Nakshatra
Magha nakshatra: the throne, the ancestors and the authority that is handed down
Magha is the tenth nakshatra of the Vedic zodiac: it spans 0°00′ to 13°20′ sidereal Leo. Its name means “the great one”, its symbol is a throne, its deity the Pitris, the ancestors, and its ruler Ketu. It speaks of lineage, honour and an inherited authority you are meant to make fruitful. A Moon in Magha opens life in the period of Ketu.
What does Magha nakshatra mean?
Magha translates as “the great one”, “the mighty one”. It is the tenth of the 27 nakshatras and the first in sidereal Leo: it spans 0°00′ to 13°20′ Leo, entirely within the sign of the Sun. Its marker star is Regulus, the brightest in the constellation of Leo, whose Latin name means “the little king”.
Its symbol is a throne, sometimes a palanquin: the seat of someone who receives a charge because others held it before. Magha’s throne is not conquered, it is inherited, and it comes with obligations. Magha also gives its name to the lunar month of Magha, in January–February, when the full Moon passes in front of its stars.
Tradition counts it among the nakshatras of rakshasa temperament: independent, wholehearted, little inclined to bow to an imposed rule. Its nature is ugra, “intense”. Well handled, this intensity becomes loyalty and courage.
The Pitris, deity of Magha
Magha’s deity is collective: the Pitris, the “Fathers”, the ancestors honoured since the Vedas. They are not distant gods: they are the people you come from, who handed down a name, a land, a set of gestures. Their king is Yama, the keeper of the law, who presides over Bharani.
With the Pitris, Magha links a person to their chain: what you inherit and what you give back, a debt that tradition says is repaid by passing things on in turn. In a reading, this deity underlines the weight of roots and family memory, from the recipes handed down to the stories still being told.
Magha nakshatra ruling planet: Ketu and its mahadasha
Magha is ruled by Ketu, the south node of the Moon, like Ashwini and Mula. The three Ketu nakshatras each open a fire sign: Ashwini opens Aries, Magha Leo, Mula Sagittarius. Magha thus starts the second round of the nine nakshatra rulers.
Ketu is the past returning as knowledge: what the soul already knows, talents that seem innate, and a detachment that drives you towards the essential. On Magha’s throne, it gives an authority that does not seek honours for their own sake.
A Moon in Magha opens life in the Ketu mahadasha, which lasts 7 years and is already under way at birth. An example: a Moon at 5° Leo has covered 5° of Magha’s 13°20′, or 37.5% of the way; 62.5% of the 7 years remains, about 4 years and 4 and a half months of Ketu. Then come the 20 years of Venus, followed by the 6 years of the Sun. The dasha calculator gives the exact dates.
Magha nakshatra characteristics: strengths and challenges
Magha gives bearing: its natives know how to take their place and carry a responsibility in front of a group. Each gift has its flip side, and each flip side becomes a lever as soon as you face it:
- A sense of heritage: family memory, a taste for tradition, loyalty to what was handed down. The lever: keep the spirit of a heritage without repeating all its forms.
- Natural authority: people turn to you when a decision has to be made. The lever: ground it in service rather than in rank.
- Dignity: a keen sense of respect, given and expected. The lever: don’t take a remark for an insult, and keep the largesse of the king who forgives.
- A taste for prestige: titles, fine objects, places steeped in history. The lever: make them tools for passing things on rather than proofs.
Moon in Magha nakshatra: your Janma nakshatra
If your Moon is in Magha, it is your Janma nakshatra, your birth star. Your emotions run through belonging: you need to know where you come from, to be recognised for what you carry, to feel that your place is respected.
This Moon is fed by family rituals and the elders’ stories. It is hurt more quickly by a lack of consideration than by a real difficulty. Its lever: give itself the recognition it expects from others, and choose from its heritage what helps it grow.
Magha nakshatra ascendant
With the Ascendant in Magha, you walk into a room the way one takes a seat that was waiting: an upright posture, a presence that gets noticed. People readily grant you authority, without your even asking. The Sun rules the Ascendant, Ketu the nakshatra: their houses show where your energy unfolds (see the chart ruler).
The lever of this Ascendant: turn presence into service, for a group, a family, an institution, not just for your own image. The exact time is needed: the Ascendant stays only a little under an hour in Magha, and about thirteen minutes in each of its padas.
Magha nakshatra padas and their D9 signs
Each pada of Magha spans 3°20′ and corresponds to a sign of the Navamsha, the D9, from Aries to Cancer: the throne comes in four ways of carrying a heritage.
- Pada 1, 0°00′ to 3°20′ Leo, Aries in the D9: the heir who opens the way. Courage, initiative, the wish to found something in turn.
- Pada 2, 3°20′ to 6°40′ Leo, Taurus in the D9: the keeper of the estate. Patience, a sense of value, a taste for things that last.
- Pada 3, 6°40′ to 10°00′ Leo, Gemini in the D9: the family storyteller. Passes things on through speech, writing, teaching.
- Pada 4, 10°00′ to 13°20′ Leo, Cancer in the D9: the protector of the clan. Tenderness, memory, a strong attachment to home and to one’s own.
The very first degrees of Leo, where they meet the end of Ashlesha, form what tradition calls a gandanta, a “knot” between a water sign and a fire sign. A planet placed there links two worlds, the private and the public: it takes time to find its footing, then holds both together.
How do I know if I was born in Magha?
Magha is read in the sidereal zodiac, shifted by about 24° from the Western one: they are two different readings of the sky (see tropical or sidereal). The time matters: the Moon moves half a degree an hour, and a Moon near 13° Leo can tip over into Purva Phalguni.
- Open the nakshatra calculator and enter your date, time and place of birth.
- Read the Moon’s nakshatra and its pada: if it is Magha, the result links to this page and to the page of the Pitris.
- Then look at the Ascendant and each planet: a Sun or a Mars in Magha also takes on the colour of the throne.
- To see nakshatras, dashas and karakas together, open your Vedic birth chart.
