Mahadasha
Mars Mahadasha: seven years to act, dare and build
The Mars mahadasha, or Mangala dasha, lasts 7 years in the Vimshottari. It brings to the fore energy, courage, initiative, competition, land and property, brothers and sisters. It follows the 10 years of the Moon and paves the way for the 18 years of Rahu. Well placed, Mars gives a period of achievements; under more tension, a period in which you learn to steer your strength.
How long does the Mars mahadasha last?
The Mars mahadasha lasts 7 years, as long as Ketu’s, within the 120-year cycle of the Vimshottari. It takes over from the ten more inward years of the Moon, and prepares the eighteen years of Rahu, turned towards ambition and the new. Mars is the hinge: after feeling comes doing.
It opens the life of those whose natal Moon is in one of the three nakshatras of Mars: Mrigashira, Chitra or Dhanishtha. These children start life in a lively climate: plenty of energy, curiosity, and the urge to do things by themselves.
Mangala dasha: what Mars sets in motion
Mars, Mangala (“the auspicious one”) or Kuja (“born of the Earth”), is the natural significator of courage, physical energy and the will to act. It rules brothers and sisters, land and real estate (it is called bhumi karaka, the significator of land), technical skill, sport, competition, and every trade in which you cut, build or defend.
These seven years are made for building projects: starting a business, renovating a house, buying a plot of land, training for a goal, defending a cause. Mars likes measurable challenges: the period rewards those who set themselves a clear aim and stick to it.
Mars by house: where the energy goes
The house of Mars, counted in whole signs from the Ascendant, shows the ground of the period. Mars rules two signs, Aries and Scorpio: the houses that hold them are its other stages. It also aspects the 4th, 7th and 8th houses from itself (its aspects, drishti), which receive its energy.
- In the 3rd house: courage, initiative, brothers and sisters, words that commit you.
- In the 4th house: the house, land, a project at home.
- In the 6th house: competition, daily work, the art of overcoming obstacles.
- In the 10th house, where Mars has its directional strength (dig bala): a career of action, moving forward through determination.
- In the 11th house: ambitions reached through perseverance, active allies.
- Leo Ascendant: Mars rules the 4th house (Scorpio) and the 9th (Aries), an angular house and a trine house. It becomes yogakaraka, the most favourable planet in the chart, and its period often counts among the most fruitful. It is one for the Cancer Ascendant too.
Mars exalted, in its own sign or debilitated: its dignity in the D1 and the D9
Mars is exalted in Capricorn (strongest at 28°), in its own sign in Aries and Scorpio, debilitated in Cancer (weakest at 28°). Exalted, it gives disciplined, effective energy; in its own sign, frank energy; in Cancer, a more emotional energy, which gains from setting precise goals rather than reacting. The Sun, the Moon and Jupiter are its friends, Mercury its enemy; Venus and Saturn are neutral to it.
In the Navamsha (D9), a well-placed Mars confirms the strength of the D1; a vargottama Mars gives a steady will from one end of the period to the other. For initiative and siblings, look at Mars in the D3 (Drekkana); for career, in the D10 (Dashamsha).
The antardashas of the Mars mahadasha
The nine sub-periods start from Mars and follow the order of the cycle. The visiting planet brings its colour, detailed by its own great period: Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus and the Sun. The lengths, calculated by the site:
- Mars–Mars, 4 months and 27 days: the initial drive, the urge to tackle a project.
- Mars–Rahu, 1 year and 18 days: two fiery forces; a boldness that opens doors, provided you stay methodical.
- Mars–Jupiter, 11 months and 6 days: action gains meaning; a mentor, a training, a project carried by values.
- Mars–Saturn, 1 year, 1 month and 9 days: accelerator and brake; perseverance turns frustration into solid results.
- Mars–Mercury, 11 months and 27 days: Mercury is the natural enemy of Mars; you negotiate, you learn a technique, and words gain from staying precise rather than cutting.
- Mars–Ketu, 4 months and 27 days: a saying of Jyotish holds that Ketu acts like Mars (Kujavat Ketu); a concentrated energy, to be put at the service of a single goal.
- Mars–Venus, 1 year and 2 months: the longest; desire, passion, creation, an intense love life.
- Mars–Sun, 4 months and 6 days: an ally; leadership, a responsibility you take on wholeheartedly.
- Mars–Moon, 7 months: action takes on an emotional tint; the period closes on the home before entering Rahu.
When does the Mars mahadasha fall in a life?
It all depends on the nakshatra of your natal Moon, which sets the first link of the chain. Two examples:
- Moon at 0° sidereal Libra, in the middle of Chitra: life opens in the period of Mars, of which 3 years and 6 months remain; Rahu then takes over until age twenty-one and a half.
- Moon at 0° sidereal Sagittarius, at the very start of Mula: Ketu rules until age 7, Venus until 27, the Sun until 33, the Moon until 43, then Mars from 43 to 50, often the time for a project long put off.
The junction (sandhi) between the Moon and Mars is often felt as a passage from feeling to action: what ripened for ten years finally asks to be done.
Is the Mars mahadasha difficult?
Mars has the reputation of a harsh planet, and its period that of a time of conflict. Above all it is a time of energy: the real question is where it goes. Its traps are impatience, anger, haste, pointless power struggles. Each one turns into a lever:
- Impatience becomes speed of execution as soon as a precise plan channels it.
- Anger tells you what matters to you: listened to with a cool head, it points to the cause worth defending.
- The need to burn off energy finds its place in sport, a building project, a physical goal.
- Rivalries spur you on, provided you choose your battles: a tense Mars gains from fighting only one at a time.
