Ketu mahadasha: seven years to let go and return to the essential

The Ketu mahadasha lasts 7 years in the Vimshottari, between the seventeen years of Mercury and the twenty years of Venus. Ketu, the south node of the Moon, loosens what no longer serves and turns your gaze inward: research, spirituality, talents already acquired. A short and deep period that makes room. Its house and the ruler of its sign show where it plays out.

How long does the Ketu mahadasha last?

Seven years, like Mars’s; only the Sun’s period, six years, is shorter in the Vimshottari. It arrives at the end of the seventeen years of Mercury and opens the twenty years of Venus: after Mercury’s movement, Ketu clears the space, and Venus fills the room set free.

Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha and Mula, the first nakshatras of the three fire signs, from 0° to 13°20′ of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Since Ashwini opens the zodiac, the periods are listed starting with Ketu. A birth Moon in one of these three nakshatras opens life in his period, already under way.

Who is Ketu, and what does his mahadasha bring into play?

Ketu is the south node of the Moon, always exactly opposite Rahu. In the myth of the churning of the ocean, he is the body of the asura beheaded by Vishnu, whose head became Rahu: a body without a head, which acts without calculating. His name means “banner”, “bright sign”, and also refers to comets.

His period puts detachment in the spotlight: what no longer nourishes falls away, sometimes all at once. Tradition makes Ketu the significator of moksha, liberation, and of what was gained before this life: you rediscover abilities you thought forgotten, a surer intuition, a taste for research, precision and inner practices. A saying holds that Ketu acts like Mars: he cuts cleanly, with concentration.

Ketu mahadasha: effects by house

Like Rahu, Ketu rules no sign: he acts through the house he occupies, the ruler of the sign he sits in, the planets that join him and the ruler of his nakshatra. His house is the one where you detach: you already have a lot there, and you are looking for something else. In the 4th, ties to the home of origin loosen; in the 10th, a social role loses its appeal in favour of deeper work; in the 7th, partnership asks for more depth than appearance.

An example: for an Aries Ascendant, a Ketu in Pisces occupies the 12th house, the house of inner life and faraway places, and his dispositor, Jupiter, also rules the 9th, the house of teachers and faith. Tradition sees the 12th as a favourable place for Ketu: his period lends itself to a retreat, spiritual study, a stay abroad. Rahu, opposite, is in Virgo, in the 6th: daily work keeps your feet on the ground.

Ketu in the D9 and the D20: what the period ripens

The D9 shows what the period ripens in depth: look at Ketu’s sign and the state of his dispositor in the Navamsha. For spiritual life, often at the heart of these seven years, the D20 shows practice, devotion, the inner path.

A planet joined with Ketu in the D1 is stripped back during his period: Mercury becomes a researcher, Mars a precise craftsman, Jupiter more inward, the Moon more intuitive and more sensitive to the noise of the world. The lever is to give that planet something to study or a practice, rather than let it run idle.

The antardashas of the Ketu mahadasha

The seven years divide into nine sub-periods, most of them short: from 4 months and 6 days for Ketu–Sun to 1 year and 2 months for Ketu–Venus. Here they are in order:

  • Ketu–Ketu, 4 months and 27 days: the keynote is struck. A sorting out, a cut, a clearing that sets you free.
  • Ketu–Venus, 1 year and 2 months: the longest. Bonds, art and comfort are lived more simply; tastes grow finer.
  • Ketu–Sun, 4 months and 6 days: the shortest. Identity and authority recentre; the Sun shines less brightly, and more truly.
  • Ketu–Moon, 7 months: sensitivity rises. A calm home and a gentle routine soothe the Moon.
  • Ketu–Mars, 4 months and 27 days: two cutting energies. Concentration, precision, targeted effort; the ardour of Mars gains from aiming at a single target.
  • Ketu–Rahu, 1 year and 18 days: the axis of the nodes. Letting go and wanting compete for the stage; reconciling them is the work of the moment.
  • Ketu–Jupiter, 11 months and 6 days: a guide, a teaching, a study that gives meaning to detachment.
  • Ketu–Saturn, 1 year, 1 month and 9 days: sobriety. A discipline, deep work, a simple commitment kept.
  • Ketu–Mercury, 11 months and 27 days: analysis and writing. You put into words what the period has taught you, and Venus gets ready.

