Nakshatra
Shatabhisha Nakshatra: the hundred healers and the circle of Varuna
Shatabhisha is the 24th nakshatra of the Vedic zodiac: it runs from 6°40′ to 20°00′ sidereal Aquarius. Its name means “the one with a hundred healers”; it is also called Shatataraka, “the hundred stars”. Rahu rules it, Varuna, keeper of the waters and of the order of the world, presides over it, and its symbol is an empty circle: it is the nakshatra of research, of healing and of what is discovered behind the veil.
What does Shatabhisha nakshatra mean?
Shata means “a hundred” and bhishaj, “physician”, “one who heals”. Its other name, Shatataraka, “the hundred stars”, describes the sky: around the star lambda Aquarii lies a field of faint stars that only a truly dark night reveals. That is already a portrait: Shatabhisha sees what others miss, provided it takes the time to look.
It is the 24th of the 27 nakshatras, lying wholly in sidereal Aquarius, a sign of Saturn, between Dhanishtha and Purva Bhadrapada. Aquarius gives independent thinking, turned towards the collective and the future; Shatabhisha adds depth and a taste for a well-kept secret.
Shatabhisha symbol and deity: the empty circle and Varuna
The symbol of Shatabhisha is an empty circle. It draws a boundary: what is inside is protected, what is outside is kept at a distance. It also speaks of wholeness and of zero, the starting point of every search. People who carry this nakshatra know how to close themselves in to work, think or recover their strength, then open the circle again once they have found what they were looking for.
Its deity is Varuna, the great Vedic god of the celestial waters and of rita, the order that keeps the world turning. Varuna sees everything and guards oaths; a hymn of the Rig Veda credits him with “a hundred, a thousand physicians”. He gives Shatabhisha its uprightness, its demand for truth and the gift of healing by putting things back in their order.
Rahu, ruler of Shatabhisha: the thirst to understand
Shatabhisha is one of the three nakshatras of Rahu, along with Ardra and Swati. Rahu, the north node of the Moon, is a hunger: for the new, the unknown, whatever lies outside the frame. In Aquarius it finds ground to its measure, that of avant-garde ideas, technologies and networks. Rahu multiplies the leads; Saturn, ruler of the sign, supplies the method to follow one of them to the end.
A birth Moon in Shatabhisha opens life in the Rahu mahadasha, eighteen years in all. A Moon at 10° Aquarius has covered the first quarter of the nakshatra: three quarters of the period remain, about thirteen years and six months, before the sixteen years of Jupiter. A childhood under Rahu can give an early sense of being a little apart, and an urge to explore.
Shatabhisha nakshatra qualities and challenges
Tradition places Shatabhisha among the rakshasa nakshatras, of intense and independent temperament, and among the movable nakshatras (chara); its animal is the horse. Its gifts: a researcher’s mind, an accurate diagnosis, independent thinking, the ability to work alone for a long time, a taste for the sciences, technical fields, the caring professions and anything that means solving a mystery.
Its challenges are the reverse side of that independence, and each one becomes a lever once you face it squarely:
- Locking yourself inside the circle: solitude is your workshop, not your address; keep a regular appointment with other people.
- Keeping what you found to yourself: a discovery helps no one while it stays secret; share it with at least one person you trust.
- Doubting everything: scepticism is a researcher’s tool; keep it for ideas, not for the people who love you.
- Scattering yourself across Rahu’s leads: choose one question per season and dig it to the bottom.
Moon in Shatabhisha nakshatra: feeling under shelter
With the Moon in Shatabhisha, you need space in order to feel. Your emotions are lived in private first: you understand them before you show them. Calm comes from chosen solitude, from study, from water, from a starry sky. People often come to you for a clear-eyed opinion, because you can name what is wrong without dramatising it.
The lever for this Moon: let yourself be helped in turn. Shatabhisha gladly takes care of others and confides little; one or two people it can tell everything to are worth many remedies.
Shatabhisha nakshatra Ascendant
The Ascendant in Shatabhisha gives a somewhat enigmatic presence: people sense you are original, reserved, attentive to what goes on beneath the surface. You do not walk into a room to please but to understand, and people end up trusting you for that very reason.
Rahu becomes a key planet, alongside Saturn, the chart ruler for an Aquarius Ascendant. Rahu rules no sign: it acts through the ruler of the sign it occupies and the planets it joins, and its house shows where your curiosity turns. As with any Ascendant, you need an exact birth time.
The four padas of Shatabhisha
The four padas of 3°20′ correspond to Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces in the Navamsha, the D9:
- Pada 1 (6°40′–10°00′ Aquarius), Sagittarius in the D9: research in search of meaning. Philosophy, teaching, trust in the future.
- Pada 2 (10°00′–13°20′ Aquarius), Capricorn in the D9: research that builds. Method, organisation, patient ambition.
- Pada 3 (13°20′–16°40′ Aquarius), Aquarius in the D9: the heart of the nakshatra. A planet here is vargottama, in the same sign in the D1 and the D9: innovation and independence at their purest.
- Pada 4 (16°40′–20°00′ Aquarius), Pisces in the D9: research that heals. Compassion, intuition, inner life, a taste for quiet service.
How do I know if my Moon is in Shatabhisha?
The nakshatra is read in the sidereal zodiac. To find it, you need your date, time and place of birth: the Moon crosses Shatabhisha in about a day, and the time often decides the pada.
- Open the nakshatra calculator and enter your birth details.
- Read the nakshatra and pada of your Moon: the result also gives its ruler and its deity, with a link to its page and to Varuna’s.
- Spot the planet in your chart that sits in Shatabhisha, if there is one, and its pada.
- Look in the dasha calculator to see whether the Rahu period is running: that is when Shatabhisha speaks loudest.
Saturn in Shatabhisha makes tenacious researchers; Mercury there diagnoses quickly and accurately; Venus there loves discreetly and with great loyalty.
