Nakshatra
Ashlesha nakshatra: the serpent’s embrace and the art of reading people
Ashlesha is the ninth nakshatra, from 16°40′ to 30° Cancer sidereal. Its name means “the embrace”, “the one who entwines”. Ruled by Mercury and presided over by the Nagas, the divine serpents, it gives depth, an intuition that sees through appearances and a strategic intelligence. A Moon in Ashlesha opens life in the Mercury mahadasha.
Ashlesha nakshatra meaning
Ashlesha comes from a Sanskrit verb meaning “to embrace”, “to cling”, “to entwine”: it is the embrace, that of the coiling serpent. The ninth of the 27 nakshatras, it occupies the last 13°20′ of Cancer, from 16°40′ to 30° in the sidereal zodiac, right after Pushya.
Its stars trace the head of Hydra, the great water snake of the sky. Where Pushya nourishes in broad daylight, Ashlesha works beneath the surface: it senses currents, the unspoken, the balance of power. It is a nakshatra of intimate knowledge, powerful when used with awareness.
Ashlesha: the coiled serpent and the Nagas
Its symbol is the coiled serpent. It speaks at once of concentrated force, ready to uncoil, and of the art of biding one’s time. The serpent also sheds its skin: it leaves its old skin behind without leaving its body, an image of transformation that Ashlesha natives know well.
Its deities are the Nagas, the divine serpents the Vedic texts call Sarpa: guardians of the waters, the depths and hidden treasures, keepers of secret knowledge. Ashlesha belongs to the rakshasa gana, the most instinctive temperament, unafraid of the shadows; its nature is sharp (tikshna), keen, made to cut through knots. Its animal (yoni) is the cat, like that of Punarvasu.
Mercury, ruler of Ashlesha
Ashlesha is ruled by Mercury, the planet of intelligence, words and analysis. In the Moon’s sign, this Mercury thinks with emotion: it understands people from the inside, guesses what they keep quiet and finds the sentence that lands. Well used, it is the gift of the negotiator, the researcher, the person who walks with others through their shadowed places.
A Moon in Ashlesha begins life in the Mercury mahadasha, which lasts 17 years and is already under way according to the distance the Moon has covered. A Moon at 20° Cancer has travelled 3°20′ into the nakshatra, a quarter of it: three quarters of the 17 years remain, so 12 years and 9 months of Mercury after birth. The dasha calculator gives the exact dates.
Ashlesha gifts and pitfalls
Ashlesha gives depth: an intuition that sees through facades, a faithful memory of bonds, complete loyalty to those it has chosen, an intelligence that sees several moves ahead. In many traditions, the serpent carries both the venom and the remedy: Ashlesha knows how to turn difficult knowledge into help.
Its pitfalls are the excesses of that gift, and each has its lever:
- Holding too tight: the embrace becomes a grip, attachment becomes control. The lever: hold the hand without crushing it, leave the other person room to breathe.
- Suspicion: reading beneath the surface so much that you start seeing traps everywhere. The lever: test your intuitions against the facts before drawing conclusions.
- Words that sting: Mercury gives a skilful, sometimes sharp tongue. The lever: put that gift at the service of the truth that repairs rather than the one that wounds.
- Secrecy that isolates: protecting yourself by showing nothing. The lever: choose two or three people you can tell everything to.
Moon in Ashlesha
As a Janma nakshatra, Ashlesha gives a very fine sensitivity to atmospheres and people: this Moon picks up everything, often before anyone has spoken. It needs true intimacy and trust that has been tested; when it feels threatened, it coils in on itself long enough to understand.
The Moon is at home in Cancer, but Mercury analyses every emotion: you think what you feel, sometimes instead of living it. Its lever: name out loud what is happening inside rather than brooding over it, and let the shedding happen when a chapter is over.
Ashlesha Ascendant
An Ascendant between 16°40′ and 30° Cancer sidereal gives a reserved manner and a gaze that observes before opening up. The person attracts without trying to please, intrigues, quickly perceives intentions. The Moon, chart ruler, and Mercury, ruler of the nakshatra, are the two planets to follow: their houses show where your power of understanding is focused.
The last pada touches the border between Cancer and Leo: the Ascendant changes nakshatra and sign there within a few minutes, hence the importance of an exact birth time.
The four padas of Ashlesha
Each 3°20′ pada corresponds to a sign of the Navamsha, the D9, the chart of inner maturity and partnership. Those of Ashlesha run from Sagittarius to Pisces:
- Pada 1 (16°40′–20° Cancer), Sagittarius in the D9: depth put at the service of meaning; looking for the truth behind beliefs.
- Pada 2 (20°–23°20′ Cancer), Capricorn in the D9: patient strategy, ambition, a gift for organising over the long run.
- Pada 3 (23°20′–26°40′ Cancer), Aquarius in the D9: original intelligence, research, an understanding of groups and networks.
- Pada 4 (26°40′–30° Cancer), Pisces in the D9: intuition that borders on clairvoyance, compassion, a feel for mystery. Mars meets its deepest debilitation here, at 28° Cancer: its lever is strategy rather than assault.
The last degrees of Ashlesha and the first of Magha form a gandanta, a knot where the water of Cancer becomes the fire of Leo. A Moon or a planet placed there lives through clear-cut passages: clean endings, wholehearted renewals. It is a zone of transformation, to be read with care and without fear.
How do I know if Ashlesha is in my chart?
The Calculate my Vedic chart page brings everything together in one place: the D1 wheel, the list of twenty divisional charts, and checkboxes to show the nakshatras, the dashas and the karakas, each explained by a small “i” bubble. By showing the nakshatras, you see whether the Moon, the Ascendant or a planet sits in Ashlesha.
To go straight to the point, the nakshatra calculator gives the nakshatra and pada of the Moon, with Mercury as ruler and the Nagas as deity if it is Ashlesha, then the nakshatra of the Ascendant and that of each planet. In both cases, the exact time of birth is required.
Enter your exact time of birth: the calculator tells you whether your Moon, your Ascendant or a planet sits in Ashlesha, and in which pada.
