Vishakha, the forked nakshatra: ambition that lasts until the harvest

Vishakha is the sixteenth nakshatra: it runs from 20°00′ Libra to 3°20′ sidereal Scorpio, straddling two signs, just as its name announces (“the forked one”, “the one with two branches”). Ruled by Jupiter and presided over by Indra-Agni, it gives ambition aimed at a goal and the perseverance that holds on until the harvest. A Moon in Vishakha opens life in the Jupiter mahadasha.

Vishakha nakshatra meaning

The Sanskrit name Vishakha means “forked”, “with spreading branches” (vi, apart; shakha, branch). It is the sixteenth of the 27 nakshatras: it covers 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac, from 20°00′ Libra to 3°20′ Scorpio. Three padas in Libra, the fourth in Scorpio: the nakshatra is shared between the sign of Venus, which seeks agreement, and the sign of Mars, which goes to the bottom of things.

It gave its name to a month of the Indian calendar, Vaishakha (April–May), the month whose full Moon shines close to it: the full Moon of Vesak, the festival of the Buddha. In the sequence of the 27 nakshatras, Vishakha follows Swati, the shoot the wind bends without breaking, and comes before Anuradha, loyal friendship.

Vishakha symbol and deity

Its symbol is a triumphal arch decorated with leaves (torana), the gateway raised to welcome the victor; it is also given the potter’s wheel, which shapes without respite. Vishakha does not settle for beginning: it goes all the way to the finishing gate.

Its deity is twofold: Indra-Agni, the king of the gods and the sacred fire, invoked together in the Rig Veda. Indra brings the will that conquers, Agni the flame that lights up and purifies: their alliance makes Vishakha the nakshatra of the goal pursued with ardour. The Indra-Agni page tells the story of this divine pair; Agni also presides over Krittika, and Indra alone presides over Jyeshtha, two mansions further on.

Tradition places Vishakha among the nakshatras of the rakshasa gana (the fierce temperament, literally “demon”: the one who does not let anyone push it around), of mixed nature (mishra, both sharp and gentle), with the tigress as its animal (yoni). Nothing dark about it: this is the energy of someone who defends what they aim for.

Vishakha ruling planet: which mahadasha?

The ruler of Vishakha is Jupiter, the planet of knowledge, growth and meaning. It gives Vishakha’s ambition a direction: you do not win for the sake of winning, but for a cause, a faith, an ideal to pass on. In your chart, its house shows where the drive comes from; its sign and dignity show whether it backs that drive at full strength.

A birth with the Moon in Vishakha begins life in the Jupiter mahadasha, sixteen years in all, already under way in proportion to the distance the Moon had covered. An example: a Moon at 0° Scorpio, at the threshold of the fourth pada, has travelled 10° of 13°20′, three quarters; twelve of Jupiter’s sixteen years have elapsed, and life opens on 4 years of Jupiter before Saturn’s nineteen. The dasha calculator gives these dates for your chart.

Vishakha qualities and challenges turned into levers

Vishakha is the nakshatra of the objective: its gifts and its pitfalls spring from the same source, an energy stretched towards a goal.

  • Perseverance: Vishakha knows how to wait for the harvest. It ploughs for a long time, without applause, its eyes on the triumphal arch.
  • Ambition that carries others along: it rallies people around a project, a cause, a competition to win, and makes others want to join in.
  • Fervour: Agni’s flame makes it an intense nature, able to devote itself entirely to an idea, a practice, a person.
  • Lever: choose one branch. The fork can scatter you between two paths, two desires. Naming the main goal and letting the other wait its turn gives the drive back its full force.
  • Lever: emulation rather than rivalry. Indra’s competitive spirit can turn into comparison. Measuring yourself against your own progress of yesterday turns rivalry into an engine.

Moon in Vishakha nakshatra: what this Janma nakshatra says

With the Moon in Vishakha, your birth nakshatra (Janma nakshatra), the mind needs a horizon. Without a goal, it gets restless; with one, it becomes rarely tenacious. The emotions are lively, loyal, sometimes impatient: the gap between what is and what could be is what sets you in motion.

