Venus mahadasha: twenty years to love, to create and to choose what has value
The Venus mahadasha lasts 20 years: it is the longest of the nine great periods of the Vimshottari. It follows the seven years of Ketu and comes before the six years of the Sun. Venus, Shukra in Sanskrit, puts bonds, love, art, comfort and what holds value in your eyes in the spotlight. Its colour depends on its house, the houses it rules and its dignity in the D1 and the D9.
How long does the Venus mahadasha last?
Twenty years, one sixth of the 120-year cycle of the Vimshottari: no other great period is as long. It opens when the seven years of Ketu end and gives way to the six years of the Sun. The contrast is sharp: Ketu has cleared the stage, Venus fills it, then the Sun asks you to take your place on it.
The three nakshatras of Venus, Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha, all occupy the heart of a fire sign, from 13°20′ to 26°40′ of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. A birth Moon in one of them opens life in this period, already under way.
What happens during the Venus mahadasha?
Shukra means “the bright one”, “the clear one”. In myth, Shukra is the teacher of the asuras, the rivals of the gods, and the most learned among them. The period of Venus puts in the spotlight what connects and what pleases: love and partnership, friendship, beauty, the arts, music, the sweetness of home, the objects you choose with care.
Tradition makes Venus the kalatra karaka, the planet that signifies the spouse: these twenty years often bring a meeting, a marriage, a relationship that changes shape. Venus also signifies taste, pleasures, vehicles, diplomacy. In practice: an artistic talent taking shape, a career in beauty, care or hospitality, a home you make lovelier, a richer social life.
Venus mahadasha: effects by house
The house of Venus in the D1, counted in whole signs from the Ascendant, shows where the period plays out. In the 1st, charm and image; in the 2nd, family, speech, resources; in the 4th, home and comfort; in the 5th, love, creation, children; in the 7th, partnership and associations; in the 10th, a career turned towards beauty or relationships; in the 11th, friends and networks.
Rulerships refine the picture. For an Aries Ascendant, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, the 2nd and 7th houses: the period speaks of resources and partnership, often together. For Capricorn and Aquarius Ascendants, it becomes yogakaraka, the planet that rules both an angle and a trine: the 5th and 10th for Capricorn, the 4th and 9th for Aquarius. Its period then ranks among the most supportive of the chart.
Exalted, in own sign or debilitated Venus: dignity in the D1 and the D9
Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra, exalted in Pisces, debilitated in Virgo. Exalted, it loves with an almost unconditional generosity and a very sure taste. In Virgo, it loves by being of service and by perfecting: the lever is to accept what is imperfect, in yourself as in the other, and not to measure affection by effort.
For relationships, the Navamsha, the D9 is decisive: it is the chart of the bond. A Venus strong in the D9 keeps its promises, and when vargottama, in the same sign in the D1 and the D9, it gains in steadiness. For comfort and material joys, the D16 shows what the period brings.
The antardashas of the Venus mahadasha
The twenty years divide into nine sub-periods, from Venus–Venus to Venus–Ketu. The first is the longest sub-period in the whole Vimshottari:
- Venus–Venus, 3 years and 4 months: the theme of the twenty years settles. A relationship, an art, a setting for life take shape.
- Venus–Sun, 1 year: the wish to please meets the need to assert yourself. Harmony is no longer enough, you also need a place.
- Venus–Moon, 1 year and 8 months: home, the mother, emotions. A house you make gentle, a heightened sensitivity coloured by the Moon of your chart.
- Venus–Mars, 1 year and 2 months: desire and drive. A passion, a creative project carried with energy; Mars gives the courage to act.
- Venus–Rahu, 3 years: a craving for the new, the foreign, luxury, encounters outside the usual frames. The lever: tell dazzle from what truly has value.
- Venus–Jupiter, 2 years and 8 months: the teacher of the asuras crosses paths with the teacher of the gods. Pleasure looks for meaning: studies, teaching, children, generosity.
- Venus–Saturn, 3 years and 2 months: Venus and Saturn are friends. The commitment that lasts, the art that becomes a trade, comfort earned through work.
- Venus–Mercury, 2 years and 10 months: another natural friendship. Writing, drawing, selling, negotiating: the talents of Mercury serve the taste of Venus.
- Venus–Ketu, 1 year and 2 months: the last scene lightens the load. What was only appearance falls away, and the essential gets ready for the Sun’s period.
A useful landmark: from 7 years and 2 months to 16 years after the start of the period, Rahu, Jupiter and then Saturn follow one another. The heart of the twenty years is the most ambitious and the most constructive. The principle of sub-periods is explained in what is a dasha.
At what age does the Venus mahadasha start?
It all depends on the nakshatra of your Moon. If Venus rules it, you are born in its period; otherwise, Venus arrives at the end of Ketu’s seven years. Twenty years is often a whole era of life: childhood and youth, or the heart of adulthood. Two worked examples:
- A Moon at 20° sidereal Leo sits in the middle of Purva Phalguni: 10 years of Venus remain at birth, then the Sun runs from age 10 to 16, and the Moon from 16 to 26.
- A Moon at 10° Sagittarius has covered three quarters of Mula, a Ketu nakshatra: 1 year and 9 months of Ketu remain, then Venus runs from 1 year and 9 months to 21 years and 9 months, the whole of childhood and youth.
Is the Venus mahadasha always a happy one?
It is said to be one of the gentlest, and it often is. Its flip side is that of comfort: you settle in, you put things off, you seek pleasure rather than substance, you spend to fill a gap, you stay in a relationship out of habit or leave one out of boredom.
The levers: create rather than consume, choose quality over quantity, name what has value for you and give it your time, honour your commitments when the enthusiasm fades. A Venus in the 6th, 8th or 12th house invites you to love through service, transformation or retreat: sweetness takes a more inward road.
How do I know if I am in my Venus mahadasha?
