Moon Mahadasha: ten years listening to the heart and the home

The Moon mahadasha, or Chandra dasha, lasts 10 years in the Vimshottari. It brings to the fore the mind, the emotions, the mother, the home and the bond with the public. It comes after the 6 years of the Sun and before the 7 years of Mars. Its colour depends on the house and sign of your Moon, its strength in the D9 and its phase: a full Moon and a waning Moon do not give the same period.

How long does the Moon mahadasha last?

The Moon’s period lasts 10 years, within the 120-year cycle of the Vimshottari. It follows the short period of the Sun, six years of self-assertion, and makes way for Mars, seven years of action. In between, the Moon opens a more inward decade, in which what you feel weighs as much as what you do.

It opens the life of those whose natal Moon is in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana, the Moon’s three nakshatras. The Moon then rules both the birth nakshatra and the first period: childhood is lived under a double lunar sign, closely attached to home and to familiar faces.

What does the Moon mahadasha mean?

The Moon, Chandra, is the natural significator of the mind (manas): the way you receive, feel and remember. It rules the mother, the home, what nourishes and what reassures, and the public, that anonymous crowd you speak to. It is also the planet that sets the starting point of all your dashas.

During these ten years, your needs ask to be heard. You move, you settle, you found or rearrange a home; the relationship with your mother, or with what nourished you, returns to the centre; a career turned towards others, hospitality, care or the public may take shape. It is a period in which you get to know yourself better, provided you listen to what rises.

Full, waning, exalted: the strength of your Moon

The Moon has a strength no other planet has: its phase. The further it is from the Sun at birth, the brighter it is, and the steadier and more generous its period. A Moon close to the new Moon is more discreet: the period then calls for support, routines, a place to land, and it gains in solidity as you build them.

It is exalted in Taurus (strongest at 3°), in its own sign in Cancer, debilitated in Scorpio (weakest at 3°). It has no enemy among the planets: the Sun and Mercury are its friends, the others are neutral to it. Exalted or in its own sign, it gives an emotionally settled decade; in Scorpio, a more intense period, which teaches you to cross the depths without getting lost in them.

The Navamsha (D9) shows whether that strength holds over time: a vargottama Moon, in the same sign in the D1 and the D9, is a Moon you can count on. For home and property, the D4 (Chaturthamsha) shows what the period establishes.

In which house does the Moon’s period play out?

The house of the Moon, counted in whole signs from the Ascendant, shows where your emotions are at work during these ten years. The Moon rules Cancer: the house that holds it is the second stage of the period.

  • In the 4th house, where it has its directional strength (dig bala): home, the mother, the homeland, settling down.
  • In the 5th house: children, creativity, romance, a heart that dares to express itself.
  • In the 7th house: the couple and partnerships; above all, you want to be understood.
  • In the 10th house: a career in the public eye, a reputation built on trust.
  • In the 11th house: friends, networks, the support that counts.
  • Aries Ascendant: the Moon rules the 4th house; the period revolves around home and family.
  • Scorpio Ascendant: it rules the 9th, the house of dharma, teachers and long journeys; the period widens your vision.

The nine antardashas of the Moon mahadasha and their length

The period divides into nine sub-periods, from the Moon to the Sun. To read each one, also look at the great period of the visiting planet: Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu and Venus each have their own page. The lengths, calculated by the site:

  • Moon–Moon, 10 months: the period settles in; mood and needs set the measure.
  • Moon–Mars, 7 months: emotion turns into action; a project at home, a decision made with the heart.
  • Moon–Rahu, 1 year and 6 months: a wish for change, an elsewhere that beckons; a regular rhythm calms the restlessness.
  • Moon–Jupiter, 1 year and 4 months: trust, generosity, precious advice, a family circle that widens.
  • Moon–Saturn, 1 year and 7 months: sensitivity meets duty; responsibilities mature the heart, regularity protects it.
  • Moon–Mercury, 1 year and 5 months: putting words to what you feel; writing, learning, exchanging.
  • Moon–Ketu, 7 months: a need for retreat and silence, favourable to introspection.
  • Moon–Venus, 1 year and 8 months: the longest; gentleness, beauty, love life, a home you make more beautiful.
  • Moon–Sun, 6 months: the period closes on the question of role and place, just before the drive of Mars.

At what age does the Moon mahadasha come?

The timing depends on the nakshatra of your natal Moon. Two cases among many:

  • Moon at 20° sidereal Capricorn, in Shravana: the Moon has covered three quarters of the way. Life opens in its period, of which 2 years and 6 months remain, then Mars rules until age nine and a half.
  • Moon at 20° sidereal Leo, in the middle of Purva Phalguni: Venus rules until age 10, the Sun from 10 to 16, then the Moon from 16 to 26, the decade when you often leave your childhood home to build your own.

At the passage from the Sun to the Moon, the sandhi (the junction of the two periods) shifts the focus: from the place you hold to what you need to feel at home in it.

What the period asks of you: pitfalls and levers

The Moon makes you sensitive, and sensitivity is a strength as long as it does not rule alone. Its pitfalls: moods that decide for you, dependence on the way others see you, difficulty saying no to those you love. The levers are simple, and powerful:

  • Rhythms: regular hours, calm meals, a place of your own; the Moon grows stronger through regularity.
  • A notebook: writing down what you feel turns emotion into understanding.
  • Clear boundaries: taking care of others starts with not forgetting yourself.
  • A weakened Moon (waning, in Scorpio, or surrounded by harsh planets) does not doom the period: it makes it deeper, and every support you build counts double.

Am I in the Moon mahadasha?

The dasha calculator answers from your date, time and place of birth. It shows the nakshatra of your Moon and the share of the first period elapsed at birth, the current mahadasha and antardasha with their dates, then the timeline of your great periods, each with its nine sub-periods to unfold.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Moon mahadasha last?

Ten years, within the 120-year cycle of the Vimshottari. It divides into nine antardashas, from 6 months (Moon–Sun) to 1 year and 8 months (Moon–Venus). It comes after the Sun’s period and before that of Mars, or opens life if your natal Moon is in Rohini, Hasta or Shravana.

Is the Moon mahadasha a good period?

It is worth what your Moon is worth. Bright, exalted in Taurus or in its own sign in Cancer, it gives a stable and warm decade. Waning or in Scorpio, it makes the period more intense and calls for support: regular rhythms, a home that reflects you, people you can trust.

What happens during the Moon–Rahu antardasha?

For 1 year and 6 months, Rahu stirs the Moon’s waters: a wish for change, the pull of elsewhere, sharper emotions. It is a good time to dare a move or a new project, provided you keep fixed landmarks: set hours, close people, a place to come back to.

Why does the Moon’s phase matter for its mahadasha?

Because the Moon draws its light from the Sun. Born far from it, around the full Moon, it is strong and its period generous. Born close to the new Moon, it is more discreet: the period then asks you to build your support, and it grows sturdier as you build it.

Which mahadasha comes after the Moon’s?

That of Mars, for 7 years. You move from needs to action: what ripened during the lunar decade asks to be done. Before the Moon comes the short period of the Sun, six years devoted to place and identity.

How do I know if I am in the Moon mahadasha?

The site’s dasha calculator tells you from your date, time and place of birth: the current period and sub-period with their dates, and the timeline of your whole life. Since dashas start from the Moon, the exact time matters: one hour of difference shifts the dates.
