Uranus square Jupiter transit: meaning, duration and advice

The square places Uranus ninety degrees from your natal Jupiter, in a sign of the same modality as its own, cardinal, fixed or mutable: two stubborn forces that are not looking in the same direction. Jupiter wants to enlarge what exists, believe harder, go further down the road already open; Uranus wants something else entirely, somewhere else, right now. What gets activated is the tension between quantity and direction: your beliefs receive new contradictions, your projects unexpected competitors, your confidence a surplus of energy that doesn’t yet know where to go. Both planets love wide-open space; thrown across each other’s path, they set off a headlong rush that will have to be channeled without being snuffed out.

In everyday life, it feels like an impatient effervescence. You pitch three projects in the same meeting, you want to sign up for two training programs, plan a move and switch fields before summer; what you defended on Monday looks narrow by Thursday, because a newer idea came along in the meantime. You promise quickly, to yourself and to others, and people who think “small” irritate you more than they should. The mood is stimulating and exhausting at once, like an unfamiliar city you would like to see in a single day. The questions that keep coming back are about sorting: am I growing or am I scattering myself? What do I choose, if I can’t have everything? Why does what was enough for me yesterday suddenly seem too small?

This transit asks you to channel the excess without disowning it: keep the appetite, choose the dish. Concretely, that means testing a new idea on a small scale before entrusting it with your future, committing to one new direction instead of five, and keeping the promises you have already made while you add just one. The risk of Uranus square Jupiter is betting everything on the newest idea, dropping a solid commitment for a dazzling mirage, promising too much and then letting people down; or, the other way around, refusing every novelty out of fear of excess and watching change impose itself from outside. The gift is growth that is finally your own: convictions put to the test and made more supple, a new direction that exists because you chose it, and an optimism that has learned to aim.

A square from Uranus to Jupiter lasts one to two years within a one-degree orb, in three passes most often, just one when the retrograde stops just short of your degree. The first pass sets your ideas on fire: everything arrives at once. During the roughly five months each year when Uranus moves backward, the pressure drops, and this is the time to choose, with a cool head, what you will keep rather than restart the machine. The last pass, moving direct, confirms the direction you settled on and lets the others dissolve. An eighty-four-year cycle contains two squares from Uranus to your Jupiter, about forty years apart: the first arrives while the cycle is climbing and pushes you to expand, the second while it is coming back down and pushes you to prune. Many people go through one, some two, and the age depends entirely on where Uranus stood in relation to Jupiter on the day you were born.

To check, look up your natal Jupiter in your free birth chart, calculated on the site, then Uranus on the sky-of-the-day page. The square is active if Uranus is in the third sign before or after Jupiter’s, within a degree or two of the same number: a Jupiter in Taurus, for example, receives the square of a Uranus in Leo or Aquarius. If so, the effervescence you feel has an end date, and a meaning.
