruler, Jupiter exalted, Brihaspati as deity: structure and wisdom meet here.

Pushya qualities and challenges: the most auspicious nakshatra

In the art of choosing the moment, muhurta, Pushya is among the most sought-after nakshatras for beginnings: the start of a course, an initiation, the opening of a workshop. When the Moon crosses it on a Thursday, Jupiter’s day, tradition speaks of Guru Pushya; on a Sunday, of Ravi Pushya. Those days are said to carry whatever is sown on them.

In a birth chart, Pushya gives reliability: people can count on it. A sense of duty, loyalty, a gift for teaching and advising, a quiet faith, the ability to build a frame in which others grow. Its challenges come from that same gift, and each one turns into a lever:

  • Giving until you forget yourself: the udder runs dry if the cow does not eat. The lever: feed yourself first, without guilt, so you can keep giving for a long time.
  • The rule stronger than life, because Saturn loves structure. The lever: keep the rule when it helps, change it when it stifles.
  • Worrying about loved ones. The lever: turn the anxiety into a concrete gesture, a call, a meal, a piece of advice.
  • Protecting to the point of preventing. The lever: let others try, get it wrong and learn, as a good teacher does.

Moon in Pushya: a Moon at home

In Cancer, the Moon is in its own sign, and Pushya offers it a nakshatra that resembles it. As a Janma nakshatra, Pushya gives a sensitivity turned towards others, the need to be useful and to know that loved ones are well. Emotions run deep but are kept in order by Saturn: they show through actions more than words.

This Moon needs a structure, habits and reliable bonds; it calms down by being of service. Its lever: say what it feels before duty covers everything, and accept, in turn, to be nourished.

Pushya Ascendant

An Ascendant between 3°20′ and 16°40′ Cancer sidereal makes Pushya the door of the chart. The presence is reassuring: serious, attentive, often more mature than its years. Two planets become essential: the Moon, chart ruler of a Cancer Ascendant, and Saturn, ruler of the nakshatra. Their houses show where your energy is most readily spent: where you protect, where you build.

The Ascendant crosses Pushya in a little under an hour; a rounded birth time can slide it towards Punarvasu or towards Ashlesha, and change the whole reading.

The four padas of Pushya

The four padas of 3°20′ each give a sign of the Navamsha, the D9, the chart of inner maturity and partnership. For Pushya, they run from Leo to Scorpio:

  • Pada 1 (3°20′–6°40′ Cancer), Leo in the D9: generosity that shows, the protector who takes the lead; this is where Jupiter’s exaltation falls, at 5° Cancer.
  • Pada 2 (6°40′–10° Cancer), Virgo in the D9: care in the details, practical service, method.
  • Pada 3 (10°–13°20′ Cancer), Libra in the D9: nourishing relationships, arbitrating, seeking the right balance between everyone’s needs.
  • Pada 4 (13°20′–16°40′ Cancer), Scorpio in the D9: depth, research, protecting what is intimate or hidden.

Frequently asked questions

What does Pushya mean?

Pushya comes from a Sanskrit root meaning to nourish, to make prosper: it is the one who nourishes. Its old name, Tishya, means the auspicious one. Its symbol, the cow’s udder, says the same thing: giving what makes others grow.

What is the ruling planet of Pushya?

Saturn. A Moon in Pushya therefore begins life in the Saturn mahadasha, which lasts 19 years and is already under way at birth according to the distance the Moon has covered in the nakshatra. Its deity is Brihaspati, teacher of the gods.

Why is Pushya so auspicious?

It brings together Saturn as ruler, Brihaspati as deity and Jupiter’s deepest exaltation, at 5° Cancer. The muhurta tradition seeks it out to begin a course of study or a project, especially on a Thursday (Guru Pushya) or a Sunday (Ravi Pushya).

Which sign is Pushya in?

Entirely in sidereal Cancer, from 3°20′ to 16°40′. It is the Moon’s sign: a Moon in Pushya is therefore in its own sign, and any planet in Pushya has the Moon as its sign ruler and Saturn as its nakshatra ruler.

Which pada of Pushya holds Jupiter’s exaltation?

The first, from 3°20′ to 6°40′ Cancer, which gives Leo in the D9: Jupiter’s deepest exaltation falls at 5° Cancer. A Jupiter at that degree is exalted in the D1 and placed in Leo in the Navamsha.

Is the Moon in Pushya a good placement?

It is a strong Moon: in its own sign, in a kind deva nakshatra. It gives loyalty and a sense of care. Its challenge is carrying too much; its lever, accepting support in turn. The rest of the chart always shades the reading.
