Uttara Phalguni nakshatra: commitment, loyal friendship and the word that is kept

What does Uttara Phalguni mean?

Uttara means “latter”, “the following one”: Uttara Phalguni extends Purva Phalguni, and the two form the pair that gives its name to the month of Phalguna. The twelfth of the 27 nakshatras, it begins at 26°40′ Leo and ends at 10°00′ Virgo: its first pada is in Leo, the other three in Virgo.

Its main star is Denebola, whose Arabic name refers to the lion’s tail. Its symbol is the back of a bed: the legs that carry the weight, the ones you don’t see but without which nothing holds. Where Purva Phalguni celebrates the meeting, Uttara Phalguni sets up the household.

Tradition counts it among the dhruva nakshatras, the “fixed” ones: those chosen to lay a foundation, move into a home, unite, sign whatever needs to last. Its temperament is manushya, “human”: turned towards society, family, the rules that make living together possible.

Aryaman, deity of Uttara Phalguni

Aryaman is one of the oldest Adityas, often invoked with Mitra and Varuna. His name means the companion, the close friend, the one who goes to ask for a young woman’s hand on behalf of another: he is the god of alliances, of hospitality, of the customs that make a word reliable. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says: “Among the Pitris, I am Aryaman”, which makes him the foremost of the ancestors.

Under Aryaman, Uttara Phalguni speaks of the beauty of a bond you choose and keep up: marriage, partnership, friendship, sponsorship. Its natives are often the ones who introduce people to each other, who recommend, who keep the promises made in a group’s name.
