Nakshatra deity
Aryaman: the god of alliances and of the given word, deity of Uttara Phalguni
Aryaman is one of the oldest Adityas, the sons of Aditi, often invoked with Mitra and Varuna. God of alliances, hospitality and marriage, he watches over the bonds we choose and keep. He presides over Uttara Phalguni, from 26°40′ Leo to 10°00′ Virgo in the sidereal zodiac: in a chart, he gives a sense of commitment.
Who is Aryaman in the Vedas?
Aryaman is one of the six Adityas that a hymn of the Rigveda names together, with Mitra, Bhaga, Varuna, Daksha and Amsha. A son of Aditi, he forms with Mitra and Varuna a triad often invoked as one: Varuna keeps the order of the world, Mitra the pact of friendship, Aryaman the customs that bind families and communities together.
As a common noun, aryaman means the companion, the close friend, and more precisely the friend who goes to ask for a young woman’s hand on behalf of another. The god keeps the full sense of the word: he is the one who introduces, who recommends, who brings the stranger into the circle and the friend into the family.
He is also the god of hospitality and of gifts given according to custom: welcoming the guest, the present that seals an agreement, the word given before witnesses. Where Aryaman reigns, everyone knows what they owe to others, and what others owe to them.
Aryaman, marriage and the ancestors
In the wedding hymn of the Rigveda, Aryaman is named with Bhaga and Savitar among the gods who give the bride to the groom to found a household, and wedding rites invoke him before the fire. If Bhaga brings the joy of the union, Aryaman guarantees that it holds: he is the divine witness of the commitment.
The Bhagavad Gita adds another facet. There Krishna says: “Among the Pitris, I am Aryaman”. The god of alliances is therefore also the foremost of the ancestors: he links the living to their lineage just as he links two families through a marriage. He is a bridge between the Pitris, deity of Magha, and the world of alliances of Uttara Phalguni.
The attributes of Aryaman
His attributes are qualities of connection, and each one has a very concrete expression in everyday life:
- Alliance: marriages, partnerships, pacts between families and between groups.
- Hospitality: welcoming the guest, making room for them, honouring whoever comes from afar.
- The word that is kept: the promise that binds, the contract you honour even when it costs you.
- Patronage: supporting, recommending, opening a door for someone who deserves it.
- Noble conduct: the name Aryaman shares its root with arya, “noble”, in the sense of someone who behaves with dignity.
Aryaman and Uttara Phalguni nakshatra
Aryaman presides over Uttara Phalguni, the twelfth nakshatra, from 26°40′ Leo to 10°00′ sidereal Virgo, ruled by the Sun and symbolised by the back legs of a bed, the ones that carry the weight. It follows Purva Phalguni, Bhaga’s nakshatra: after the meeting comes the commitment.
The Sun, ruler of the nakshatra, gives Aryaman his uprightness: a sense of honour that keeps promises. Natives of this nakshatra often feel it as a duty of loyalty towards those who once opened a door for them. A Moon in Uttara Phalguni starts life in the Sun mahadasha, a 6-year period turned towards the place you take and the responsibility you shoulder.
How Aryaman’s energy shows in a chart
Aryaman speaks as soon as a key point of the chart sits in Uttara Phalguni. The nakshatra calculator shows you which ones:
- The Moon in Uttara Phalguni: security comes from clear, reliable bonds, and from the need to matter to someone. The lever: let yourself be helped in turn.
- The Ascendant in Uttara Phalguni: a composed bearing that inspires trust; people hand you responsibilities. The lever: don’t promise more than you can keep.
- The Sun in Uttara Phalguni: the Sun is in its own nakshatra; it gives a protective leadership, in the service of a group.
- Venus, or the ruler of the 7th house, in Uttara Phalguni: love is lived as a commitment, and loyalty becomes a central value.
A simple practice inspired by Aryaman
Aryaman is honoured through gestures of connection. Keep a promise you had left hanging; welcome someone to your table; introduce two people who would gain from knowing each other. Each of these gestures is a small alliance, exactly what this god protects.
Around you, you will recognise the Uttara Phalguni natives: they are often the ones who organise, who connect, who remember what was agreed. Aryaman gives them this constancy; they pass it on to the people they bring together.
