Nakshatra
Ashwini Nakshatra: the first lunar mansion, the drive of the healing twins
Ashwini is the first of the 27 nakshatras: it spans 0° to 13°20′ sidereal Aries. Its symbol is a horse’s head, its deity the Ashwini Kumaras, twin physicians of the gods, and its ruler Ketu. It gives speed, a taste for beginnings and the gift of setting in motion what had come to a halt. A Moon in Ashwini opens life in Ketu’s period.
What does Ashwini nakshatra mean?
The name comes from the Sanskrit ashva, horse: Ashwini means “she who owns horses”, the horsewoman. It opens the sidereal zodiac and the round of the 27 nakshatras: its 13°20′ run from 0° to 13°20′ Aries, entirely within that sign. In the sky, two stars of the Ram’s head mark it, Sheratan and Mesarthim (Beta and Gamma Arietis).
This 0° Aries belongs to the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars: today it lies about 24° from the starting point of the Western zodiac, two readings of the sky compared on the tropical or sidereal page.
Ashwini follows Revati, the last nakshatra, which closes the cycle at 30° Pisces. This passage from water to fire, which tradition calls gandanta (the knot), makes the first degrees of Ashwini a threshold: you step into something new with the momentum of someone leaving a whole cycle behind. What Ashwini launches, Bharani, the next nakshatra, will carry.
Symbol and deity: the horse’s head and the Ashwini Kumaras
Ashwini’s symbol is a horse’s head: the mount that sets off at a gallop, the messenger who arrives before everyone else. Its deity, the Ashwini Kumaras, are twin horsemen, physicians of the gods, who appear at dawn on their chariot and rescue those who call on them. They restore sight, youth and mobility: their nakshatra carries this gift of reviving what had frozen.
Tradition classes Ashwini among the deva nakshatras (of divine temperament, inclined to harmony), gives it the horse as its animal (yoni) and calls it laghu, “light”, swift. When choosing an auspicious moment, it is one of those kept for setting out, beginning a course of care or starting to learn something.
Ketu, ruler of Ashwini: the instinct that already knows
Ashwini is ruled by Ketu, the south node of the Moon, which myth depicts as a body without a head. The contrast speaks for itself: a horse-headed nakshatra ruled by a headless planet. Ketu gives what comes from before, skills acquired who knows where, the intuition that acts before it reasons. In Ashwini, you often know what to do before you know why.
Ketu also rules Magha and Mula: the three nakshatras that open a fire sign, right after a water sign. All three are beginnings, and all three ask you to cut with the old in order to move on.
A Moon in Ashwini starts life in the Ketu mahadasha, which lasts 7 years in all and is already under way at birth. An example: a Moon at 10° Aries has covered three quarters of Ashwini; one quarter of the 7 years remains, that is 1 year and 9 months. Venus then takes over for 20 years, until age 21 years and 9 months, followed by the Sun for 6 years. The dasha calculator works this out to the day.
Ashwini’s qualities, and their levers
Ashwini gives a pioneer’s energy, young at any age. The Sun reaches its highest exaltation at 10° Aries, at the heart of this nakshatra: the will is at its most direct here. Here is what it brings, and how to make the most of it:
- Speed: you start before others do. The lever: see one project through before opening the next.
- The gift of relief: care, advice, repairs, a helping hand. The lever: keep some of the care you give for yourself.
- Independence: Ashwini does not wait for permission. The lever: let those who count on you know, so that your drive is not mistaken for carelessness.
- Impatience: the flip side of speed. The lever: turn it into a tempo, with short steps that give a sense of progress.
- Freshness: meeting every situation as if for the first time. The lever: lean on accumulated experience as well, which Ketu holds in reserve.
The Moon in Ashwini: your Janma nakshatra
When the Moon is in Ashwini, this is your Janma nakshatra, your birth star: it shows how your mind reacts and what your emotions need. Here, feelings are quick and pass quickly. You need movement, novelty and the sense of being useful right away; waiting and routine weigh more heavily than effort.
The lever lies in direction: an Ashwini emotion that is well directed becomes an act that helps, an emotion left without a goal becomes restlessness. A journey, a walk, a concrete task often bring calm back. Look also at the house Ketu occupies in your chart: that is where your Moon draws its instinct from.
The Ascendant in Ashwini
With the Ascendant in Ashwini, your way of stepping into the world gallops: people see you as lively, direct, ready to help out or set off on an adventure. The first reflex is to act. Ketu becomes a key planet in your reading, alongside Mars, ruler of Aries: Ketu’s house shows where your drive takes you of its own accord.
An exact birth time is needed: the Ascendant crosses the whole nakshatra in a little under an hour, and each of its padas in about thirteen minutes.
The four padas of Ashwini
Each pada spans 3°20′ and gives a sign of the Navamsha, the D9. Ashwini starts the series at Aries, just like the zodiac itself:
- Pada 1 (0°–3°20′ Aries), Aries in the D9: drive in its purest form. A planet here is vargottama, in the same sign in the D1 and the D9, which strengthens it.
- Pada 2 (3°20′–6°40′ Aries), Taurus in the D9: speed settles; the talent for healing becomes a lasting, practical skill.
- Pada 3 (6°40′–10° Aries), Gemini in the D9: the quick mind, speech, learning; the messenger more than the rider.
- Pada 4 (10°–13°20′ Aries), Cancer in the D9: the drive serves those close to you; care becomes protection.
How do I know if my Moon is in Ashwini?
The nakshatra is read in the sidereal zodiac, with the exact time of birth: the Moon moves about 13° a day, roughly one nakshatra a day. The site does the calculation for you:
- Open the nakshatra calculator and enter your date, time and place of birth.
- The result gives the nakshatra of your Moon and its pada, its ruler and its deity, with a link to their pages.
- It also gives the nakshatra of your Ascendant, then that of each planet, Rahu and Ketu included.
- To see everything on a single wheel, dashas and divisional charts included, go to the Vedic birth chart.
Enter your date, time and place of birth: the site tells you whether your Moon, your Ascendant or one of your planets is in Ashwini, and in which pada.