With sub-periods lasting a few months, the precision of the birth time counts twice over. The division into periods and sub-periods is explained in what is a dasha.

When does the Ketu mahadasha start?

It depends on the nakshatra of your Moon. In Ashwini, Magha or Mula, you are born in Ketu’s period; elsewhere, it arrives at the end of Mercury’s seventeen years. Lived in childhood, it often gives a more inward child, drawn to deep questions; in adulthood, it accompanies a change of course, a chosen retreat, a specialisation. Two worked examples:

  1. A Moon at 6°40′ sidereal Leo sits in the middle of Magha: 3 years and 6 months of Ketu remain at birth, then Venus runs from 3 years and 6 months to 23 years and 6 months.
  2. A Moon at 23°20′ Scorpio sits in the middle of Jyeshtha, a Mercury nakshatra: 8 years and 6 months of Mercury remain, then Ketu runs from 8 years and 6 months to 15 years and 6 months, on the threshold of adolescence.

Is the Ketu mahadasha difficult?

It can be disconcerting, because it takes away before it gives. Its points of vigilance: a feeling of emptiness, motivation that fades, the “what’s the point”, isolation, cuts that are too abrupt, an intuition you do not check.

Its levers: simplify your life of your own accord rather than suffer the sorting, choose a regular inner practice, specialise, finish what you have started, keep two or three faithful bonds, note your intuitions and test them against the facts. Ketu empties to make room: what remains after him is what truly matters.

How do I know if I am in my Ketu mahadasha?

With only seven years, Ketu’s period calls for precise dates: one hour of error in the birth time can move it by several months. The site calculates it from the exact position of your Moon.

  1. Enter your date, time and place of birth in the dasha calculator.
  2. Read the starting point: the nakshatra of your Moon and the share of its period already elapsed at birth.
  3. Find Ketu’s band on the timeline, then unfold its nine sub-periods and their dates.
  4. Open your Vedic birth chart to read on the wheel the house of Ketu and that of his dispositor.

Enter your birth details: the site dates your Ketu mahadasha and its nine sub-periods, and shows you when the next one opens.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Ketu mahadasha last?

Seven years, like Mars’s; only the Sun’s period, six years, is shorter. It follows Mercury’s seventeen years and comes before Venus’s twenty. If your Moon is in Ashwini, Magha or Mula, you are born in this period already under way, and only part of it remains for you.

Is the Ketu mahadasha bad?

No, it is stripped back. It takes away what no longer serves and turns you inward: research, spirituality, old talents coming back. It is disconcerting when you cling; it frees you when you simplify of your own accord. Its house and its dispositor show where the detachment plays out.

What does Ketu give in the 12th house?

The 12th house is the house of inner life, retreat and faraway places, and tradition sees it as a favourable place for Ketu, the significator of liberation. His period then lends itself to a spiritual practice, a retreat, a stay abroad, quiet and deep work.

Why is the Ketu mahadasha followed by the Venus one?

It is the fixed order of the Vimshottari, the order of the rulers of the nakshatras: Ashwini, ruled by Ketu, is followed by Bharani, ruled by Venus. This shift is one of the most contrasted in the cycle: seven years of stripping back, then twenty years turned towards bonds, taste and comfort.

Which is the shortest antardasha of the Ketu mahadasha?

Ketu–Sun, 4 months and 6 days. Ketu–Ketu and Ketu–Mars last 4 months and 27 days each. The longest is Ketu–Venus, 1 year and 2 months, followed by Ketu–Saturn (1 year, 1 month and 9 days) and Ketu–Rahu (1 year and 18 days).

Is Ketu the south node?

Yes. Ketu is the south node of the Moon, exactly opposite Rahu, the north node; the site calculates the mean nodes. Where Rahu pushes towards what you do not yet have, Ketu shows what you already possess and can detach from: their two houses form an axis to read together.
