Rohini Nakshatra: the Moon’s favourite mansion, between beauty and growth

Rohini is the fourth of the 27 nakshatras: it covers 10°00′ to 23°20′ Taurus in the sidereal zodiac. Its ruler is the Moon, its deity Brahma, the creator (Prajapati in the Vedic texts), its star Aldebaran. It is the nakshatra of growth, beauty and attraction: what is sown here takes root and grows.

Rohini nakshatra meaning

The name Rohini is most often translated as “the red one”: it refers to Aldebaran, the orange star shining in the constellation of the Bull. You can also hear in it the Sanskrit root ruh, “to grow”, “to rise”: Rohini is the nakshatra of what grows, and tradition credits it with rohana shakti, the power to make things grow.

Its symbol is a chariot, or a cart drawn by oxen: the image of abundance on the move, loaded with harvest. Rohini sits at the heart of sidereal Taurus, between Krittika, Agni’s blade, and Mrigashira, the quest of the deer. After Krittika’s cut comes fertile ground, ready to be planted.

The best-known story makes Rohini the Moon’s favourite wife. Soma, the lunar god, had married the twenty-seven daughters of Daksha, one for each nakshatra, but wanted to live with her alone; Daksha’s anger made him wane, and the appeasement that followed turned this loss into a cycle: the Moon wanes, then is reborn every month (see Soma). Tradition also places the birth of Krishna under Rohini.

Brahma, the deity of Rohini

The deity of Rohini is Brahma, the creator; the Vedic texts call him Prajapati, “the lord of creatures”. Rohini thus receives the very principle of creation: the one who conceives the world, gives it form and brings it to birth. From him it takes the taste for shaping, for giving body to an idea and for making what it has begun last.

Brahma sits on a lotus, with four faces turned to the four directions and the Vedas in his hands; his consort Sarasvati is the goddess of speech and the arts. Hence the gifts attributed to Rohini: speech that charms, an aesthetic sense, fertile projects. His myths are told on the page of Brahma.

The Moon, ruler of Rohini: what it colours

Rohini is ruled by the Moon, and Taurus is the Moon’s sign of exaltation: a Moon in Rohini is at home twice over. The Moon brings receptivity, the memory of the body, the need to nourish and to be nourished. A planet placed here receives that softness: it works by attraction rather than by force.

The ruler also sets the clock. A birth with the Moon in Rohini begins life in the Moon mahadasha, a ten-year period, already under way in proportion to the distance the Moon has covered in the nakshatra. An example: a Moon at 12° sidereal Taurus has travelled 2° of 13°20′, or 15%; 85% of the ten years remains, eight and a half years of lunar period. Mars then Rahu follow, in the order of the Vimshottari dashas.

Rohini’s qualities and challenges

Rohini is one of the dhruva, “fixed”, nakshatras: tradition chooses it to lay foundations, to plant, to settle. Its gana is manushya, human, and its animal the serpent, slow and magnetic. Here are its gifts, then its challenges turned into levers:

  • A sense of beauty: an eye for harmony, materials, the table, music; Rohini knows how to make a place feel like home.
  • Patient growth: it makes whatever is entrusted to it flourish, a garden, a craft, a friendship.
  • Magnetism: people come to it; it gets more through presence than through insistence.
  • Attachment: Rohini holds on to what it loves, sometimes too tightly. The lever: keep the hand open and let what has finished growing make room.
  • Comfort: it can lull the drive to sleep. The lever: a concrete project to grow, which gives the taste for well-being a direction.
  • Wanting more: the Moon likes to be fulfilled. The lever: savour what is already there before looking for what comes next.

Moon in Rohini: what does it mean?

The nakshatra of the Moon, the Janma nakshatra, is the most read point of the Vedic chart. In Rohini, it describes a rich, sensual sensitivity, attached to stability: you need an anchor, a beautiful and safe setting, faithful bonds. Emotion passes through the senses: a shared meal, a fabric, a voice soothe you more than a long argument.

