Pluto square Jupiter transit: meaning, duration and advice

A square places Pluto ninety degrees from your natal Jupiter, in a sign of the same modality, cardinal, fixed or mutable: two stubborn energies, each wanting something different. Jupiter wants to expand, to believe, to say yes, to claim the place it feels it deserves; Pluto wants to go to the bottom of things, to concentrate, to transform, and lets through no growth that isn’t true down to the root. What gets activated is the relationship between your appetite and your integrity: how far are you entitled to want more, and what does your confidence really rest on? The friction is uncomfortable; it is also the most productive of the five aspects as soon as you stop merely enduring it.

In everyday life, momentum and braking take turns at a bewildering pace. One day you feel capable of anything, ready to defend your ideas against all comers; the next, a deep doubt grips you about the very meaning of what you are building. You may be told you are excessive, asked to prove what you claim, or run into a powerful person or institution that refuses to step out of your way. The questions that keep circling are sharp: do I want to grow, or do I want to be right? What am I inflating so I won’t look at what resists me? Where has my confidence turned into a pose?

This transit asks for two virtues Jupiter doesn’t naturally love: restraint and integrity. Restraint, so that your ambition stays in proportion to your real means and doesn’t bet everything on a single throw; integrity, so that your convictions can withstand scrutiny without your having to raise your voice. The risk of Pluto square Jupiter is swinging between arrogance and collapse: crushing the debate by force, then doubting everything the moment force isn’t enough, or passing off fanaticism about ideas as faith. The gift matches the effort: a tested confidence that holds, a view of the world stripped of its exaggerations, and growth that is slower but real, the kind you don’t come back down from.

Pluto’s square to your natal Jupiter lasts two to three years within a one-degree orb, sometimes longer depending on the sign Pluto is crossing, and it works in waves. Pluto advances a few degrees, turns retrograde for about five months, then moves on again: the pressure builds, eases, returns, three times most often, five when its loop falls on your degree two years running. The first wave shows what resists; the second lets you correct your aim; the last measures what you have really changed. Because Pluto takes two hundred forty-eight years to go around the zodiac, this square comes once at most in a lifetime, at a time that depends entirely on where your Jupiter sits.

To check, calculate your free birth chart on the site and note the degree of your Jupiter, then look for Pluto on the sky-of-the-day page: if it sits three signs from your Jupiter, in either direction, within a degree or two of the same number, the bow is drawn. The two planets then share the same modality, cardinal, fixed or mutable.
