Vishvakarma: the architect of the gods, deity of Chitra

Vishvakarma, “the maker of all”, is the architect and craftsman of the gods. The Rig Veda sings of him as the builder of the world; the epics entrust him with palaces, cities and celestial chariots. Tradition links him with Tvashtar, the divine fashioner. He presides over Chitra, the nakshatra of the jewel: there he gives a sense of design and of form done well.

Who is Vishvakarma in the Vedas?

Vishvakarma (or Vishvakarman) joins vishva, “all”, and karman, “the act, the work”. Two hymns in the tenth book of the Rig Veda are devoted to him: there he is the creator who fashioned heaven and earth, with eyes, faces, arms and feet on every side, present in every part of his work.

These hymns ask a question that suits him: what was the wood, what was the tree from which heaven and earth were carved? Vishvakarma is the craftsman who thinks before he builds, the master builder as much as the worker. He does not merely produce: he conceives the whole, then each part in its place.

Tvashtar, the other name of the divine craftsman

The Rig Veda also knows Tvashtar, the fashioner of the gods. He is the one who forges the thunderbolt of Indra, the weapon of his victory over the serpent Vritra, and who gives beings their shape: one hymn asks him to fashion the forms of the child to be born. He is also the father of Saranyu, who marries Vivasvat, the Sun.

Later texts blend the two figures, and the astrological tradition names sometimes Vishvakarma, sometimes Tvashtar as the deity of Chitra. Both say the same thing: the expert hand that gives the world a form fit to live in, solid and beautiful.

Vishvakarma’s works in the epics

In the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas, Vishvakarma becomes the appointed architect of the gods. Each work attributed to him shows one facet of his art: the city, the vehicle, the weapon, always the form perfectly suited to its purpose. A few of the most famous:

  • Lanka, the golden city across the sea, where Ravana reigned.
  • Dvaraka, the city of Krishna, built on the shore of the ocean.
  • The Pushpaka, the celestial chariot on which Rama returns from Lanka to Ayodhya.
  • The weapons of the gods, among them Indra’s thunderbolt, which the Puranas say was shaped from the bones of the sage Dadhichi, given for the victory of the gods.

What Vishvakarma gives Chitra nakshatra

Vishvakarma presides over Chitra, from 23°20′ Virgo to 6°40′ sidereal Libra, ruled by Mars. The builder god and the planet of the building site go hand in hand: Chitra designs, then it builds. Its symbol, the jewel, is exactly what Vishvakarma makes, raw matter turned into a precious object.

He gives it a sense of proportion, a love of finished work and the wish for the work to be as beautiful as it is useful. The Virgo half of Chitra has something of the technician, the Libra half something of the designer: Vishvakarma is both at once.

He follows Savitar, the golden-handed sun of Hasta, and comes before Vayu, the wind of Swati: the hand that wakes, the form that is completed, then the breath that carries it out into the world.

How Vishvakarma shows in your chart

Look for Chitra in your Vedic chart: the Moon, the Ascendant or a planet placed between 23°20′ Virgo and 6°40′ Libra carries his imprint.

Look at Mars too, the ruler of Chitra: the house it occupies shows which building site of your life Vishvakarma’s drive goes to, your career, your home, a creative work, a place to build.

  • The Moon in Chitra: a deep need to create and to live in harmonious surroundings; your life begins in the Mars mahadasha.
  • The Ascendant in Chitra: a polished presence, a recognisable style, the wish to leave a body of work behind.
  • Mars in Chitra: the builder in its own nakshatra; the energy goes straight to the building site.
  • Venus in Chitra: a taste for beauty; in Virgo, where it is debilitated, it learns to love the imperfect, in Libra, its own sign, it is at home.

A simple practice inspired by Vishvakarma

In India, on the day of Vishvakarma Puja, craftspeople, workers and engineers clean their tools and machines, decorate them and let them rest: the tool is honoured as a working partner, and the workshop as a place worthy of respect.

You can keep its spirit without buying or imposing anything: once a month, take care of the tools of your trade, whether a plane, a keyboard or a notebook. Tidy them, mend them, thank them in silence. Then sketch the next piece of work on a page before you start it: that is the architect’s way.

Calculate your nakshatra: the site tells you whether Chitra, the nakshatra of Vishvakarma, marks your Moon, your Ascendant or one of your planets.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Vishvakarma?

Vishvakarma is the architect and craftsman of the gods. The Rig Veda sings of him as the creator who fashioned heaven and earth; the epics credit him with cities, palaces, celestial chariots and divine weapons. His name means “the maker of all”.

Are Vishvakarma and Tvashtar the same god?

They are two distinct figures in the Rig Veda, both craftsmen: Vishvakarma the builder of the world, Tvashtar the fashioner of forms and the smith of Indra’s thunderbolt. Tradition has often merged them, and astrology names one or the other as the deity of Chitra.

Which nakshatra does Vishvakarma preside over?

Chitra, the fourteenth nakshatra, from 23°20′ Virgo to 6°40′ sidereal Libra, ruled by Mars and marked by the star Spica. There he gives a sense of planning, of form and of work well finished.

What is Vishvakarma Puja?

An Indian festival in which craftspeople, workers and engineers honour their tools and machines: they are cleaned, decorated and left to rest that day. It captures the spirit of Vishvakarma well, respect for the instrument of work.

How do I know if Vishvakarma matters in my chart?

Check whether your Moon, your Ascendant or a planet sits in Chitra, between 23°20′ Virgo and 6°40′ sidereal Libra. The nakshatra calculator tells you for each planet and leads you to this page when Chitra appears.
