Mrigashira Nakshatra: the deer’s head, the gentle and curious quest

Mrigashira is the fifth of the 27 nakshatras: it covers 23°20′ Taurus to 6°40′ Gemini in the sidereal zodiac, straddling two signs. Its name means “the head of the deer”; its ruler is Mars, its deity Soma, the lunar nectar. It is the nakshatra of the quest: curious, delicate, always on the trail of the place, the idea or the person that fulfils.

Mrigashira nakshatra meaning

Mriga means the deer, and more broadly the wild animal; shira, the head. Its symbol is therefore a deer’s head, the animal that raises its muzzle, listens and sniffs out the trail before moving on. Its stars are the small lights that form the head of Orion. It is also spelled Mrigashirsha.

Mrigashira lies between Rohini, the Moon’s fertile ground, and Ardra, Rudra’s storm. After abundance comes the search: having received, you now want to understand, explore, taste elsewhere. Its first two padas are in Taurus, the last two in Gemini.

The Indian month of Margashirsha, between November and December, bears its name, because its full moon rises near these stars. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says: “Among months, I am Margashirsha.” The nakshatra keeps something of that favour: a light, attentive grace.

Soma, the deity of Mrigashira

The deity of Mrigashira is Soma: in the Vedas, the sacred drink that gives poets their inspiration and the gods their strength, then the Moon itself, a cup of nectar the gods drink and which fills up again every month. Tradition credits this nakshatra with prinana shakti, the power to fulfil: it looks for what truly nourishes, and knows how to offer it.

Indian poets see a deer in the markings of the Moon and call it Mriganka, “marked by the deer”: the deer of Mrigashira is also Soma’s. The page of Soma tells his myths, his twenty-seven wives and his place in the chart.

Mars, ruler of Mrigashira: what it colours

Mrigashira is ruled by Mars, and the pairing is fruitful: Mars gives the hunter’s drive to the delicate animal. Soma’s gentleness does not stay dreamy; it gets up, sets off, goes to see. A planet placed here searches actively: it asks questions, tries things, comes back with something.

The ruler also sets the clock. A birth with the Moon in Mrigashira begins life in the Mars mahadasha, a seven-year period part of which has already elapsed. An example: a Moon at 2° sidereal Gemini has covered 8°40′ of the 13°20′ of the nakshatra, or 65%; 35% of the seven years remains, about two years and five months. Rahu, Jupiter and Saturn follow, in the order of the Vimshottari dashas.

Mrigashira’s qualities and challenges

Mrigashira is one of the mridu, “soft”, nakshatras: tradition chooses it to strike up a friendship, begin an art, wear something new. Its gana is deva, divine, and its animal the serpent, like its neighbour Rohini. Its gifts, then its challenges turned into levers:

  • Curiosity: a mind that wants to know how things and people work; Mrigashira learns fast and everywhere.
  • Delicacy: a gentle manner, an eye for nuance, a real talent for putting others at ease.
  • The art of searching: investigating, travelling, comparing, finding the right source; a gift for research in all its forms.
  • Restlessness: the deer cannot stay still. The lever: choose one trail and follow it to the end before opening another.
  • Wariness: the watchful animal startles at the slightest sound. The lever: check, then trust, instead of staying on the alert.
  • Dissatisfaction: the quest can become an end in itself. The lever: recognise what you have found, and drink from it.

Moon in Mrigashira: what does it mean?

With the Moon in Mrigashira, your Janma nakshatra, the mind is permanently awake: you need novelty, conversations, horizons to explore, and you feel alive when you are learning. The sensitivity is fine, almost shy; it picks up the mood of a place before anyone has spoken.

The deep need is to find what fulfils, and the difficulty is noticing it once found. The lever: give your curiosity a frame, a subject of study, a journey, a passion, and regularly note what you have discovered. The search then becomes a path, not a wandering.

And a Mrigashira Ascendant?

An Ascendant in Mrigashira gives a lively gaze, a light and often youthful bearing, a way of entering a room by observing before speaking. Mars, ruler of the nakshatra, becomes a key planet: its house shows where you set off on your quest. The other planet to watch depends on the sign: Venus if the Ascendant is still in Taurus, Mercury if it is already in Gemini.

That nuance needs the exact time: the Ascendant moves from Taurus to Gemini in the middle of the nakshatra, and a few minutes are enough to change the chart ruler.

The four padas of Mrigashira: two in Taurus, two in Gemini

Each pada spans 3°20′ and gives a sign of the Navamsha, the D9. The first two search in the concrete and the sensory, under Venus; the last two in ideas and exchanges, under Mercury:

  • Pada 1 (23°20′–26°40′ Taurus), Leo in the D9: a generous, visible quest; you search in order to create, shine, lead.
  • Pada 2 (26°40′–30°00′ Taurus), Virgo in the D9: methodical research, an eye for detail, skilful hands.
  • Pada 3 (0°00′–3°20′ Gemini), Libra in the D9: the quest for the other and for agreement; the art of conversation and connection.
  • Pada 4 (3°20′–6°40′ Gemini), Scorpio in the D9: in-depth investigation, a taste for secrets; the threshold of Ardra.

How do I find Mrigashira in my chart?

Mrigashira is read in the sidereal zodiac, the other reading of the sky, shifted by about 24° from the Western zodiac (see tropical or sidereal). The 27 nakshatras are presented on an overview page; to find where yours is:

  1. Open the nakshatra calculator with your date, exact time and place of birth.
  2. Read the nakshatra of your Moon, its pada, its ruler and its deity: if it is Mrigashira, a link leads to its page and to Soma’s.
  3. Then look at the nakshatra of your Ascendant and that of each planet, Rahu and Ketu included.
  4. To date your Mars period and the ones after it, open the dasha calculator.

A planet near 30° Taurus or 0° Gemini changes sign without changing nakshatra: it stays in Mrigashira. Read it with the ruler of its sign and with Mars.

Enter your date, exact time and place of birth: the site calculates the nakshatra and pada of your Moon, of your Ascendant and of each planet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the deity of Mrigashira?

Soma, the sacred nectar of the Vedas, identified with the Moon. He gives Mrigashira the thirst for what truly nourishes, delicacy and the power to fulfil others. The deer of the nakshatra also recalls the one Indian poets see on the Moon.

What is the ruling planet of Mrigashira nakshatra?

Mars. It gives Soma’s gentleness the hunter’s drive: you search, set off, try. A birth with the Moon in Mrigashira begins with the Mars mahadasha, a seven-year period part of which has already elapsed at birth.

Is Mrigashira in Taurus or Gemini?

Both. It runs from 23°20′ Taurus to 6°40′ sidereal Gemini: its first two padas are in Taurus, the sign of Venus, its last two in Gemini, the sign of Mercury. A planet in Mrigashira is therefore read with Mars and with the ruler of its sign.

What does a Moon in Mrigashira mean?

A curious mind, always looking for novelty, exchange and new horizons, with a fine and sometimes anxious sensitivity. The need is to find what fulfils; the lever is to give curiosity a frame and to recognise what you have already found.

What are the padas of Mrigashira?

Four quarters of 3°20′: the first (23°20′ to 26°40′ Taurus) gives Leo in the D9, the second Virgo, the third (0° to 3°20′ Gemini) Libra, the fourth Scorpio. None is vargottama: the D9 sign always differs from the D1 sign.

Is Mrigashira a favourable nakshatra?

Tradition ranks it among the soft nakshatras, of divine gana, auspicious for striking up a friendship or beginning an art. Its challenges are restlessness, wariness and dissatisfaction; they turn around when the quest finds a frame and a goal.
