Nakshatra deity
The Pitris: the ancestors, deity of Magha nakshatra
The Pitris, the “Fathers”, are the ancestors honoured in the Vedas: the people we descend from, present through everything they handed down. They preside over Magha, the tenth nakshatra, from 0°00′ to 13°20′ sidereal Leo. In a chart, they speak of lineage, of memory and of a joyful debt, the one you repay by passing things on in turn.
Who are the Pitris in the Vedas?
The Sanskrit word pitri means “father”; in the plural, the Pitris are the ancestors of the lineage, those who lived before us and watch over their descendants. The Rigveda devotes a whole hymn to them, in its tenth book: they are invited to come and sit on the sacred grass of the offering and receive their share.
Their king is Yama, the keeper of the law, deity of Bharani. The texts distinguish several families of Pitris, such as the Barhishads, “those who sit on the sacred grass”. Their direction is the south, and the word that accompanies their offerings is not svaha, the one used for the gods, but svadha, reserved for them.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says: “Among the Pitris, I am Aryaman”. This is why Aryaman, the god of alliances who presides over Uttara Phalguni, is presented as the foremost of the ancestors: lineage and alliance go hand in hand.
How are the ancestors honoured? Shraddha and tarpana
The worship of the Pitris is one of the oldest and most living traditions in India. The shraddha, whose name derives from the word for “faith”, offers the ancestors balls of rice, the pindas, and water. The tarpana pours water for them, often mixed with sesame seeds, while their names are spoken.
Each year, a fortnight is devoted to them, the Pitru Paksha, during the waning Moon of September or October. The new Moon of every month, amavasya, is also dedicated to them: it is the day for remembering the people you come from.
The debt to the ancestors
A Vedic text says that everyone is born with three debts: to the gods, to the sages who handed down knowledge, and to the ancestors. The debt to the Pitris, pitri rina, is repaid according to tradition through one’s descendants; it is also understood more broadly: raising, teaching, keeping alive what you received.
It is a liberating idea. You are not only the product of your family history, you are its next chapter: what was heavy can be lightened, what was beautiful can be amplified. The Pitris do not ask you to repeat their lives, but to extend them.
The Pitris and Magha nakshatra
The Pitris preside over Magha, from 0°00′ to 13°20′ sidereal Leo, ruled by Ketu and symbolised by a throne. The ancestors’ throne is an inheritance: you sit on it because others held it before you. Magha thus gives a sense of lineage, of honour, of inherited authority and of traditions kept alive.
Ketu, its ruler, strengthens this tie to the past: it speaks of what the soul already knows, of talents that seem to come from far away. A Moon in Magha opens life in the Ketu mahadasha, a 7-year period turned towards roots and the essential.
How the energy of the Pitris shows in a chart
It comes through as soon as a key point of the chart sits in Magha, and each case has its own colour. The nakshatra calculator tells you which of your points fall there:
- The Moon in Magha: sensitivity is fed by belonging. A need to know where you come from, attachment to family rituals, loyalty to your own.
- The Ascendant in Magha: a dignified presence, natural authority, the feeling of representing something larger than yourself.
- The Sun in Magha: it is in its own sign, Leo; the sense of rank and the wish to do honour to one’s name are strengthened.
- Another planet in Magha: it takes on the colour of the lineage. Venus loves objects with a history there, Mercury family stories, Mars standing up for its own.
To go further, the D12, the chart of parents, shows what you received from your direct forebears: read alongside Magha, it sheds light on how a heritage is passed on in your life.
A simple practice to honour the Pitris
Tradition offers very simple gestures, within everyone’s reach, with nothing to buy and nothing imposed. The oldest: at the new Moon, pour a little water while thinking of the people you come from, and say their names quietly, as far back as you know them.
Another, more intimate gesture: choose one quality of an ancestor, their patience, their courage, their humour, and consciously live it for a day. That is the deep meaning of honouring the Pitris: memory does not only look back, it acts.
The site calculates the nakshatra of your Moon, your Ascendant and each planet: you will know whether Magha, the nakshatra of the Pitris, holds a place in your chart.
