Nakshatra

Anuradha, the nakshatra of loyal friendship: the lotus that blooms in Scorpio

Anuradha is the seventeenth nakshatra: it runs from 3°20′ to 16°40′ sidereal Scorpio. Its name means “after Radha”, the success that follows success. Ruled by Saturn and presided over by Mitra, the god of friendship and of the given word, it brings loyalty, a gift for bringing people together and a depth that lasts. A Moon in Anuradha opens life in the Saturn mahadasha.

Anuradha nakshatra meaning

Anuradha is made of anu, “after, following”, and Radha, the old name of Vishakha, which means “success”. Anuradha is thus “the one that follows Radha”: the success that comes after, the kind that is not snatched in one go but built over time, and with others. It covers 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac, from 3°20′ to 16°40′ Scorpio, entirely within the sign of Mars.

It is the seventeenth of the 27 nakshatras. It follows Vishakha, which aims at a goal, and comes before Jyeshtha, which carries the responsibility of the eldest. Between ambition and authority, Anuradha brings what both lack: allies.

Anuradha symbol and deity

Its symbol is the lotus, the flower that opens above murky water without keeping any trace of it. The image suits a Scorpio nakshatra: Anuradha passes through the depths, the crises, the secrets, and comes out of them with a kind of purity.

Its deity is Mitra, one of the Adityas, the sons of Aditi. His name means “friend” and also “pact”: he watches over the given word, agreements, hospitality, everything that binds people together through trust. In the Rig Veda, he forms a pair with Varuna, the keeper of order; the Mitra page tells his story. To Anuradha, he gives the gift of friendship: bonds that last through the years, promises kept even when they cost something.

Tradition places Anuradha in the deva gana (the “divine” temperament, turned towards harmony), of soft nature (mridu), with the doe as its animal (yoni). Softness and Scorpio do not contradict each other: Anuradha’s tenderness is the kind that remains once the storm has passed.

Anuradha ruling planet: which mahadasha?

The ruler of Anuradha is Saturn, the planet of time, effort and constancy. It gives Mitra’s friendship a backbone: a loyalty that does not depend on mood, a discipline in the service of a group, the patience of those who know that the fruits come late and that they last. Saturn slows things down to make them hold.

A birth with the Moon in Anuradha begins in the Saturn mahadasha, nineteen years long, already under way at birth. Example: a Moon at 10° Scorpio has travelled 6°40′ of Anuradha’s 13°20′, exactly half; half of the nineteen years has elapsed, and life opens on 9 years and 6 months of Saturn, before Mercury’s seventeen. The dasha calculator dates these periods for your chart.

Anuradha qualities and challenges turned into levers

Anuradha is the nakshatra of the bond that holds. Its strength is relational, but it rests on great inner demands.

  • Loyalty: an Anuradha friend stays. They keep in touch, come back when times are hard and remember what was entrusted to them.
  • A sense of the collective: Anuradha excels in teams, associations, networks; it knows how to organise and how to make people who had nothing in common work together.
  • Devotion: the same loyalty goes to a practice, a discipline, a teacher, a long-term work.
  • Lever: count yourself in the pact. By holding firm for others, Anuradha can forget itself. Writing its own needs into the agreement makes the agreement stronger.
  • Lever: name the deep waters. Scorpio brings intense emotions that often go unspoken; confiding them to a trusted person is Mitra’s very gesture.
  • Lever: accept slowness. Saturn ripens late: what seems stuck is often busy taking root.

Moon in Anuradha nakshatra

With the Moon in Anuradha (Janma nakshatra), the heart feeds on bonds. The mind is attentive, reserved at first, then wholly loyal once trust is given. You feel deeply, you keep a great deal to yourself, and a few true relationships matter more than many acquaintances.

The Moon is in Scorpio here, its sign of debilitation (neecha), a little past its lowest point (3° Scorpio, in Vishakha). The lever: this Moon finds its strength in depth and constancy rather than in lightness, and friendship and shared trust steady it. The D9 refines its shade according to the pada.

Anuradha ascendant

With the Ascendant in Anuradha, you step into the world with an outstretched hand: people see you as reliable, discreet, able to bring others together. The first impression is often serious, the second warm. Saturn, ruler of the nakshatra, becomes a planet to follow closely: its house shows where your most lasting alliances are built, and its period or sub-periods mark the times when they are formed.

Anuradha padas: the four quarters

Each 3°20′ pada corresponds to a sign of the Navamsha; for Anuradha, from Leo to Scorpio:

  • Pada 1 (3°20′–6°40′ Scorpio, Leo in the D9): the friend who leads. Loyalty comes with warmth and authority; lever: bring people together without wanting to shine alone.
  • Pada 2 (6°40′–10°00′ Scorpio, Virgo in the D9): the friend who serves. Method, care for detail, practical help; here Anuradha becomes an organiser.
  • Pada 3 (10°00′–13°20′ Scorpio, Libra in the D9): the friend who connects. Diplomacy, a sense of agreements, a talent for mediation: the spirit of Mitra in its purest form.
  • Pada 4 (13°20′–16°40′ Scorpio, Scorpio in the D9): the friend of the depths. Same sign in the D1 and the D9: any planet here is vargottama, strengthened. Mars, ruler of Scorpio, is in its own sign in both charts.

Where is Anuradha in my chart?

Anuradha belongs to the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology, which is not the zodiac of Western astrology: they are two readings of the sky (tropical or sidereal), and the nakshatra is calculated from your exact time of birth.

  1. Enter your date, time and place of birth in the nakshatra calculator.
  2. If the Moon shows Anuradha, it is your Janma nakshatra: note its pada, which points you to one of the four portraits above.
  3. Look for Anuradha in the rest of the result: an Ascendant or a planet placed there also receives the imprint of Mitra.
  4. In your Vedic birth chart, display the dashas to see when Saturn, ruler of Anuradha, takes the lead again.

A planet in Anuradha pada 4 is vargottama: same sign in the D1 and the D9. Read it first; it is often one of the clearest voices in your chart.

Calculate the nakshatra of your Moon, your Ascendant and each planet, with their pada: the site shows you whether Anuradha and Mitra count in your chart.

Frequently asked questions

What does Anuradha mean?

Anuradha means “after Radha”, Radha being the old name of Vishakha, the previous nakshatra, and meaning “success”. It is the success that comes next: the kind that is built over time, through loyalty and cooperation rather than through a single brilliant stroke.

What is the deity of Anuradha?

Mitra, one of the Adityas, the Vedic god of friendship, pacts and the given word. Often invoked with Varuna, he gives Anuradha the gift of creating bonds that last, of getting people to cooperate and of keeping commitments.

Which mahadasha for a Moon in Anuradha?

Life begins in the Saturn mahadasha, nineteen years long, already under way at birth depending on the Moon’s position in the nakshatra. Then come Mercury, seventeen years, and Ketu, seven years. The dasha calculator gives the exact dates.

Is the Moon weak in Anuradha?

The Moon is in Scorpio here, its sign of debilitation, but past its lowest point, located at 3° Scorpio. It asks for depth and constancy rather than lightness; loyal bonds steady it, and the pada, the D9 and the rest of the chart show how far this debilitation is offset.

What is the animal of Anuradha?

The doe. Jyeshtha, its neighbour, has the stag: the two nakshatras share the same animal (yoni), in female and male form. Tradition compares these animals when matching two charts, as a sign of the instinctive rapport between two people.
