Nakshatra
Krittika Nakshatra: the Pleiades, the blade and the fire of Agni
Krittika, the third of the 27 nakshatras, stretches from 26°40′ Aries to 10° sidereal Taurus: it is the Pleiades cluster. Its name means “those who cut”; its symbol is the blade or the flame, its deity Agni, fire, and its ruler the Sun. It gives discernment, frankness and the power to purify. A Moon in Krittika opens life in the Sun’s period.
What does Krittika nakshatra mean?
Krittika comes from the root krit, to cut: they are “those who cut”. In the sky, it is the Pleiades cluster, the small group of tightly packed stars you can spot with the naked eye on autumn and winter evenings. In the oldest lists, those of the Vedas, Krittika opened the series of nakshatras; counting from Ashwini came later.
The Indian month of Kartika owes its name to it: it is the month when the full moon shines near the Pleiades. Krittika follows Bharani, which carried and ripened; it cuts, sorts and purifies, before giving way to Rohini, the nakshatra of growth.
Symbol and deity: the blade, the flame and Agni
Krittika’s symbol is a blade, a razor or a knife, and often a flame. Both say the same thing: separating what is true from what is not. Its deity is Agni, the fire of the Vedas, the one who receives offerings and carries them to the gods. Agni purifies, cooks, illuminates: nothing passes through him without being transformed.
The Krittikas are also the six nurses of Skanda, the young warrior god, who owes them his name Kartikeya. Krittika therefore has two faces: the blade that cuts and the mother who feeds and protects. Tradition classes it as rakshasa (of untamed temperament, not to be pushed around), gives it the ewe as its animal and calls it mishra, “mixed”: sharp and gentle at once, like fire that burns and warms.
The Sun, ruler of Krittika
Krittika is ruled by the Sun, the planet of the soul, authority and clarity. Sun and fire: it is the brightest nakshatra at the start of the zodiac, the one that tells things to your face. The Sun also rules Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha, both straddling two signs, like Krittika.
A Moon in Krittika starts life in the Sun mahadasha, the shortest of the cycle: 6 years. An example: a Moon at 0° Taurus has covered the first quarter of Krittika, the 3°20′ in Aries; three quarters of the 6 years remain, that is 4 years and 6 months. The Moon then takes over for 10 years, then Mars for 7 years, then Rahu for 18 years.
Another notable feature: the Moon reaches its exaltation at 3° Taurus, at the heart of Krittika. Placed there, it combines the stability of Taurus with the clarity of fire: frank, steady emotions that others can count on.
Krittika’s qualities, and their levers
Krittika is the nakshatra of sorting: it keeps what is worth keeping and burns the rest. Its gifts, and how to turn them into strengths:
- Discernment: you see what is wrong before others do. The lever: offer a solution each time you point out a flaw.
- Frankness: your words go straight to the point. The lever: use the blade to sculpt, not to wound; the same truth lands better alongside sincere acknowledgement.
- Moral courage: standing up for what is right, even alone. The lever: choose your causes, so that the fire lasts instead of burning out.
- A protective sense: the legacy of Skanda’s nurses; you watch over those who depend on you. The lever: protect without smothering, leaving others their own battles.
- High standards: for yourself as for others. The lever: keep perfection for what truly matters, and accept elsewhere what is simply well done.
The Moon in Krittika: your Janma nakshatra
With the Moon in Krittika, the mind is quick and upright: you sense at once what rings false, and injustice cuts you to the quick. You need truth, respect and a role where your high standards serve a purpose. Lukewarm compromises cost you more than an open disagreement.
The lever is warmth: Krittika’s fire warms as much as it burns. A Krittika Moon that allows itself tenderness, towards itself first, becomes a protective presence that others seek out. Look at the Sun’s position in your chart: its house shows where this Moon wants to shine and make itself useful.
The Ascendant in Krittika
With the Ascendant in Krittika, people see you as clear-cut, dignified, sometimes intimidating at first, then reliable. The first reflex is to clarify: set the rules, say what is. If the Ascendant falls in the first pada, in Aries, Mars becomes your chart ruler; in the other three, in Taurus, it is Venus. Either way, the Sun, ruler of the nakshatra, deserves close attention.
The four padas of Krittika
Krittika has one foot in Aries and three in Taurus. The same fire therefore changes ground: it cuts in the sign of Mars, it cooks and transforms in that of Venus. Its padas give the Navamsha, the D9, the last four signs of the zodiac:
- Pada 1 (26°40′–30° Aries), Sagittarius in the D9: the fire of conviction; the urge to teach, to guide, to defend an ideal.
- Pada 2 (0°–3°20′ Taurus), Capricorn in the D9: disciplined fire that builds; it holds the Moon’s degree of exaltation.
- Pada 3 (3°20′–6°40′ Taurus), Aquarius in the D9: the blade serving a common cause; the spirit of reform.
- Pada 4 (6°40′–10° Taurus), Pisces in the D9: fire softened; compassion, imagination, devotion.
How do I know if my Moon is in Krittika?
The site calculates the nakshatra of each of your planets in the sidereal zodiac, from your exact time of birth. For Krittika this is all the more useful because it straddles two signs: the pada tells you which side of the border you are on.
- Enter your date, time and place of birth in the nakshatra calculator.
- Read the nakshatra of your Moon and its pada: pada 1, you are in Aries; padas 2 to 4, in Taurus.
- Follow the link to its deity’s page, and see which other planets are in Krittika.
- Open the dasha calculator to date your Sun period and the ones that follow, or the Vedic birth chart to see everything on one wheel.
Enter your birth details: the site tells you whether Krittika holds your Moon, your Ascendant or one of your planets, and on which side of the border between Aries and Taurus.