In the first three padas, the Moon is in Libra: the need for fairness colours ambition, often lived as a pair or for a shared cause. In the fourth, it moves into Scorpio, its sign of debilitation (neecha), whose lowest point, 3° Scorpio, falls precisely in this pada. The lever is remarkable: this pada corresponds to Cancer in the D9, the Moon’s own sign, where it regains inwardly the strength the D1 takes away. A deep sensitivity, which grows by being expressed.

Vishakha ascendant

With the Ascendant in Vishakha (Lagna nakshatra), your whole bearing announces a project: people see you arrive with an intention, a focused energy, a way of entering a room as if walking through a gate. You are readily entrusted with a mission: you seem to know where you are going.

Jupiter, ruler of the nakshatra, then becomes a key planet, to be read alongside the chart ruler: its house shows the field where your ambition plays out first (career in the 10th house, knowledge in the 9th, partnership in the 7th). The Ascendant crosses Vishakha in under an hour on average: without an exact birth time, there is no way to place it.

Vishakha padas: the four quarters

Each pada spans 3°20′ and corresponds to a sign of the Navamsha, the D9, which gives the nakshatra its inner shade. For Vishakha, these are the first four signs of the zodiac:

  • Pada 1 (20°00′–23°20′ Libra, Aries in the D9): pure drive. Ambition starts fast, loves a challenge and opens new projects; lever: keep going once the first enthusiasm fades.
  • Pada 2 (23°20′–26°40′ Libra, Taurus in the D9): steadiness. The goal is built stone by stone, with a taste for the concrete and the beautiful; here Vishakha becomes patient.
  • Pada 3 (26°40′–30°00′ Libra, Gemini in the D9): the word. You win through argument, negotiation, writing, study; lever: do not let curiosity scatter.
  • Pada 4 (0°00′–3°20′ Scorpio, Cancer in the D9): protective fervour. Ambition serves a family, a clan, a place of belonging; Jupiter is exalted here in the D9, the Moon in its own sign.

How do I know if my Moon is in Vishakha?

Vishakha is read in the sidereal zodiac, shifted by about 24° from the Western zodiac: two different readings of the sky (see tropical or sidereal). Only a sidereal calculation can place it.

  1. Open the nakshatra calculator and enter your date, your exact time and your place of birth.
  2. Read first the nakshatra of your Moon, with its pada, its ruler and its deity.
  3. Then look at the nakshatra of your Ascendant, and at that of each planet: a planet in Vishakha also carries the mark of Indra-Agni.
  4. For the full picture, the Vedic birth chart brings the wheel, the nakshatras and the dashas together on one page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vishakha in Libra or Scorpio?

Both: Vishakha runs from 20°00′ Libra to 3°20′ sidereal Scorpio. Its first three padas are in Libra, the fourth in Scorpio. A planet in Vishakha is therefore read first in its sign, Libra or Scorpio, then with the shade of the nakshatra and of its pada.

What is the deity of Vishakha?

Indra-Agni, the twofold deity formed by the king of the gods and the sacred fire, invoked together in the Rig Veda. Indra gives the will to conquer, Agni the flame that lights up and purifies: together, they make Vishakha the nakshatra of the goal pursued with ardour.

Which planet rules Vishakha?

Jupiter. A birth with the Moon in Vishakha therefore begins in the Jupiter mahadasha, sixteen years long, part of which has already elapsed at birth depending on the exact position of the Moon. Then come Saturn, nineteen years, and Mercury, seventeen years.

Is Vishakha a rakshasa nakshatra?

Yes, tradition classes it in the rakshasa gana, the fiercest of the three temperaments (with deva and manushya). There is nothing negative about it: it is the energy of someone who defends their goals and does not give up easily. The gana is used mainly to compare two charts.

What is the symbol of Vishakha?

A triumphal arch decorated with leaves, the gateway raised to welcome the victor, and sometimes the potter’s wheel. Both express the same quality: seeing through what you have started, and giving shape to your ambition through sheer constancy.

What does a Moon in Vishakha pada 4 mean?

The Moon is in Scorpio there, its sign of debilitation, around the lowest point of 3° Scorpio; but this pada corresponds to Cancer in the D9, its own sign. The sensitivity is deep and protective, and it comes into its full strength when it is expressed and placed at the service of the people you love.
