Shravana Nakshatra: the art of listening, under the gaze of Vishnu
Shravana is the 22nd nakshatra of the Vedic zodiac: it runs from 10°00′ to 23°20′ sidereal Capricorn. Its name comes from the Sanskrit root shru, “to hear”: it is the nakshatra of listening, of knowledge received through the spoken word and passed on in turn. Its ruler is the Moon and its deity is Vishnu, the one who sustains the world; its symbol is an ear, or three footprints.
What does Shravana nakshatra mean?
Shravana means “listening”, “hearing”. The root shru is also the root of shruti, “that which was heard”, the name tradition gives to the Vedas themselves: knowledge handed down from mouth to ear for centuries before it was written. Shravana carries that memory. It gives attention, the art of learning by listening and the wish to keep intact what one has received.
It is the 22nd of the 27 nakshatras, lying wholly in sidereal Capricorn, a sign of Saturn: here listening becomes a discipline. It follows Uttara Ashadha and comes before Dhanishtha. In the sky it is marked by Altair and its two neighbours in the constellation of the Eagle, three stars almost in a line.
Shravana also sets a rhythm in the Indian year. The lunar month of Shravana, the Sawan of northern India, takes its name from the full moon that falls near it. In the south it is called Thiruvonam, and in Kerala the festival of Onam peaks on the day the Moon crosses it: a festival that tells of the return of King Mahabali, the king from whom Vishnu asked three steps of land.
Shravana symbol and deity: the ear and the three strides of Vishnu
Shravana has two symbols that answer each other. The ear speaks of receiving: before acting, you listen. The three footprints, of uneven size, point to the three strides of its deity. In the form of Vamana, a dwarf brahmin, Vishnu asks King Mahabali for as much space as three steps cover; the king agrees, and two strides are enough to cover earth and sky. A modest request, carried with patience, ends up taking the measure of the world: that is how Shravana moves forward.
Vishnu is the one who sustains: where others create or undo, he preserves order and whatever has value. He gives Shravana a sense of continuity, loyalty to a tradition, a teacher or a promise, and a quiet talent for connecting people without making a sound.
The Moon, ruler of Shravana: what it colours
Shravana is one of the Moon’s three nakshatras, along with Rohini and Hasta. Here the Moon works inside a sign of Saturn: sensitivity is put at the service of a structure. It gives an emotional memory for voices and words, a feel for what a group is going through, a taste for learning from someone rather than alone. Saturn asks that this listening build something that lasts.
The ruler also sets the clock of your life. A birth Moon in Shravana opens life in the Moon mahadasha, a ten-year period, already under way in proportion to the distance covered. A Moon at 20° Capricorn has crossed three quarters of Shravana: a quarter of the ten years remains, about two years and six months; then come the seven years of Mars, and the cycle of the Vimshottari dashas unfolds in its order.
Shravana nakshatra qualities and challenges
Tradition places Shravana among the deva nakshatras, of divine temperament, turned towards harmony, and among the movable nakshatras (chara), favourable to travel and to anything set in motion; its animal is the monkey. Its gifts: attention to detail, a faithful memory, the patience of the student who one day becomes the teacher, the art of carrying information between people who do not talk to each other.
Its challenges spring from the same source, and each one turns into a lever:
- Listening to everyone until you no longer hear yourself: write down your own conclusions before asking others what they think.
- Being sensitive to what is said about you: reputation matters to Shravana; go and check at the source rather than listening to the echo.
- Staying the eternal student: you often know enough to pass it on; start teaching before you feel ready.
- Holding on to the structure until it stiffens: Capricorn loves rules; remember that Vishnu changes form to save what matters most.
Moon in Shravana nakshatra: the Janma nakshatra of listening
If your Moon is in Shravana, it is your Janma nakshatra, your birth star. Your mind settles once it understands: a situation explained reassures you more than a comforting gesture. Your deep need is twofold, to be heard and to be able to listen. You keep whole sentences in memory, the advice of an elder, a song learnt as a child, and they guide you for a long time.
This Moon likes landmarks: a daily rhythm, a teacher, a quiet place. Noise and contradictory information tire it; silence recharges it. The lever: choose what you let into your ears, the way you choose what you eat.
Shravana nakshatra Ascendant
With the Ascendant in Shravana, you step into the world by listening: people see you as calm, attentive, a little reserved, someone who speaks once they have read the room. That restraint inspires trust, and people soon come to tell you what they say nowhere else.
Two planets then become central: Saturn, the chart ruler for a Capricorn Ascendant, and the Moon, ruler of the nakshatra. The house your Moon occupies shows where your energy goes of its own accord. The Ascendant crosses a nakshatra in a little under an hour on average: without an exact birth time, there is no placing it here with certainty.
The four padas of Shravana
Shravana is divided into four padas of 3°20′, each linked to a sign of the Navamsha, the D9. The pada refines the shade of the listening:
- Pada 1 (10°00′–13°20′ Capricorn), Aries in the D9: listening that turns into action. You learn in order to act, and you dare the first step.
- Pada 2 (13°20′–16°40′ Capricorn), Taurus in the D9: listening that bears fruit. The voice, taste, knowledge gathered with constancy.
- Pada 3 (16°40′–20°00′ Capricorn), Gemini in the D9: listening that circulates. Languages, writing, mediation, networks.
- Pada 4 (20°00′–23°20′ Capricorn), Cancer in the D9: listening that protects. Family memory, care; here the Moon finds its own sign in the D9.
How do I find Shravana in my chart?
Shravana is read in the sidereal zodiac. The Western zodiac and the Vedic zodiac are two readings of the sky, offset from each other (see tropical or sidereal): only the sidereal position of your Moon counts here.
- Open the nakshatra calculator and enter your date, exact time and place of birth.
- Read the nakshatra of the Moon and its pada: if it is Shravana, the result leads you to this page and to Vishnu’s.
- Look at the nakshatra of the Ascendant, then that of each planet: a planet in Shravana takes on the colour of listening.
- Move on to the dasha calculator to see the periods of your life, with their dates.
No Moon in Shravana? Look for the planet that sits there. Mercury in Shravana learns by ear, Jupiter teaches there, Saturn keeps a tradition alive.
