Agni, deity of Krittika: the fire that purifies and carries offerings

Agni is the fire of the Vedas, the god who receives offerings and carries them to the other gods. He presides over Krittika, the nakshatra of the Pleiades (26°40′ Aries to 10° sidereal Taurus), ruled by the Sun, and shares with Indra the presidency of Vishakha. In a chart, he gives clarity, discernment and the power to transform.

Who is Agni in the Vedas?

Agni is the first word of the Rig Veda: the collection opens with a hymn invoking him as the priest placed in front, the one who leads the sacrifice. Some two hundred hymns are devoted to him, which makes him, together with Indra, the most celebrated deity of the collection. His name simply means “fire”, from the same family as the Latin ignis.

Agni is the go-between: what is poured into the flame rises to the gods, and he is the one who carries it. He is said to be present on three levels, the hearth fire on earth, lightning in the atmosphere, the sun in the sky. He is the guest of every home, the one rekindled every day, and the witness of commitments: on their wedding day, the couple walk their rounds around him.

The stories of Agni

His stories are all about passage: whatever Agni touches changes state.

  • Agni and the Krittikas: in several stories, Agni carries the seed from which Skanda, the young warrior god, is born. The six Krittikas, the Pleiades, nurse him, and he takes from them the name Kartikeya.
  • Svaha: his wife, whose name is spoken with every offering poured into the fire; the word still closes offering formulas today.
  • Agni in hiding: a hymn of the Rig Veda tells how Agni, weary of his task, hides in the waters and in the plants. The gods find him and persuade him to take his place again, promising him his share of every offering. Even fire needs reminding why it burns.

The attributes of Agni

Agni is depicted red as the flame, with seven tongues of fire, riding a ram. He guards the south-east, still called agneya, “Agni’s direction”. His tongues lick the offering and transform it: nothing stays as it was after passing through him. His mount echoes Krittika’s place, which begins in sidereal Aries.

Agni and Krittika: the blade and the flame

Agni presides over Krittika, the third nakshatra, that of the Pleiades. He gives it its double face: the fire that cuts through falsehood, represented by the blade, and the fire that cooks, nourishes and warms, like the Krittikas watching over Skanda. The Sun, ruler of the nakshatra, adds clarity and authority: Krittika says what is, and says it to your face.

In South India, the festival of Karthigai Deepam is celebrated on the day the Moon passes through Krittika, in the month that bears its name: rows of small lamps are lit on the evening the Moon joins the Pleiades. The Sun mahadasha, six years at most, opens the life of those whose Moon is in Krittika.

Agni and Vishakha, with Indra

Agni also presides, together with Indra, over Vishakha nakshatra, from 20° Libra to 3°20′ sidereal Scorpio, ruled by Jupiter. The Rig Veda often invokes the two gods together, under the name Indragni: the flame and the thunderbolt, the fire that purifies and the strength that conquers. In Vishakha, Agni’s fire becomes that of the goal pursued: ambition, perseverance, victory at the end of the effort.

The Indra-Agni page explores this pair. Indra, alone, presides over Jyeshtha, the nakshatra of the eldest and of responsibility. From Krittika to Jyeshtha, you thus move from fire alone to fire joined with the thunderbolt, then to the thunderbolt alone: purity, ambition, command.

Agni in your chart

Agni’s energy shows first in whatever occupies Krittika, then in whatever occupies Vishakha:

  • The Moon in Krittika: a frank sensitivity that needs truth and fiercely protects its own.
  • The Ascendant in Krittika: a clear-cut, dignified presence that clarifies every situation it enters.
  • The Sun in Krittika: the ruler in its own nakshatra; natural authority, a keen sense of honour.
  • A planet in Vishakha: Agni works there with Indra; the same flame, put to the service of a long-term goal.

The nakshatra calculator tells you whether one of your planets is in Krittika or Vishakha, with its pada and a link to its page.

A simple practice: watching the flame

Vedic tradition tends the fire every day, at sunrise and sunset. Without taking up a rite, you can keep the spirit of the gesture: light a candle or a lamp at dusk, watch it for a minute in silence, and name one thing you want to let burn away, a habit, a grievance, a hesitation.

Agni does not destroy for the sake of destroying: he turns what is entrusted to him into light and warmth. What you hand over to him in the evening can become, the next day, a clearer decision.

Frequently asked questions

Which nakshatras does Agni preside over?

Agni presides over Krittika, the nakshatra of the Pleiades, from 26°40′ Aries to 10° sidereal Taurus, ruled by the Sun. He also shares with Indra the presidency of Vishakha, from 20° Libra to 3°20′ sidereal Scorpio, ruled by Jupiter. Indra, alone, presides over Jyeshtha.

Who is Agni in the Vedic tradition?

He is the god of fire, the first invoked in the Rig Veda and one of the most celebrated. He receives offerings and carries them to the gods, watches over every hearth and serves as witness to commitments, marriage above all. He is said to be present on earth as fire, in the atmosphere as lightning and in the sky as the sun.

Why is Agni linked to the Pleiades?

The Pleiades are the Krittikas, the six nurses of Skanda. In several stories, Agni carries the seed from which this young god is born, and the Krittikas then raise him. Krittika nakshatra, that of the Pleiades, therefore has Agni as its deity.

What are Agni’s attributes?

He is red as the flame, has seven tongues of fire, rides a ram and guards the south-east. His wife is Svaha, whose name accompanies every offering poured into the fire.

How does Agni’s energy show in a chart?

Through the planets placed in Krittika, first of all the Moon and the Ascendant: clarity, frankness, a taste for sorting and purifying, a protective instinct. A planet in Vishakha receives Agni’s fire joined with Indra’s strength: ambition and perseverance.
