Uttara Ashadha, the nakshatra of lasting victory: winning with integrity

Uttara Ashadha is the twenty-first nakshatra: it runs from 26°40′ Sagittarius to 10°00′ Capricorn in the sidereal zodiac. Its name means “the later invincible one”: the victory that cannot be taken back. Ruled by the Sun and presided over by the Vishvedevas, the universal gods, it succeeds slowly, with integrity and in the service of all. A Moon here opens life in the Sun’s period.

Uttara Ashadha nakshatra meaning

Uttara means “later”, “higher”; ashadha, “invincible”. After Purva Ashadha, which declares the victory, Uttara Ashadha makes it final. It is the twenty-first of the 27 nakshatras. Unlike Mula and Purva Ashadha, which lie entirely in Sagittarius, it straddles two signs: its first pada closes Jupiter’s Sagittarius, the other three open Saturn’s Capricorn.

That crossing says everything about its character: the ideal of Sagittarius becomes concrete commitment in Capricorn. It is marked by two stars of the Archer, Nunki and Ascella. Its symbol is an elephant’s tusk, an image of calm strength and of what lasts; the planks of a bed are also cited, the rest earned after the effort.

Some calendars place a twenty-eighth nakshatra, Abhijit, “the victorious”, marked by the star Vega, at the junction of Uttara Ashadha and Shravana. The dasha calculation, for its part, counts twenty-seven nakshatras.

The Vishvedevas, deities of Uttara Ashadha

Uttara Ashadha is presided over by the Vishvedevas, “all the gods”: in the Vedas, the assembly of deities invoked together so that none is forgotten. Their presence gives the nakshatra a sense of the common good: a victory that crushes no one, because it was won together with everyone.

The traditions that give them names place among them truth, will, skill, steadfastness: so many qualities Uttara Ashadha puts at the service of a goal. It is not after a dazzling stroke; it is after what will still be right in ten years’ time.

The Sun, ruler of Uttara Ashadha: what it colours

Uttara Ashadha is ruled by the Sun, the planet of the soul, of authority and of the place you hold. The Sun also rules Krittika and Uttara Phalguni; here, on the threshold of Capricorn, it gives an authority that is earned through work and kept through example.

A birth with the Moon in Uttara Ashadha starts life in the Sun mahadasha, 6 years long, already under way in proportion to the distance the Moon had covered. With a Moon at 3°20′ Capricorn, halfway through the nakshatra, 3 years of the Sun remain; then comes the Moon mahadasha, 10 years long. The dasha calculator gives the dates.

Uttara Ashadha’s qualities, and its challenges turned into levers

Tradition counts Uttara Ashadha among the dhruva nakshatras, the “fixed” ones, favourable to whatever you want to last, and gives it the manushya temperament, human and concrete. Its animal is the mongoose, small and fearless, which backs away from no opponent; no other nakshatra shares it. Here is what it gives, and how to use it:

  • Integrity: it keeps its word, even when it costs. The lever: keep for others the leniency you do not grant yourself.
  • Perseverance: it moves step by step towards the goal. The lever: celebrate the milestones instead of waiting for the finish line to breathe.
  • A sense of responsibility: people naturally hand it the lead. The lever: delegate, so as not to carry everything alone.
  • Quiet leadership: the Sun gives it authority without noise. The lever: explain your decisions, so you are followed and not merely obeyed.
  • Late success: what it builds holds for a long time. The lever: accept that its best fruit ripens with time.

Moon in Uttara Ashadha: what this Janma nakshatra says

When the Moon is in Uttara Ashadha, it is your Janma nakshatra, the birth star that describes how your mind takes in life. Here it needs coherence: acting according to its values, knowing why it gets up in the morning. The emotions are steady, loyal, not very demonstrative, and of rare faithfulness.

This Moon feels safe when it has a direction and clear commitments. Its lever: allow itself to show doubt or a need for help, because the people around it are only waiting to support it.

Uttara Ashadha Ascendant

With the Ascendant in Uttara Ashadha, you step into the world with seriousness and dignity: a presence that inspires trust, measured words, the air of someone others can count on. The Sun, ruler of the nakshatra, becomes a planet to watch: its house shows where your need to accomplish plays out.

The chart ruler depends on the pada: Jupiter if the Ascendant is still in Sagittarius, in the first pada; Saturn if it is already in Capricorn. Since the Ascendant changes sign as soon as the first pada ends, the exact time counts twice over.

The four padas of Uttara Ashadha

Each pada spans 3°20′ and corresponds to a sign of the Navamsha, the D9. The first two padas fall in the same sign in the D1 and the D9: a planet there is vargottama, which strengthens it.

  • Pada 1 (26°40′–30°00′ Sagittarius), Sagittarius in the D9, vargottama: the victory of the ideal; teaching, guiding, defending a just vision.
  • Pada 2 (0°00′–3°20′ Capricorn), Capricorn in the D9, vargottama: victory through effort; remarkable structure, ambition and endurance.
  • Pada 3 (3°20′–6°40′ Capricorn), Aquarius in the D9: collective victory; serving a group, a cause, a project bigger than oneself.
  • Pada 4 (6°40′–10°00′ Capricorn), Pisces in the D9: inner victory; compassion, faith, a success that is shared.

How do I know if I was born under Uttara Ashadha?

Uttara Ashadha is read in the sidereal zodiac, which does not coincide with the tropical zodiac of Western astrology: they are two readings of the sky (see tropical or sidereal). The site does the calculation:

  1. Open the nakshatra calculator and enter your date, time and place of birth.
  2. Read the nakshatra of your Moon and its pada: if it is Uttara Ashadha, its page and that of the Vishvedevas are linked.
  3. Look at the nakshatra of your Ascendant, then that of each planet: a Sun or a Saturn in Uttara Ashadha is also read through it.
  4. To see the wheel, the nakshatras and the dashas on one page, open your Vedic birth chart.

Note the pada: in the first and second, the planet is vargottama, stronger and more reliable. In the third and fourth, the victory of Uttara Ashadha turns towards others.

Enter your date, time and place of birth: the site calculates the nakshatra of your Moon, that of your Ascendant and that of each planet, with their pada.