The deep need is to make something grow: a home, a body of work, a bond. When that growth is under way, a Moon in Rohini shows rare generosity; when it stalls, worry rises. The lever: give yourself a project your own size, and measure the road travelled rather than the road ahead.

And a Rohini Ascendant?

An Ascendant in Rohini gives a soft, settled presence, a charm that forces nothing, a visible taste for quality. People often see you as calm, even when things are boiling inside. The ruler of the nakshatra, the Moon, becomes a key planet: its house in your chart shows where your energy goes of its own accord. Venus, ruler of Taurus, is the other planet to watch.

The Ascendant crosses Rohini in a little under an hour on average: without an exact birth time, neither its nakshatra nor its pada is reliable.

The four padas of Rohini

Each pada spans 3°20′ and points to a sign of the Navamsha, the D9: it shades the way Rohini makes things grow.

  • Pada 1 (10°00′–13°20′ Taurus), Aries in the D9: drive; growth starts fast, carried by a taste for initiative.
  • Pada 2 (13°20′–16°40′ Taurus), Taurus in the D9: the heart of Rohini; a planet here is vargottama, same sign in the D1 and the D9, which makes it steady and solid.
  • Pada 3 (16°40′–20°00′ Taurus), Gemini in the D9: speech, exchange, curiosity; Rohini learns to say what it can do.
  • Pada 4 (20°00′–23°20′ Taurus), Cancer in the D9: care, family, memory; the most nurturing part of the nakshatra.

How do I know if I was born under Rohini?

Rohini is read in the sidereal zodiac, shifted by about 24° from the Western zodiac: two different readings of the sky (see tropical or sidereal). The 27 mansions are presented on the nakshatras page; for yours, the simplest way is to let the site calculate.

  1. Open the nakshatra calculator and enter the date, exact time and place of birth.
  2. The result gives the nakshatra of your Moon, its pada, its ruler and its deity, with a link to their pages.
  3. It also gives the nakshatra of your Ascendant and that of each planet, Rahu and Ketu included, each with its pada.
  4. For the dates of your Moon period, go to the dasha calculator; to see everything on one page, to the Vedic birth chart.

A Moon born at the very start or the very end of Rohini can tip into the neighbouring nakshatra with an hour’s difference: the Moon moves half a degree per hour.

Enter your date, exact time and place of birth: the site calculates the nakshatra of your Moon, of your Ascendant and of each planet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the deity of Rohini nakshatra?

Brahma, the creator, whom the Vedic texts call Prajapati, the lord of creatures. He gives Rohini the power to bring to birth and to make grow: a sense of form, fertile projects, the taste for building what lasts.

What is the ruling planet of Rohini?

The Moon. A Moon in Rohini is in its own nakshatra and in Taurus, its sign of exaltation: it is strong and receptive there. A birth with the Moon in Rohini begins with the Moon mahadasha, a ten-year period part of which has already elapsed at birth.

Is Rohini a good nakshatra?

It is considered one of the most favourable: fixed, fertile, ruled by an exalted Moon. Its challenges are those of abundance: attachment, comfort that lulls, the wish for ever more. Like any nakshatra, it is read with the planet in it, its ruler and the rest of the chart.

What does it mean to have the Moon in Rohini?

A rich, sensual sensitivity, a need for stability, beauty and faithful bonds, and a deep wish to make something grow. Emotion passes through the senses. The lever: choose a project your own size and appreciate the road already travelled.

What are the padas of Rohini?

Four quarters of 3°20′. The first (10°00′ to 13°20′ Taurus) gives Aries in the D9, the second Taurus, the third Gemini, the fourth Cancer. A planet in the second pada is vargottama: same sign in the D1 and the D9, which strengthens it.

Which star is Rohini?

Aldebaran, the reddish-orange star of the constellation of the Bull, surrounded by the stars of the Hyades. The name Rohini, the red one, comes from that colour. In the sidereal zodiac, Aldebaran lies near the middle of the nakshatra.
