Mahadasha
Saturn mahadasha: nineteen years to build what lasts
The Saturn mahadasha lasts 19 years, the second longest in the Vimshottari, between Jupiter’s period and Mercury’s. Its bad reputation is undeserved: Saturn is the slow architect of the chart. He asks for effort, method and patience, and what you build during his period holds for a long time. His house, his rulerships and his dignity in the D1 and the D9 show where the building site is.
How long does the Saturn mahadasha last?
Nineteen years: only Venus’s period, twenty years, is longer in the Vimshottari. Saturn takes over from the sixteen years of Jupiter and then hands on to Mercury for seventeen years. The sequence has its logic: Jupiter makes things grow, Saturn gives them a form, Mercury sets them in motion.
His three nakshatras, Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada, all stretch from 3°20′ to 16°40′ of a water sign: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. A birth Moon in one of them opens life in Saturn’s period, already under way.
What does the Saturn mahadasha mean?
Saturn is called Shani, or Shanaishchara, “the one who moves slowly”: he takes nearly thirty years to go round the zodiac. In myth, he is the son of the Sun and of Chhaya, “the shadow”. His period puts the long run in the spotlight: work, responsibility, discipline, maturity, service, elders, everything that can only be gained by lasting.
In practice, these nineteen years often see a career built step by step, a family responsibility taken on, a house built or set back on its feet, a skill that becomes mastery. Saturn gives little at once and a great deal over time. To place this period among the other systems of time, see what is a dasha.
Saturn mahadasha: effects by house
Saturn’s house in the D1, in whole signs from the Ascendant, shows where the building site is. Tradition likes him in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, the upachaya houses, “those that grow” with time and effort: courage, daily work, career and gains rise there slowly but surely. In the 4th, home calls for groundwork; in the 7th, partnership calls for maturity; in the 12th, foreign lands or retreat become a place of work.
Saturn also aspects the houses three, seven and ten signs away from him (his drishtis, his glances): they receive his discipline throughout these nineteen years.
His rulerships count just as much. For a Libra Ascendant, he rules Capricorn and Aquarius, the 4th and 5th houses: an angle and a trine, which makes him the yogakaraka, the most supportive planet of the chart (he is for a Taurus Ascendant too). His period then revolves around home, land, studies and children, and often ranks among the best of a lifetime.
Exalted, in own sign or debilitated Saturn: dignity in the D1 and the D9
Saturn is at home in Capricorn and Aquarius, exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries. Exalted, he gives a keen sense of justice and balance, and a period in which effort is recognised. In Aries, impatience runs into slowness: the lever comes down to one word, method, which turns raw drive into results.
The D9 tells you whether the promise holds: a Saturn well placed in the Navamsha, or vargottama (in the same sign in the D1 and the D9), gives a period of remarkable steadiness. For career, open the D10, the chart of profession: that is often where Saturn’s period shows its true face.
The 9 antardashas of the Saturn mahadasha
The nineteen years divide into nine sub-periods, in the order of the cycle starting from Saturn himself. Their lengths, and what each one stages:
- Saturn–Saturn, 3 years and 3 days: the foundations. What you decide here shapes the rest of the period.
- Saturn–Mercury, 2 years, 8 months and 9 days: two natural friends. Method, studies, writing, trade: work becomes know-how.
- Saturn–Ketu, 1 year, 1 month and 9 days: sobriety. Letting go of a role, simplifying, deepening an inner practice.
- Saturn–Venus, 3 years and 2 months: another friendship. A commitment that lasts, an art that becomes a trade, a well-earned comfort.
- Saturn–Sun, 11 months and 12 days: the son and the father of the myth meet again. The Sun wants to shine, Saturn wants proof: competence reconciles the two in the face of hierarchy.
- Saturn–Moon, 1 year and 7 months: the heart under discipline. Home, the mother, emotions need care; a gentle routine and faithful bonds support the Moon.
- Saturn–Mars, 1 year, 1 month and 9 days: brake and accelerator. The impatience of Mars is channelled into a concrete project and regular physical effort.
- Saturn–Rahu, 2 years, 10 months and 6 days: ambition meets structure. Technology, foreign lands, unusual projects: one written plan is worth more than ten hunches.
- Saturn–Jupiter, 2 years, 6 months and 12 days: the harvest. Wisdom gained is passed on, effort finds its meaning, and Mercury gets ready.
When does the Saturn mahadasha start and end?
It depends on the nakshatra of your Moon. In a Saturn nakshatra, you are born in his period; elsewhere, it begins at the end of Jupiter’s sixteen years. The last months of one great period and the first months of the next form the dasha sandhi, the junction: the climate changes, often noticeably. Two worked examples:
- A Moon at 10° sidereal Scorpio sits in the middle of Anuradha: 9 years and 6 months of Saturn remain at birth, then Mercury runs from 9 years and 6 months to 26 years and 6 months.
- A Moon at 25° Aquarius has covered 37.5% of Purva Bhadrapada, a Jupiter nakshatra: 10 years of Jupiter remain, then Saturn runs from age 10 to 29, the years in which you build yourself.
Is the Saturn mahadasha difficult?
It is demanding, rarely barren. Its points of vigilance are well known: slowness that discourages, the weight of responsibilities, the temptation to isolate yourself, doubt about your own worth, rigidity. None of them is a fate, and each one points to a lever.
Saturn’s levers are simple and powerful: a routine you keep, a long-term project broken into stages, work done well without waiting for applause, service, listening to elders, commitments sized to what you can carry. You do not force Saturn, you adopt his pace; you then leave his period with a footing that nothing takes away.
How do I know if I am in my Saturn mahadasha?
The site calculates your Vimshottari from the exact position of your Moon. One hour of error in the birth time can shift the dates by several months: enter the most precise time you have.
- Enter your date, time and place of birth in the dasha calculator.
- The current period appears with its dates: if it is Saturn’s, the antardasha tells you which scene you are living.
