The nakshatras
Chitra nakshatra: the jewel shaped by the architect of the gods
Chitra, the fourteenth nakshatra, stretches from 23°20′ Virgo to 6°40′ Libra in the sidereal zodiac, straddling two signs. Its name means “the bright one”, its star is Spica, its deity Vishvakarma, the architect of the gods, and its ruling planet Mars. It is the nakshatra of form done well: designing, building, giving lustre to whatever you touch.
Chitra nakshatra meaning
Chitra means “bright”, but also “many-coloured”: in Sanskrit the same word names an image, a painting. Its symbol is a jewel, a shining pearl. It holds a single star, Spica, the brightest in the constellation of Virgo. It is the fourteenth of the 27 nakshatras.
Spica plays a special role: the Lahiri ayanamsa, the one the site uses, places it at 0° Libra. It therefore sits at the exact middle of Chitra, on the seam between Virgo and Libra. It is the star that anchors the whole sidereal zodiac calculated by the site.
Tradition gives Chitra a rakshasa temperament, intense and independent, and a mridu nature, gentle. The paradox suits it: it is the firm hand that produces a delicate object, the noisy building site that ends as a palace.
Chitra nakshatra deity: who is it?
Chitra is presided over by Vishvakarma, “the maker of all”, the craftsman and architect of the gods. The ancient texts also name Tvashtar, the divine fashioner who gives beings their shape and forged Indra’s thunderbolt: tradition draws the two figures together, so much so that they are often merged.
Vishvakarma builds palaces, cities and celestial chariots; he designs before he builds. To Chitra he gives a taste for plans, for proportion, for fine workmanship. Whatever is made under this star has to work and be beautiful at once, or Chitra is not satisfied.
Chitra nakshatra ruling planet
The ruler of Chitra is Mars, the planet that cuts, builds and defends. It gives the energy to go from sketch to building site. In the Virgo half, from 23°20′ to 30°, Mars works in a sign of Mercury: precision, technique, meticulousness. In the Libra half, from 0° to 6°40′, it works in a sign of Venus: harmony, design, elegance. Venus, as it happens, reaches its deepest debilitation at 27° Virgo, inside Chitra: there it learns to love without demanding perfection.
A birth with the Moon in Chitra begins life in the Mars mahadasha, seven years in all, already under way. An example: a Moon at 5° Libra has covered 11°40′ of the 13°20′ of Chitra, or 87.5%; only 10 and a half months of Mars remain, and the long period of Rahu, eighteen years, opens before the first birthday, followed by Jupiter for sixteen years.
Chitra nakshatra characteristics: gifts and challenges
Its gifts: an eye for form, the talent of the architect, the designer, the goldsmith, the engineer, of anyone who assembles parts into a whole. Chitra loves to shine, and it often does. Its challenges come from the same fire, and each one turns into a lever:
- Perfectionism: endless retouching. Lever: set a delivery date, and deliver.
- The need to be seen: a brilliance that demands other people’s gaze. Lever: make the quality of the work your true signature, and attention will follow.
- The blade of Mars: criticism that is accurate, but cutting. Lever: say what works before what does not.
- Scattering: too many attractive projects at once. Lever: one building site open at a time, carried through to the last coat of varnish.
Moon in Chitra nakshatra: your Janma nakshatra
A Moon in Chitra feels through the eyes: the harmony of a room, an outfit, a face touches you directly, and disorder weighs on you. You need to create something, with your hands or your mind, to feel in your place, and for what you make to be recognised.
The mind of Chitra is quick, sometimes impatient: the fire of Mars runs beneath the lunar sensitivity. The lever is to let an emotion take shape, in a notebook, a drawing, an object, rather than cutting it off at a stroke. What stirs you up then becomes material to create with.
Chitra nakshatra ascendant
With the Ascendant in Chitra, people notice you: a polished look, a style, a presence with some sparkle. Mars, ruler of the nakshatra, becomes a planet to watch closely, alongside the ruler of your Ascendant, Mercury or Venus depending on whether the Ascendant falls in Virgo or in Libra. The house of Mars shows where you want to build.
The border between Virgo and Libra runs through the middle of Chitra: near that point, a few minutes of birth time are enough to change the sign of the Ascendant, and with it the whole layout of the houses. A precise birth time is essential here.
Chitra nakshatra padas
Each pada spans 3°20′ and gives a sign of the D9, the Navamsha. Two of the four are vargottama: a planet there keeps the same sign in the D1 and the D9, which makes it steadier and more reliable.
- Pada 1, from 23°20′ to 26°40′ Virgo, Leo in the D9: a brilliance that wants to be seen, a taste for the stage and for signed works.
- Pada 2, from 26°40′ to 30°00′ Virgo, Virgo in the D9, vargottama: meticulousness at its peak, the craftsperson of exactness, the detail that makes all the difference.
- Pada 3, from 0°00′ to 3°20′ Libra, Libra in the D9, vargottama: pure harmony, a sense of proportion, the art of bringing people into tune as well as forms; Spica stands on the threshold of this pada.
- Pada 4, from 3°20′ to 6°40′ Libra, Scorpio in the D9: beauty that digs deep, research, an attraction to what hides beneath the surface.
How do I know if my Moon is in Chitra?
The site calculates the nakshatras in the sidereal zodiac: your Vedic positions do not fall in the same signs as your Western chart, two readings of the sky that do not start from the same point (see tropical or sidereal).
- Enter your date, time and place of birth in the nakshatra calculator.
- Read the nakshatra of your Moon: if it is Chitra, its pada tells you which of the four shades is yours.
- Go through the Ascendant and each planet: a Mars or a Venus in Chitra is also read with this page.
- Open the dasha calculator to see what was left of the Mars period at your birth.
Chitra’s neighbours are Hasta, the hand that makes, and Swati, the wind that carries away: if your Moon is near an edge, read the neighbouring page as well.
Enter your birth details: the site calculates the nakshatra and pada of your Moon, your Ascendant and each planet, with their ruler and their deity.
