Free astrology calculators: which one to use, and what each one gives you

Every free astrology calculator on the site starts from your birth: the full birth chart, the rising sign, the Moon sign, the North Node, the Chinese zodiac sign, the solar return, your transits and the compatibility of two charts. Some need only the date, others the date, time and place. Here is what each one answers, and which one to open for your question.

Which free astrology calculator should you use?

Every calculation on the site is free and needs no sign-up. The right choice mostly depends on what you know about your birth, and on the question you are asking: a precise trait, your year, your relationship or the period you are going through.

The calculations made to the minute all rely on the same engine: astronomical ephemerides, historical time zones and a database of 99,000 places (calculation accuracy). Your Ascendant is therefore the same whether you go through the birth chart calculator or the rising sign calculator.

  • With the date only: the Chinese zodiac sign, the decan and the “Born on…” pages.
  • With the date, time and place: the birth chart, the rising sign, the Moon sign, the North Node, the solar return and your transits.
  • With two births: the compatibility of two charts.

The full birth chart, the calculation that contains all the others

The birth chart calculator is the most complete. Your date, time and place of birth give the interactive wheel, the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant with their degree, every planet in its sign and house, the aspects and the interpretation of each placement. On top of that come an express reading composed from your exact chart and the questions you can ask your chart.

The step-by-step guide to the form, from an unknown birth time to coordinates typed by hand, is in calculating your birth chart. It is the page to read if a field stops you.

Not sure? Start with the full chart: the rising sign, the Moon, the North Node and your current transits are already in it.

Calculating your rising sign, Moon sign or North Node

Three pages focus on a single placement and explain it in depth. They use the same form as the birth chart and open the same result page: you get the placement you were looking for and, along with it, your whole birth chart.

  • Rising sign calculator: the sign rising in the east at the minute you were born. It changes roughly every two hours, so the exact time is essential. The page also covers the twelve rising signs and the 144 Sun-rising combinations.
  • Moon sign calculator: the Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days, so the date alone is not always enough. Without a time, the calculation is made for noon: check the degree if your Moon sits at the edge of a sign.
  • North Node calculator: the true Node, calculated to the minute, with the South Node opposite. The time gives its house, the area of life where this direction plays out. The page details the North Node in the twelve signs and the twelve houses.

The calculations that need only your date of birth

When the time is missing, three tools still answer, because they depend only on the day. They give neither the Ascendant nor the houses, but what they give is exact.

  • The Chinese zodiac sign: enter your date and tap “Find my sign”. The calculation takes Chinese New Year into account, which falls between 21 January and 20 February, and covers births from 30 January 1930 to 16 February 2045.
  • The decan: “Calculate my decan” uses the real position of the Sun on your date, not a rough table. Each sign has three decans of ten degrees, each one coloured by a planet.
  • Born on…: one page for each of the 366 days of the year, with the Sun sign, the days when it hesitates between two signs, the decan, the degree of the Sun and the solar return.

Born in January or early February? Your Chinese animal may be the one of the previous year: the calculator checks it for you.

Solar return and transits: the calculations for the period ahead

The solar return draws the chart of the moment the Sun comes back to the exact degree of your birth, around your birthday. With your date, time and place, you get the date and time of the return, the year’s rising sign and Moon, the full wheel and a reading of the year; “Previous year” and “Next year” switch years. The how-to is on the solar return page.

My transits reads the week’s sky on your chart: three landmarks (“Today”, “The strongest passage”, “Today’s Moon”), the reading of your week, then your transits of the moment and of the next twelve months, dated. With no chart in the address, the page asks for your birth details once (the My transits guide).

Calculating the compatibility of two charts

The compatibility calculator compares two births, “You” and “The other person”. If a time is missing, tick “Unknown”: the study adapts. You get scores out of 5 for love, communication, longevity and passion, “Your strengths” and “Your levers”, your two wheels, every aspect between your charts and a reading of your dynamic as a couple.

Only know your Sun signs? Zodiac sign compatibility gives a first idea, before real synastry. The love compatibility guide explains how to read the scores and the cross aspects.

Around the calculators: today’s sky and the lunations

The sky today needs nothing from you: the position of every planet, the Moon phase, the retrogrades and the current aspects, updated continuously. Each date also has its own page, handy for seeing the sky of a past day, such as the day you were born. The lunar calendar lists every full moon and new moon, with its time, sign and degree. To learn how to read that sky, see the sky today guide.

When a calculation is no longer enough, the year-ahead reading and the written reading take over: PDFs at €9.99, composed from your exact chart. Every plan, including My Birth Chart+ at €9.99 a month, is gathered on the pricing page.

Not sure where to start? The full chart contains the rising sign, the Moon, the North Node and the rest of your sky map, calculated to the minute.

Frequently asked questions

Are the astrology calculators on the site really free?

Yes. The birth chart, the rising sign, the Moon sign, the North Node, the Chinese sign, the decan, the solar return, your transits and compatibility are all calculated for free, with no account or e-mail address. Only the written PDF readings and the subscription are paid.

Why do I need my birth time to calculate my rising sign?

Because the rising sign is the sign that was on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born, and it changes roughly every two hours. Without a time, the calculator cannot give it: the chart is shown without the Ascendant or the houses.

What is the difference between a rising sign calculator and a birth chart calculator?

None in the calculation itself: both pages use the same form and open the same result page, with your whole chart. The rising sign page simply explains that placement in more depth, with the twelve rising signs and the Sun-rising combinations.

Can I calculate compatibility without a birth time?

Yes. Tick “Unknown” for the person whose time is missing: the planets and most aspects between your charts remain correct. Only the points that depend on the time, such as the Ascendant and the houses, cannot be read for that person.

How do I find my Chinese zodiac sign if I was born in January or February?

It depends on the date of Chinese New Year in your year of birth, between 21 January and 20 February. Before that date, you belong to the animal of the previous year. The Chinese sign calculator takes this into account: just enter your full date.
