Chinese astrology and the sky of 2026

2026, the Year of the Fire Horse

From 17 February 2026 to 5 February 2027, the Horse meets Fire: a pairing that comes back only once every sixty years. What it says, where its reputation comes from, and what the Western sky, calculated to the degree, tells us about the same fire.

One Horse, one Fire, once every sixty years

Chinese astrology counts years in cycles of sixty: twelve animals, which return every twelve years, and five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each lasting two years, one yang, one yin. 2026 pairs the Horse, seventh animal of the cycle, with yang Fire. The last time was 1966; before that, 1906; the next, 2086.

The Horse is already a fire animal by nature: the animal of summer, of the south and of noon. In 2026 it receives the year’s Fire on top. Double fire, then: drive, warmth, speed, a need for freedom, and that habit of charging ahead before the thinking is done.

When does the Year of the Fire Horse begin?

With Chinese New Year, at the new moon of 17 February 2026, and it ends on 5 February 2027, the day before the next New Year, that of the Fire Goat. Someone born on 10 February 2026 is therefore still a Wood Snake, the sign of 2025: check yours with the Chinese zodiac calculator.

Four Pillars astrologers (BaZi) count differently: for them the year changes at Lichun, the “start of spring”, when the Sun reaches 315° of longitude, on 4 February 2026 in Beijing (the evening of 3 February in Europe). Both conventions live side by side; the zodiac everyone knows follows New Year.

A ring of fire at each end of the year

The calculated sky holds a lovely coincidence: the new moon of 17 February 2026, the one that opens the Year of the Fire Horse, is an annular solar eclipse, in Aquarius. And the one of 6 February 2027, which opens the following year, is another, again in Aquarius. In an annular eclipse the Moon does not cover the whole Sun, which stays visible as a circle of light around it: what is called a “ring of fire”. The Year of the Fire Horse opens and closes on one of them (see the eclipses of 2026).

Where the Fire Horse’s reputation comes from

In Japan, the Year of the Fire Horse is called hinoeuma. An Edo-period legend held that women born in those years had a temperament too fiery for marriage. The belief was still strong enough in 1966 for births there to fall by about a quarter that year, before recovering in 1967. A mark in the statistics, not in the stars: there are no years to fear, only energies to live.

What tradition truly links to the Fire Horse: independence, courage, charisma, a spirit of adventure, and an impatience to tame. A year of this fire asks less for caution than for direction: knowing where you are going before you let go of the reins.

The same fire in the Western sky

Western astrology does not count in animals: it calculates where the planets are. And in 2026, the calculated sky also speaks of fire.

Saturn and Neptune enter Aries, the first fire sign: Neptune on 26 January 2026, Saturn on 14 February, and the two meet on 20 February 2026, at 0°45′ Aries. This conjunction returns roughly every 36 years; the previous one, in 1989, was in Capricorn. It opens a cycle in which ideals ask to be embodied and dreams put to work.

Jupiter enters Leo, another fire sign, on 30 June 2026, for a little over a year (until 26 July 2027): generosity, creativity, a wish to shine and be recognised. On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse takes place in Leo, total from northern Spain. And Uranus enters Gemini on 26 April 2026: air on the fire, new ideas, exchanges that speed up.

Two astrologies, two languages, and the same picture: a year that pushes you to move forward, to dare, to light something new.

And from November 2026?

November 2026 marks a restart. Mercury turns direct on 13 November, Venus on 14 November, after six weeks of retrograde between Scorpio and Libra: decisions about love, money and words put on hold in the autumn can move again (see Venus retrograde 2026). Mars moves into Virgo around midnight on 25–26 November and starts to slow before its retrograde of January 2027: a time to refine rather than force.

The new moon of 9 November, in Scorpio, is the right date to start what should last; the full moon of 24 November, in Gemini, to harvest, speak and share. Then December sets the slow planets moving again: Saturn turns direct on the night of 10 to 11 December, Neptune on the 12th, while Jupiter begins its retrograde in Leo on the 13th.

These dates hold for everyone. What changes from one person to the next is where they land: in which house of your chart, on which birth planet. That is what your transits, calculated on your chart, show.

Born in 1966: the Fire Horse turns sixty

People born between 21 January 1966 and 8 February 1967 are Fire Horses: 2026 is their first full return of the cycle, their sixtieth birthday in Chinese astrology, which Japanese tradition celebrates as a rebirth, the kanreki. Those born in January 1966 before the 21st are still Wood Snakes.

A child born in 2026

A baby born between 17 February 2026 and 5 February 2027 will be a Fire Horse, like every child born that year. Their birth chart, though, belongs to them alone: the time and place of birth set their Ascendant, their Moon and their twelve houses. The baby reading turns it into a portrait to keep, to understand their temperament and support them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Chinese zodiac sign of 2026?

The (yang) Fire Horse, from 17 February 2026 to 5 February 2027. Before 17 February 2026, it is still the Wood Snake of 2025; from 6 February 2027, the Fire Goat.

When was the last Year of the Fire Horse?

From 21 January 1966 to 8 February 1967, and before that in 1906. The sixty-year cycle brings it back in 2086.

Why does the Fire Horse have this reputation?

Because of a Japanese belief, hinoeuma, which held that women born in those years were too fiery. In 1966, births in Japan fell by about a quarter. Astrology does not see a bad year in it: a fire to steer.

Born in January 2026: Horse or Snake?

Snake: before 17 February 2026, the Chinese year is still that of the Wood Snake, as for every birth since 29 January 2025.

What is the difference between a Chinese sign and a star sign?

The Chinese sign depends on the year of birth, and everyone born that year shares it. The star sign depends on the day, and the birth chart on the minute and place: Sun, Moon, Ascendant and houses, unique to each person.
