Mahadasha
Rahu mahadasha: eighteen years to dare the new and change horizons
The Rahu mahadasha lasts 18 years in the Vimshottari, between the seven years of Mars and the sixteen years of Jupiter. Rahu, the north node of the Moon, opens the appetite: the new, the foreign, ambition, paths off the beaten track. Its frightening reputation is undeserved. It is a period of opening, which rewards boldness when a method holds it. Its house and the ruler of its sign show where it plays out.
How long does the Rahu mahadasha last?
Eighteen years, the third longest of the nine great periods of the Vimshottari, after those of Venus and Saturn. It follows the seven years of Mars and gives way to the sixteen years of Jupiter: the drive of Mars becomes ambition, and that ambition, under Jupiter, looks for meaning.
Rahu rules three nakshatras, Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha, which all run from 6°40′ to 20° of an air sign: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. A birth Moon in one of them opens life in Rahu’s period, already under way.
Who is Rahu, and what does his mahadasha bring into play?
Rahu is not a visible body: he is the north node of the Moon, one of the two points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s path, where eclipses take place. The site calculates him as the mean node, with Ketu exactly opposite. Tradition calls him a chaya graha, a “shadow planet”.
The myth tells that at the churning of the ocean, the asura Svarbhanu slipped in among the gods to drink the nectar of immortality. The Sun and the Moon gave him away, and Vishnu cut off his head: the head became Rahu, the body Ketu. Rahu is a head without a body, a hunger nothing satisfies, which has chased the Sun and the Moon ever since.
His period therefore puts the desire for more and for the new in the spotlight: ambition, foreign lands, technology, unknown circles, the public, paths the family had not planned. A saying of the tradition holds that Rahu acts like Saturn: he rewards sustained effort far more than a flash of brilliance.
Rahu mahadasha: effects by house and dispositor
Rahu rules no sign. During his period, he acts through the house he occupies, the ruler of the sign he sits in (his dispositor), the planets that join him and the ruler of his nakshatra. Tradition likes him in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, those that grow with effort: courage, competition, career and networks benefit from his daring there.
An example: for a Virgo Ascendant, a Rahu in Gemini occupies the 10th house, and his dispositor, Mercury, also rules the Ascendant. His period drives career, visibility and public projects, carried by the person themselves. Ketu, opposite, then sits in Sagittarius, in the 4th: the lever is to keep a home that recharges you while your career speeds up.
Rahu in the D1, the D9 and the D10: what guides his period
Rahu takes on the voice of the planets that join him in the D1 and amplifies it. Joined with Jupiter, he widens knowledge and beliefs; with Venus, pleasures and encounters; with Saturn, hard-working ambition; with the Moon, an intense sensitivity that needs anchoring.
Then look at the D9, above all the state of Rahu’s dispositor in the Navamsha: it shows whether the drive will last. For career, often at the heart of this period, the D10 shows where ambition finds its form.
The antardashas of the Rahu mahadasha
The eighteen years divide into nine sub-periods, from Rahu–Rahu to Rahu–Mars; how they nest inside one another is explained in what is a dasha. Their lengths and their colour:
- Rahu–Rahu, 2 years, 8 months and 12 days: the appetite settles in. A change of course, new ground; write down your goal, it will serve as a compass.
- Rahu–Jupiter, 2 years, 4 months and 24 days: ambition meets meaning. A teacher, studies, an ethic: the best safeguard of the period.
- Rahu–Saturn, 2 years, 10 months and 6 days: structure. Long-haul work, a responsibility; here, effort pays.
- Rahu–Mercury, 2 years, 6 months and 18 days: networks, technology, trade, languages. Ideas circulate, and Mercury sorts them.
- Rahu–Ketu, 1 year and 18 days: the two nodes face to face. Wanting more and letting go compete for the stage: a time to sort things out.
- Rahu–Venus, 3 years: the longest of the eighteen years. Pleasures, encounters, arts, luxury; the lever is to choose what truly nourishes you.
- Rahu–Sun, 10 months and 24 days: the shortest. Ego and authority are put to the test; humility and clarity give the Sun back its light.
- Rahu–Moon, 1 year and 6 months: emotions are stirred. A stable home, simple rituals and reliable people anchor the Moon.
- Rahu–Mars, 1 year and 18 days: energy and haste. A concrete project absorbs the drive, and Jupiter gets ready.
When does the Rahu mahadasha start?
It depends on the nakshatra of your Moon. In a Rahu nakshatra, you are born in his period; otherwise, it begins when the seven years of Mars end. Lived in youth, it often pushes you to leave, to study elsewhere, to choose an unexpected path; later on, it opens a career change, a project abroad, a long-held-back boldness. Two worked examples:
- A Moon at 10° sidereal Gemini has covered a quarter of Ardra: 13 years and 6 months of Rahu remain at birth, then Jupiter runs from 13 years and 6 months to 29 years and 6 months.
- A Moon at 0° Libra sits in the middle of Chitra, a Mars nakshatra: 3 years and 6 months of Mars remain, then Rahu runs from 3 years and 6 months to 21 years and 6 months, from childhood to the threshold of adult life.
Is the Rahu mahadasha bad?
No: it is intense. Its points of vigilance are those of hunger: wanting everything at once, comparing yourself, chasing an image, scattering yourself across ten projects, being dazzled by a promise that is too good, losing the thread of your values.
Its levers: a written goal reviewed every season, a working method, a trusted ally who dares to say no to you, a check before every commitment, and a practice that grounds you, whether sport, art or time in silence. Rahu supplies the momentum; you set the direction. Well channelled, his period opens doors no other period would have opened.
How do I know if I am in my Rahu mahadasha?
The site calculates your dashas from the exact position of your Moon, with the Lahiri ayanamsa and mean nodes. It needs your exact birth time: the Moon changes nakshatra about once a day.
- Open the dasha calculator and enter your date, time and place of birth.
- Read the current period: mahadasha, antardasha and their dates.
- On the timeline, find Rahu’s band and unfold its nine dated sub-periods.
- In your Vedic birth chart, show the dashas and read on the wheel the house of Rahu and that of his dispositor.
Enter your birth details: the site dates your Rahu mahadasha, the sub-period you are going through and all the ones that follow.
