The nakshatras
Swati nakshatra: the shoot that bends in the wind without breaking
Swati, the fifteenth nakshatra, runs from 6°40′ to 20°00′ Libra in the sidereal zodiac. Its name is often translated as “the independent one”; its deity is Vayu, the wind, and its ruling planet Rahu. It is the nakshatra of freedom of movement: adapting, exchanging, making your own way without losing your roots.
Swati nakshatra meaning
Swati is often translated as “the independent one”, linking the name to sva, “self”: the one who goes by herself. Its symbol is a young shoot swaying in the wind, and its star is Arcturus, the brightest in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is the fifteenth of the 27 nakshatras, lying entirely within sidereal Libra.
The shoot is the right image: fragile in appearance, it bends under the gust and straightens up when the wind drops. Swati does not meet force with force; it yields on the form to keep what matters. Tradition gives it a deva temperament and a chara nature, movable, suited to journeys, travel and the start of new ventures.
Swati nakshatra deity: who is it?
Swati is presided over by Vayu, the god of wind and breath. In the Rig Veda he is swift, invisible, everywhere at once: you hear him without seeing him. He is also the vital breath, prana, which flows through every being and keeps it in motion.
Vayu gives Swati its mobility, its need for air and space, its ability to carry ideas and exchanges far from where they started. The wind clings to nothing and touches everything: Swati succeeds in roles that connect, transport and negotiate.
Swati nakshatra ruling planet
The ruler of Swati is Rahu, the north node of the Moon, the planet of ambition, of the new and of the foreign. It blows into Swati an appetite for horizons and experiences; Venus, ruler of Libra, adds diplomacy and a taste for agreement. The blend makes good negotiators, minds with a gift for trade, travellers curious about everything.
Two planets change register here. Saturn is exalted in Libra: in Swati, it gains a sense of justice and of the long run. The Sun is debilitated there, at its lowest at 10° Libra, right in Swati: it learns to shine through agreement rather than command, and then makes an excellent mediator.
A birth with the Moon in Swati begins life in the Rahu mahadasha, eighteen years in all, already under way. An example: a Moon at 15° Libra has covered 8°20′ of the 13°20′ of Swati, or 62.5%; 6 years and 9 months of Rahu remain, then come Jupiter (16 years, up to age 22 and 9 months) and Saturn (19 years, up to age 41 and 9 months).
Swati nakshatra characteristics: gifts and challenges
Its gifts: independence, adaptability, a sense of business and exchange, courtesy, a curiosity that drives you to learn everywhere. Swati knows how to make its own way and get along with almost everyone along the road. Its challenges are those of the wind, and each has its lever:
- Indecision: the shoot leans one way, then the other. Lever: set two or three criteria in advance, and decide as soon as they are met.
- Rahu’s restlessness: leaving before you have finished. Lever: keep one root project that moves forward while everything else shifts.
- The fear of being held: commitment felt as a cage. Lever: choose bonds that leave room to breathe, rather than running from all of them.
- Scattering: the wind carries off whatever is not tied down. Lever: a simple framework for what comes in and what goes out, time, energy, resources.
Moon in Swati nakshatra: your Janma nakshatra
A Moon in Swati needs air. You feel good when you can move, set your own pace, talk with all kinds of people; you suffocate when others decide for you. Your emotions pass quickly, like a shifting wind, and your natural kindness defuses many conflicts.
The lever is to give yourself an anchor you have chosen: a place, a practice, a person to come back to. The shoot does not fear the wind because it has roots; the stronger yours are, the further you can travel without losing yourself.
Swati nakshatra ascendant
With the Ascendant between 6°40′ and 20°00′ sidereal Libra, you step into the world with ease and courtesy: people find you approachable, open, diplomatic. Behind the ease lies a clear will to keep your freedom. Rahu, ruler of the nakshatra, becomes a key planet: its house shows where your longing for elsewhere leads you, alongside Venus, the ruler of your Ascendant.
Since Rahu rules no sign, also look at the ruler of the sign it occupies: that is the planet through which Swati’s drive takes shape in your everyday life.
Swati nakshatra padas
Each pada spans 3°20′ and corresponds to a sign of the D9, the Navamsha, the chart of bonds and maturity. Here are the four breaths of Swati:
- Pada 1, from 6°40′ to 10°00′ Libra, Sagittarius in the D9: the wind that carries far, the urge to learn, to travel, to stand up for an idea.
- Pada 2, from 10°00′ to 13°20′ Libra, Capricorn in the D9: the shoot that takes root, structured ambition, a practical sense of business.
- Pada 3, from 13°20′ to 16°40′ Libra, Aquarius in the D9: the breath of new ideas, networks, the strongest independence of mind.
- Pada 4, from 16°40′ to 20°00′ Libra, Pisces in the D9: the wind that softens, intuition, compassion, a taste for the invisible.
How do I know if my Moon is in Swati?
Your nakshatra is calculated in the sidereal zodiac: it is not the same division of the sky as in Western astrology, and the two readings do not place your planets in the same signs (see tropical or sidereal).
- Enter your date, time and place of birth in the nakshatra calculator.
- Read the nakshatra of the Moon: if it is Swati, the result gives its pada, Rahu as its ruler and a link to the page on Vayu.
- Look at the Ascendant and at each planet: a Saturn or a Sun in Swati is also read with this page.
- Open the dasha calculator: it dates your Rahu period and its nine sub-periods.
Swati sits between Chitra, the jewel of Vishvakarma, and Vishakha, the ambition of Indra-Agni: near an edge, one hour’s difference is enough to change nakshatra.
